Better than I was expecting...
After a bad experience with another manufacturers Thunderbotl Drive I was a bit apprehensive about trying again; the G-Tech was l ike a breath of fresh air, can't fault the build quality, it is quite heavy (definately not portable), very quiet (but not silent), as for speed... a 750Meg folder containing 200+ MP3's dropped onto the drive takes about 2 seconds to copy!
Based on previous experience, I have tried everything I can (short of pulling the cable) to get the drive to disconnect while in use, so far (I happy to say) I have failed.
I'm very happy with it, expensive but well worth the money if you need/want fast storage, next step is to use it as the boot drive for an iMac... …- Written by Martin M from Poole

Good..But Not Great
Fast, but not the fastest in this price range.
Not noisy, but it's still a little annoying if you sitting next to it.
Nice to l ook at - but still, it's only a HD.
Thunderbolt Cable is not included - even at this price.
Remember this Hard Drive is 2 Partitions - so you can't use it as fx. 1 x 1GB + 1 x 3Gb. It can only be used as 2 x 2GB or you can split one of them into smaller partitions. …- Written by Tony L from København Ø

No cable?
I've bought G-Tech ext HDD before, and broadly happen - this is my third.
Upon delivery and opening, I was shocked that the dri ve didn't include a thunderbolt cable. The description does makes mention, but in a very subtle way I missed upon ordering.
A product that costs 100's of dollars, and does not include the cable necessary to connect it to the Mac. Extremely disappointing. …- Written by Clinton D from Alexandria

Second time's the charm
Needed fast storage for editing video on 2011 17 MPB. Seemed to work fine until I used it as a source for Time Capsule. Then the d rive would self eject every five minutes or so. G-Tech customer support tried their best but to no avail. Returned and exchanged drive next day. New drive works great. Quick, quiet and reliable. Perfect for FCPX. …

Can this be used as a file server with my MacMini?
- Asked by Martin C from Carlsbad
- 11/12/2012
Answer
Yes, but you'll have to have it plugged into a computer that has a Thunderbolt port, this G-RAID has no USB or Firewire interface so check if your Mac Minis are new enough and that they do have a Thunderbolt port. (look for the little lightning bolt symbol).
In my honest opinion though, if your going to connect this to your wireless network, you might be better off getting a far cheaper USB or Firewire G-RAID. The main reason you'd buy a Thunderbolt hard drive is for the speed, which is killed as soon as you put it on wireless network as current wireless speeds max out at about 300Mbps, over 30 times slower than Thunderbolt. Whereas USB 2.0 has a max speed of 480Mbps. Your looking at roughly £100 difference between the Thunderbolt G-RAID and the USB/Firewire one, so its worth considering.
Back to your original question though, yes a G-RAID would be fine for file STORAGE but in order to serve those files to a network it needs to be connected to a computer thats connected to your Wi-Fi network.
I'm personally buying a G-RAID to do my backups to as Thunderbolt is the fastest way to restore files and copy vast amounts of data. …- Answered by Harry P
