The last version of the Mac OS to support the PowerPC processor is OS 10.5 (Leopard). Beginning with OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) you had to have a Mac with an Intel processor.

In my opinion, OS 10.4.11 is a very stable release.

If you do decide to upgrade to OS 10.5, it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to find it for sale.

Everything Your computer will stay there, it is a good idea to upgrade to snow leopard. If you go to the snow leopard page, you should see all the wonderful features.

Personally, don't bother with 10.8- Snow Leopard has been tagged as a very and reliable stable operating system for many into photography, music and high processor-demanding applications.

Your system is plenty for Snow Leopard but might take a hit on Mountain Lion. I/m running an early 2010 MBP and experienced issues immediately with ML, but none with SL

Yes, you can run Snow Leopard (10.6), and even Lion (10.7) if you can obtain a copy. However, you can't run Mountain Lion (10.8).

You can download Mac OS X 10.6.8 combo update from apples website or use the software update by clicking the apple logo and clicking software update this will give you Mac App Store where you can purchase mountain lion.

In short - no. You need Snow Leopard to access the Mac App store to purchase Lion.

Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) requires an Intel processor and at least 1GB of memory. (Note: the installer will not work on PowerPC Macs, or on most recent Macs introduced after Lion (OS 10.7) was released.).

The MacBookPro has an Intel processor so if you have at least 1GB of memory (2GB or more is better) you are good to go.

Purchase the Snow Leopard Disk. Then proceed with installation.

You could upgrade directly over OS 10.4, but I would recommend doing the following.

1) Using Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard disk, create a new partition formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journalled). (Alternatively, use an external drive and use Disk Utility to RESTORE your OS 10.4 partition to the external drive. This is a clone. Make sure you can start up from the external drive after the restore. Then format your internal partition to Mac OS Extended (Journalled).) [Note: to get to Disk Utility on the Snow Leopard disk, open the installer (if not already open), click on Utilities and Restart. Disk Utilities is under the Utilities menu after restart.]

2) Install Snow Leopard on the blank formatted partition. During install, the installer will search your Mac for any partitions with an OS on it, and then ask if you want to import OS settings, apps and/or files. Do the import to move your OS settings, apps and files to the Snow Leopard partition. If you decide to not import, you will have a "clean install" of Snow Leopard instead.

3) After installation and startup in Snow Leopard, go to Apple menu and do Software Update. This will bring you up to OS 10.6.8.

You will now have a dual boot Mac and can start up from either OS 10.4 or OS 10.6. When I upgraded from OS 10.4.11 to OS 10.6, some of my printer and scanner drivers did not work in OS 10.6 until I could find suitable drivers. In the meantime, I could still start up from OS 10.4 to print or scan.

I realize you asked this question awhile ago. But as I just got this disc in the mail today and installed it on 2 computers, I can tell you now. The disc itself is 10.6.3, to get to 10.6.8 you need to click on "Software Update" after you install the disc.
