can the time capsule serve as a vpn router
- Asked by Vu P from Azusa

AnswerVPN = Virtual Private Network - a connection from your computer or service to another service or computer in a secure way - perfectly possible with a mac or with a good network router, however the time capsule is not a server or router, its a remote storage device - so if you want a secure connection from outside your home network you will need a mac, server, pc or router to achieve this.

Best AnswerNo, a Time Capsule has never had the ability to replace a modem. A DSL or cable modem should be connected to Time Capsule's single Ethernet WAN port if you wish to connect to the internet.

can you store all your photos on Time Machine and take them off your hard drive so you have more room?
- Asked by Susan K from Bellingham

Best AnswerYes you can! My Hard Drive was getting full from all my digital media i.e. Pics, Music & Movies so I transferred them from my iMac to my TC & erased them from my iMac. If I ever want to view any of my pictures, listen to any of my stored music or watch any movies I just go to my finder & click on my TC & click on the appropriate files to access whatever media I want to? It's that easy! You just drag & pull your files from your hard drive to your TC, you can set up different folders & name them like pics, music, movies, etc. & store them however you want & access whenever you want!

How do you use the time capsule as an external wireless drive?
I am trying to store some files on my external hard drive and I am wondering how to do this. Do I drag the files into Time Machine backups when that shows up or do I put them in the shared drive?
- Asked by Mitch L from Chehalis

Best AnswerYou put them in a shared drive, or folder.
You can create a folder on your time machine the same way you would create one on your desktop or elsewhere. You find the time machine in 'finder', click on it, click 'Command-Shift-N' to create a new folder. Name the folder the same way you would any other. Now you can drag whatever files you want into that folder and access them wirelessly.- Answered by Alexis G from Madison

Does time capsule backup multiple users on a same computer as a single profile?
- Asked by Phuong T from Irvine
- 11/05/2011
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerIf you choose to allow it to do so when you authorize Time Machine backups, Time Machine will back up everything on a Mac's internal hard drives as well as on USB external drives connected to the same Mac. Yes, this certainly includes all users. Of course you can choose to backup less than everything.

Can I use Time Capsule as 1) NAS and / or 2) iTunes server?
So I have a few devices which access the network at home:
- MacBook Pro
- MacBook Air
- iPad 2
- iPhone 4
- Apple TV
- Samsung internet-connected TV
- Playstation 3
- Xbox 360
I'm trying to decide on a single device which can act as an NAS, a single depository for files, and as an iTunes server to use primarily with Apple TV but certainly not limited to this.
Can the Time Capsule function as both, in addition to being the Time Machine back up machine? Neither? Maybe one? No one seems to have a clear answer on this.
Frankly, if it does only Time Machine back ups, I'll be looking elsewhere.- Asked by Don C from Los Angeles

Best AnswerYou can configure a TC to join an existing network as a client. However, it doesn't work (or least not for all intents and purposes). I bought it for the same purpose, but got shocking performance (< 1MB/sec). I called Apple support and was told that "a TC is not meant to be used in client mode". (If you configure the TC as the base station that provides the network, you get normal performance (better than 15MB/sec).) The recent firmware update (7.6) did not fix the problem, so you effectively cannot use a TC as NAS.
You don't need to use all of a TC's disk for Time Machine. You can concurrently use it to store other files. (Obviously, the files on the TC won't really be backed up, seeing that they are on the same disk. If the disk dies, you lose those files, even if you back them up on the TC.)
You can't use a TC as an "iTunes server". But you can tell iTunes to use a TC to store it's files on. Again, if the TC joins an existing wireless network, it will work only very poorly though.- Answered by Michael H from Holland Park

does time capsule support WiFi protected setup (WPS)?
Just got a HP Photosmart Plus e-All-in-one 8210 series printer when I bought my new mac book pro. I was wondering if Time Capsule supports WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) for easy one-buttin wireless setup?
- Asked by Ajit G from Lubbock
- 28/01/2011

Best AnswerNo, to my knowledge the Time Capsule does NOT support WPS. That it GOOD news, since WPS has been broken! WPS is no longer considered safe. It should be disabled on ANY router, no matter what brand or model.
While WPS is off, do a 'manual' configuration. To make your printer join your WLAN, go to its setup panel and enter the name (ESSID) and password and -if necessary- tell it to use DHCP. Then it will happily join the network automatically and you're done.- Answered by Michael M

time capsule without ethernet cable
Does the Time Capsule require a cable from the ethernet modem? I have a wireless network and I would like to hide the Time Capsule away from the wireless modem (so it does not get stolen when someone nicks my computer). So, does time capsule wirelessly integrate into my existing wireless network?

Best Answer"So, does time capsule wirelessly integrate into my existing wireless network?"
Yes, when using AirPort Utility to setup Time Capsule choose to have it "Extend a wireless network" or "Join a wireless network" depending upon which you'd like Time Capsule to do. Then you'll be able to select your wireless network from a list of those active in the area.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

Will the Time Capsule print from the IPAD ?
- Asked by Donald K from Williamsville
- 2/12/2010

Best AnswerNot on its own, you can plug a printer into the Time Capsule and make it available over your wireless network but the iPad won't be able to print to it. If you have another Mac on the network that can print to the printer attached to the Time Capsule then you can install Printopia on that Mac and it will publish the printer so that your iPad can print to it.

Can i set up Time Capsule as wireless hard drive only, and how ?
- Asked by Richard R from Poulton Le Fylde

Best AnswerYes, Time Capsule can share its internal drive to Mac and Windows computers (in technical terms: it supports AFP and SMB/CIFS protocols) even when using it as backup device for your Mac(s) at the same time.
Note however that a Time Capsule's primary function is backup device for your Mac(s), backing up data from Time Capsule can be done but is not as effortless as backing up a Mac to a Time Capsule.
If all you need is a NAS (network attached storage) there are better 3rd party devices available.- Answered by J A K M

Best Answer
Yes.
In Time Machine preferences, you are shown a list of all hard drives, internal and external, connected to your computer. You can select which ones you want to back up using Time Machine, in this case, to your Time Capsule.
I have an external hard drive for extra memory, and I am able to back it up to my Time Capsule.- Answered by Colin K from Deerfield

Any Cat 5 or Cat 6 ethernet cable will work. This will give you Gigabit speeds, which allows the backup to run about 200x faster. This is a great idea for your first TC backup - the incremental backups are much smaller and WiFi should be fine.

Yes. Powerline networking can have some problems though if there are "noisy" devices on the circuit such as appliances with motors or fluorescent lights. Also, both adapters should be on the same circuit if possible.

If I have a TC and an AppleTV can I free my laptop hard drive from movies?
The media I want ready access to I'll put on the AppleTV. Can I then move all movies/TV off my MacBook onto the TC and just move them to the MacBook when I want to update the AppleTV?
(I'm concerned that when the AppleTV doesn't see any of its movies in iTunes it will auto-delete them off the AppleTV.)- Asked by Paul R

Best AnswerWith a few extra steps, yes, and with only one file move required. I'm assuming you're using a first gen. ATV, because you're worried about files being deleted from it, and that's inconsistent with the later models' streaming-only setup. This process will cause a one-time full re-sync, as you'll be deleting and re-adding your files. You'll also need to re-select which media you want on your ATV.
The key is to use the network storage function of the TC for your iTunes movies. You don't have to move your entire library, just (1) drag the movies out of iTunes to the new location (2) make sure everything copied (2) delete them from iTunes (3) in iTunes Preferences, Advanced tab, uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library" (you can change it back later) (4) click File. Add to Library, and navigate to the movies' new location to select them all. As long as your iTunes knows where the movies are, your Apple TV can find them. You can recheck the "Copy files to itunes media folder..." option at this point. Now, you can stream your movies to any connected ATV, or define media to sync with a gen. 1 device with internal storage. Obviously, going from empty to full will take your ATV fair bit of time, I'd run the sync while you sleep.- Answered by Julia T from Walton
