The previous answer runs counter to all the info here, and doesn't make much sense electrically. The Macbook Pro which normally expects an 85W supply will try to draw more current from the 60W supply than it can normally give, and the supply will overheat and fail early. The 60W can probably supply 70W or 75W if it has to, but will certainly overheat over time. You would be alright to run it like that for a short while, maybe 10 minutes. Or recharge the battery only with the Mac shut down.

Can I use the 45w magsafe power adapter for my 15" macbook AIR?
Yeesh. Why is this so hard to figure out? I needed a replacement for my 15" air, and this 45w that came looks awfully small. Will it harm my macbook air to use a 45w? Will it charge? Thanks for your help!

Answer
The article at
support dot apple dot com/kb/ht2346
(substitute punctuation for the word dot and remove spaces)
says
--beginquote--
Power adapters for Intel-based Apple notebooks are available in 45W, 60W, and 85W varieties. Although you should always use the proper wattage adapter for your Apple notebook, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage without issue.
For instance If you have a MacBook (13-inch Late 2009) that normally uses a 60W adapter, you can also use an 85W adapter with that computer. You would not use a 45W adapter with that computer; it would not provide enough power for that MacBook.

The new ones will work just fine as long as your macbook has a rectangular magnetic head (as opposed the round ones that the ibook and powerbook used).
The new power adapters have a smaller metal head (as opposed to plastic) and are designed so that the cable extends backward from the laptop as opposed to off to the side but those are just design improvements. They fit the same port and plug into the computer exactly the same as the plastic rectangular ones.- Answered by Kieran K from Burnsville

The power (Wattage) requirement of the Macbook Pro is higher (the adapter is rated 85W, while the one for the 13"is rated 60W), so you must use the 85W adapter. These regulated power supplies are able to maintain the voltage (V) constant, while the current (I) is adjusted according to the needs of the equipment being powered. Since P=V x I, if V is kept regulated at 10 Volts, the maximum current supported by the 60W adaptor will be 6 Amps, while the 85W adapter will supply up to 8.5 Amps. So, using the 85W with the 13" does not constitute a problem (on the contrary, the power adapter will run cooler), but if you use the 60W with the Macbook Pro, the current drained from the adaptor will exceed its specs, the adapter will overheat and its life spam will be shortened considerably.

I need a new charger for my 15' macbook pro.
It is a little over a year old. I also purchased, what turned out to be a knock off a few months ago from amazon for 15 dollars. Mistake, the think lasted for about one week. I use my macbook fairly often, and would like the charger to last more than 15 months if possible. Still I am hesitant to purchase an 80 dollar charger. Is this my best option? Out of the 100 or so reviews I have read, I have only found about 4 or 5 positive reviews. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
I have had this adapter for quite some time and have not had any issues with it, honestly my opinion is that if you are careful with the adapter, like keep the wire relatively straight (no bending it in half), there should be no problem with this lasting a year and a half or more. I have had my magsafe 2 adapter for more then 2 years and have had no problems with it myself.

No. I just took mine to England where they also have 220s. There is a converter built in to the adapter already. You just need the right plug to snap on to the front.

No. If you run some demanding software, it might not charge the laptop while you're using it heavily, but otherwise, it works fine with 60W adapters.

45W - MacBook Airs 11 & 13
60W - 13" MacBook Pro (can also use for airs)
85W - 15" (&17") MacBook Pro (can also use for 13" & Airs)
NB. you can use a higher W than was supplied but do not use a lower W. The 2012 MacBook Airs & Retina MBP's use Mac safe 2
So for the MBP 13" summer 2011 that you purchased this would require the 60W.- Answered by Richard N
