When you take this pen into a meeting - at a minimum you want it to connect quickly, capture everything you write, and capture it When you take this pen into a meeting - at a minimum you want it to connect quickly, capture everything you write, and capture it with a fidelity that is usable at a later date.
The bluetooth is flakey - you can't rely on it connecting. And sometimes reinstalling the app is the only way to repair the device.
It drops out while you are using it - or takes time to start capturing and misses the beginning of what you are writing.
Often the capture is so bad with added noise from 'strokes' recorded when the pen is in the air between letters words or lines that the result is unreadable and the character recognition worthless.
Post-production - exporting, correcting, merging, tagging, organising - is also difficult and unreliable.
The documentation is incomplete and poor - basic tasks like selecting multiple snippets not explained clearly. …

Livescribe got it right this time !!

I use this Livescribe 3 Pro Smart pen for my business meetings. The pen looks good and is not at all heavy like the previous one. So you can write longer. The pen also has a decent battery life. I have used it continuously for a 4 hour meeting without a problem.
The recording feature allows me to revisit my notes in 2 formats. I can now revise and carry on where we left off in the previous meeting by just putting on my headphones and going through my previous notes when in flight. So I am the first one to accurately summarise the previous discussion. This makes my meetings effective.
I just wish the pen could have more types of inks (Colors and textures e.g. like what a pilot pen would write). But I am sure they will come up with something. :) …

I used to love this company. Now they too are one of the many customer biting hounds out there. Their earlier iteration of the p I used to love this company. Now they too are one of the many customer biting hounds out there. Their earlier iteration of the pen, prior to blue tooth, had good UX. I used it for over a year, and loved it. Then its oled display died (not only mine, but that of many many others as well, look up on line). Without that it is barely usable. They of course didn't replace it, because it is (barely) out of warranty. Now I think a company that has such deep flaws built into their products that affect an inordinately large number of their customers should replace their products even outside of warranty -- in some enlightened legal jurisdictions they are required to do so. However, being one of their early adopters and having actually enjoyed the pen earlier at that time, I thought to give them another chance. And silly old me, bought this new pen. What a disaster.
First, at least in New Zealand, the stationary is hard to come by. And it is more expensive. Apple sells just the pen, and not the stationary. In the past I was able to print the paper myself, and use it with the older pen. This newer pen is far more flaky. Even with a commercial grade printer I couldn't get the pen to recognize the self-printed paper. Worse, the sheer degree of build-cheapness that this company has resorted to is completely beyond me.
The pen itself doesn't feel as sleek and well built as its predecessor (don't trust the pictures, this thing is quite FAT and ugly looking). But that isn't even half of it. This is supposed to be a blue tooth device. One thing every (usable) blue tooth device has is a pairing button. None on this one. Instead they had to be cute -- and cheap -- and skip on the button, instead making you use an icon on the paper to get it into pairing mode. As you keep using the icon, of course the ink obliterates the dots, and it stops working. They supplied only one icon with the pen, so now you have none. Can't get into pairing mode. Go online and print the icon, of course it doesn't work using even the most high resolution color printer I could find. So what do I have now? A 300 dollar ugly, fat pen, whose only digital/electronic feature is a green LED (Ok, well, I guess there is the "stylus" in the back.) If this is smart pen, man I'd hate to see the Gump version. …

Let me start out by saying that I do like this pen for college lectures as it is extremely helpful for note sharing and having notes available at your fingertips when needed. However, the pen is still too bulky and hard to write with. Also, after removing the stylus tip to charge the battery it never fit the same and would not stay on - it fell off frequently. Unfortunately the stylus tip is long gone and on the floor of a lecture hall! The best improvement to the pen, in my opinion, is the feature of recording from my iPhone as the older model recorded directly from the pen and recorded every movement. If you're a fast writer or press hard while you write it made it difficult to hear the recording. Overall, a good buy. …

Not market ready
I have tried hard to like this device, however it is very much a product in development in my opinion.
1. The promoted feature I have tried hard to like this device, however it is very much a product in development in my opinion.
1. The promoted feature ( Refer Page 6 of the Livescribe+User Guide) in not correct:
"Your Livescribe 3 smartpen captures your notes even when you are not connected to your device. When the LED IS SOLID GREEN, YOUR SMART PEN CAPTURES YOUR NOTES AND TRANSFERS THEM TO YOUR DEVICE THE NEXT TIME YOUR SMART PEN AND DEVICE ARE CONNECTED". The support team has confirmed problems with this feature.
2.The Livescribe + interface is very basic and freezes quite often.
3. Sync to cloud storage unreliable.
Not worth the money or the trouble in my opinion. …
