Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.

Guest networking.

Anybody looking to buy this product, be warned as you will only get approx. 18month lifetime and no way of getting your data back when it fails.

I loved the function, wireless ease of use and simplicity, at least when it worked. Alas, mine died after approximately 18 months of service. Not what I'd consider acceptable for something you'd expect to be heavy-duty since it's advertised as having a "server-grade" hard drive.

I used it as an external drive I had LOTS OF INFO in it and it quit working. i LOST EVERYYHING. If the internal drive crashes there is no way of fixing it …More

I am rather annoyed that all the people who bought the original TC have come out of the woodwork to moan about the device again, even though it has been greatly improved. The product may have the same name, but that shouldn't mean that it is subject to the same criticism. Had it been called "Time Capsule Plus" then none of these reviews saying "mine died after 18 months" would be here. So here's a few points:
1. I don't own a Time Capsule 1TB. I own the very-recently-demised Time Capsule 512GB. But it is essentially the same product with a smaller drive, so I'm probably better equipped to review this product than most of the people here.
2. Only the first model of Time Capsules have the faulty power supply (please note, NOT the hard disk). The Time Capsule model sold now does not have this problem. Though obviously, some people may have faulty products as with any purchase.
3. Those who bought dodgy Time Capsules which died were usually offered replacements. A friend who bought one of the first ones about two years ago got a replacement machine just two weeks ago, well outside warranty.
4. The drives are also salvageable! Get yourself a hard disk caddy (or plug it internally) and use a disk duplicator like SuperDuper! and you will get your backups back.
5. Finally, my Time Capsule is a fantastic product and works exactly as advertised. I'm not too worried about future problems because I know what to do if it does develop a fault. But at least my review is based on the latest model. I appreciate there are a lot of upset customers out there, but please do not confuse prospective customers by moaning about your old and obsolete products here.

TC Crashed same time as my Macbook Air

Talk about the worst timing. My Macbook Air was crashing (18 months old) and I did one final backup. It went fine. Got my Macbook Air back after 3 days (HD replacement), went to do backup... my 500 GB TC died. Lost everything. Also had an iMac HD crash on me at 13 months. Never had this problem with (ugh) PC's... but there it is, I said it. 3 HD crashes on 3 different machines from Apple. Macs are genius products, but they really need to give the manufacturers of the HD's an earful. 2 stars given for the concept, but 3 stars taken away by the quality and poor reliability. …More

I bought the Dual-Band 1TB Time Capsule in November 2009, and it worked wonderfully at the beginning, albeit a little slowly (even for transfers over ethernet or USB). However, after 3 weeks of use, it just stopped working. There was no light, no sound, no work. I had read the many reviews saying that the drive tends to stop working after 18 months and didn't believe it. My dad has an older Time Capsule which is still kicking, now 2 years out. However, the fact that mine stopped working after 3 weeks makes me think that there is a production problem that still needs to be worked out. I would not recommend the time capsule to anyone, except those who enjoy gambling with you data. …More

If you are using the Time Capsule with a computer that's covered under AppleCare, the Time Capsule is covered. Note that they do NOT have to be on the same receipt. From the AppleCare Protection Plan terms & conditions:
"An AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, an Apple-branded DVI to ADC display adapter, Apple RAM modules and MacBook Air SuperDrive are also covered under APP if owned by you and used with the Covered Equipment."
Also, from Apple's page advertising the plan:
"An AirPort Extreme Card, AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, MacBook Air SuperDrive, and Apple RAM when used with a Mac covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan"
Note that I (and others) have verified this in practice - I am getting my dead 18-month old Time Capsule replaced under the APP on my MacBook pro. …More- Answered by RG from Portland

The new 1TB and 2TB Time Capsules might have a different brand of hard drive or if not, they might have a better more reliable hard drive. The new Time Capsules were released April of 2009; so no one can say that" My 2TB Time Capsule died after 18 months!" I do not know if Apple has changed the hard drive or not; I would think they would try to do something about the two star rating for this product! …More

So can this replace my wireless modem to allow my Internet and printers to be used on a wireless home network? I'm on a 24" iMac.

It will replace the wireless part, but you will still need a modem for your cable or DSL. Many DSL modems have it's own router built in, this moves your Apple router one step away from the actual internet. This disables certain features that require a direct connection to the internet such as Back to my Mac.
If you do have two routers you will get a Double NAT error in Airport Utility and a flashing amber light on the Apple router. If your internet provider can't help you turn off the router in your modem they may be able to replace the router/modem they sent you with just a modem. I had to explain what I was trying to do to get them to replace it. If they can't replace it and you want to, or have to, stay with this provider you can set the Apple product to Bridge Mode where you're passed through directly to your ISP's router so services like iChat can connect to the destination directly. …More- Answered by RS from Alameda
