No. Apple TV is NOT an add-on for your iMac. Apple TV is a set-top box, which is designed to connect to your TV, not your iMac.
If you want to watch TV on your iMac, try finding those "internet-TV" applications for your mac.- Answered by Seth C from Bangkok

Depends on what you mean by that. You cannot receive live cable television, but you can stream everything you can access online to the AppleTV (which should be connected to your TV) and enjoy it on the big screen.
As an example, you can go to live.cnn.com on your iMac and play the live stream that you see in the browser on your TV through AirPlay, but you cannot receive the CNN cable channel through the AppleTV.- Answered by Tobias V from Atlanta
