Returned it because it didn't play sound.

    • Written by from Rexburg

After downloading this product I played a MPEG-2 video but the sound did not work. I went to an apple store to figure out what the problem was. I told a genius and he said, "Oh yeah, that strips all the sound." That would have been nice to know. So don't expect to get sound out of this. It is only a viewer.

No Good for .MOD / mpeg 2 files!

    • Written by from Ashtead

I bought this so I could 'see' the .MOD files that the Panasonic SDR-H20 camera uses... .MOD is an mpeg 2 variant. However, once this plug was installed... QuickTime opened the file... GREAT PICTURE, NO SOUND! So... if you have .MOD files, drop them into TOAST TITANIUM and choose 'Disc/Export Video'... shame I didn't work that out before wasting my hard earned cash! I love Apple... but why am I increasingly having to use third party alternatives... what's going on Steve?

    Not worth $20

    • Written by from Madison

There's a 4 GB limit on the size of MPEG2 Files. This isn't disclosed. You only find out about it after you've paid and tried a file 4 GB or larger. Tech article 304656 from Nov 2006 mentions it. But no solutions.

    Works well with MPEG Streamclip

    • Written by from Bronx

I expected use of QT MPEG-2 to be a bit simpler.
For novices like me who have a Sony HDD recorder and still running OS 10.3:
Install both MPEG Streamclip (free) and QT MPEG-2 (be sure you've already installed QT Player 6 or 7, also free). Play imported MPG's through Streamclip. Although you play through Streamclip (necessary for audio, AC3), MPEG-2 Playback is necessary for the video. From here, you can convert files to several other formats.

Plays Hauppauge WinTV 150 .mpg files

    • Written by from Houston

Plays my .mpg files, resizes, even plays in full screen and at different speeds. Just doesn't adjust pitch during accelerated playback. Does live scrolling for easy seek. Doesn't zoom during the change of window size, but plays my muxed MPEG-2 .mpg files from my Hauppauge WinTV 150 .mpg files.

Didn't get the fifth star because it does support all the neat stuff in Quicktime like zoom and pitch adjustment.

Works with QT, but not with iMovie...

    • Written by from Basel

Even though this software works as described for QT I'm very disappointed: I only bought it because I wanted to process my old mpeg-2 files with iMovie. There was (maybe still is, but I can't find it anymore) a support message indicating that iMovie can process mpeg-2 when Quicktime is enabled with this option. Unfortunately this is not true. Even though QT now recognizes and plays these files correctly, iMovie remains to be useless. Even if I misunderstood the support message: Shame on Apple to leave their customers (who want to process their old movies and payed lots of money for hardware and software) standing in the rain like this! It doesn't fit to the marketing messages about "user friendly" and "multi media capable" at all, and the licensing fee Apple would have to pay to enable it's software for mpeg-2 is nothing compared to what customers pay just to find out or work around it!

    Confused

    • Written by from Denver

I would have to agree with most of the other reviews here. This software allowed me to view, but not hear. I was able to finally get everything I wanted from MPEG Streamclip FOR FREE, which is sad since I am such a die hard Mac fan, but this time, I am really disappointed.

    Very Upset

    • Written by from Indianapolis

Got a file MPEG and thought that MPEG 2 would open and play it no problem on my iMac OS 10.3.9. Guess again. 20 dollars down the drain? These compatablility problems really make the computer industy and Apple as dicy as a crooked auto dealer service center. Have always loved my Apples, come on guys you can do better than this in being more comprehensive and strait forward about what soft ware works with which OSs. Don't buy this product as a strait forward application to work with MPEG files.

Compatibility issues of cameras/digital still/mpeg movieVX

    • Written by from Kelowna

It has taken me weeks to find the right information to know that I even needed to buy MPEG 2. The technical support of the store where I bought both my iMac and Sony Cybershot DSC-H7 had no answers for me on why I couldn't make my MPEGMovie compatible with iMovie. Finally after a lot searching I found MPEG Streamclip (freeware) that will do the conversions as long as I have the MPEG-2 Playback. I call this poor planning on the part of both Sony and iMac. Sony and other PC compatible cameras seem to think they can push an iMac or Apple user over to a PC. What they don't accept is that Apple computers are the best in the world. It disappoints me that Apple doesn't work with the camera industry,no matter who, to create an interface software specifically for iMacs/Apples that would guarantee a seamless operation with all cameras. Maybe in the future. I love my iMac and I love my Sony. I just don't like having my time wasted.

    MPEG-2 Playback

    • Written by from Shawnee

Not Happy - after install, I can only see not hear the video. Not able to find support to assist. They have my money and I don't have a product that really works. Very bummed.

Did not playback my Mpeg 2's!!

    • Written by from edmonton

I have .MOD files from a JVC camera. MOD files are Mpeg 2 with a different extention name. I tried opening them and got an error saying i needed to buy this add-on. I have Quicktime Pro and now the Mpeg 2 plugin and it STILL WONT PLAY! I had to go search the web and found a basic freeware player that will play them back and convert to DV no problem.

    What a money grab.

ironically, works well, but not in Quicktime

    • Written by from North York

I purchased this product to allow me to convert my own homemade DVDs (made from dubbing analog tapes to my DVD/HDD recorder) to other formats (DV, MOV, MPEG-4) for importing and editing into iMovie. For this purpose, the codec enhances the functionality of the freeware MPEG Streamclip. However, within Quicktime itself, audio support is less than desirable, and it took a close reading of some of the fineprint of the product's description for me to realize why I wasn't getting sound even though the video of VOB files play fine. If you want to get this item just to play DVDs in Quicktime, don't bother. The DVD Player that ships with OS X does it a lot better, and I think there are other freeware players too that work fine. But this seems to be an essential investment for anyone wanting to do conversions in something like MPEG Streamclip, and for that reason I think it was worth the money.

    It works

    • Written by from Aldan

I purchased a Sony HD camcorder for my husband last year, but it was impossible for him to import videos into iMovie or anything else on his PowerBook. Now that he has this, he's able to convert the MPEG-2 format videos from the camcorder into iMovie 6 .mov files and share them with far-flung family.

Works well. Does what it says. In my opinion this should have been included in an upgrade. After a drive failure I have to buy this again? What a disappointment.

.mpg to mp4 conversion with audio

    • Written by from Hull

When used for the above, this Quicktime Add-On was needed for running alongside MPEG Streamclip.

These two applications combined allowed me to convert .mpeg footage files from a non-mac-compatible camcorder (Sony HD 2007) to mp4 files that could be played back and edited in iMovie HD. Although i must add that i have Quicktime Pro (which allowed me to send the files to MPEG Streamclip).

Also, the audio didn't play back in Quicktime, which is why i needed MPEG Streamclip, which solved that issue.

This software was easy and fast to download.

    Wonderful product.

    • Written by from Evansville

I have a Panasonic Camcorder that is hard drive based and I had family come out to see me last month and I told my brother what I was wanting to do with this camera so he bought this for me and I ran some footage that was taken with the camera and converted it to import into iMovie and it worked as advertised. Nice job Apple.

Nice Product, but Difficult to Purchase

    • Written by from Hot Springs

The MPEG 2 component is a nice component to own, but the fact that you can only purchase it online makes it a downfall. I like doing my orders over the phone, so having to purchase an Apple giftcard just to order it online was a hassle. Nice tool, but wish you'd include it with QuickTime Pro 8 or QuickTime Plus 8.

    Beggars belief

    • Written by from Ely

It beggars belief that, after spending the best part of £1000 ($2000) on a Mac that Apple want another $20 off me so I can do all the wonderful whizzy things that the adverts told me Macs are so great at and PCs are rubbish. Well, Apple, Windows Media Player manages my MPEG-2 files fine out of the box, so why can't Apple? Oh, and, really, I want to playback and edit AVCHD, that is, a format that has been around less than 10 years, but no chance...
