From a first generation iPad, your options are limited. However, if using iPad 2, you will be able to mirror the whole iPad 2 screen (including apps) using VGA. Mirroring without HDMI willonly work on iPad 2.

Get an audio cable with two male sides (looks like a headphone plug). Put one side in the iPad and the other in your tv (or whatever you are trying to play the sound through). The sound should transfer that way.

Are there wireless connections for mac to lcd projection?
I am a high school teacher and apple enthusiast, I am in love with Ipad ( Thanks for that ). My problem is projection using my LCD projector with these marvelous products . I want to do it wirelessly. There are 2 questions I would like to ask ;
1. Is there an app that works wirelessly with the Ipad macbook, pro and the projector syncing them together under the control of the Ipad?,If possible, this marvelous invention would allow me to peruse while supervising my energetic students and still dynamically teach. The apple remote is an option I use , but is so limited.
2.Are there further upgrades for the first IPad? ( I feel cheated LOL) If not what about trade in's?- Asked by Vogel W from Hialeah

There is no automatic output with this adapter. It's the responsibility of the individual iPad app that you use to output it's display to the this tv adapter. You will need to ask those application develops if they support, or intend to support this VGA adapter.

Yes, I just tested it on my HDTV w/VGA input. No sound though because all you're doing is mirroring the image. Also, black bars are added to the left/right because the tv can't convert to the appropriate resolution. What your see on the iPad is what you get on the screen via VGA. Yes, you can play HULU, Netflix...anything that runs on your iPad 2, will show up on screen.

Does using the VGA cable reduce the battery life on the iPad?
Unlike the HDMI cable, this cable does not offer the possibility to charge the iPad while connected to a VGA display. Does driving the VGA display use power from the iPad? If so, by how much is the battery life reduced? In other words, what's the time limit on a presentation, for example?

The VGA dongle is female. When you connect the adapter to the IPad you now have the same set up as a laptop computer. Whether you are connecting a laptop, desktop, or VGA adapted IPad, you need a standard VGA cable that is male on each end to connect your computer (IPad) to your output screen, which is a TV in your case.
