Thin, minimal design.
The lightweight, durable Smart Cover has been completely redesigned for the all-new design of iPad Air. It protects your iPad Air screen without covering up its durable aluminium back. So your iPad still looks and feels like an iPad — just with a little extra protection.
The Smart Cover is made of polyurethane and comes in six great colours. It also features a soft, colour-matched microfibre lining that helps keep your display clean.
A hinge magnetically aligns the Smart Cover with iPad Air for a perfect fit, while magnets inside help it stay put.
The Smart Cover does double duty as a keyboard stand. Fold it back to tilt iPad Air into a comfortable writing position.
Wake on open. Sleep on close.
Open the Smart Cover, and iPad Air magically wakes up. Close it, and iPad Air automatically goes to sleep.
FaceTime and film stand.
The Smart Cover folds in just the right places to become the perfect FaceTime and film-watching stand.

A big step back as a keyboard stand
Before this I had iPad 3 and the Smart Cover is way better. The new one's three fold design makes better to hold iPad up for photo Before this I had iPad 3 and the Smart Cover is way better. The new one's three fold design makes better to hold iPad up for photo and video but the connection part is so unstable now that typing experience just got much much worse, it's considerably more unstable that I find it annoying typing on a constantly shaking surface. …

Much worse than original Smart Cover
After using a 3rd generation iPad with the original leather Smart Cover and loving it, I bought a new Smart Cover with my iPad air After using a 3rd generation iPad with the original leather Smart Cover and loving it, I bought a new Smart Cover with my iPad air. The new covers are worse in every way. The three panels instead of four causes the cover to be less stable when in its stand position, and the cover did not stay on the iPad very well and shifted back and forth, leaving parts of the screen exposed. I was also disappointed at the lack of a leather option. I returned the new Smart Cover and will be looking for a different option. …

This one not so much. Seems like since they completely covered up the magnet that connects it to the iPad its not as stable. I falls off all the time and I certainly can't use it on my lap because it always folds out. They really didn't think this one thru. Will probably return it and look for alternatives. Especially at a $39 price point. Not good. Feels very cheap …

Gets better as you live with it
I had the previous version of the iPad and it's cover so have too made comparisons.
When I first got this cover I hated it in com I had the previous version of the iPad and it's cover so have too made comparisons.
When I first got this cover I hated it in comparison with the old version. Now, after a few months, my feelings have mellowed. Main points are as follows:
It's thin and keeps the bulk of the iPad Air to a minimum whilst protecting the screen and providing a typing slope;
The magnetic wake up is great and many apps (Endnote Peek and others) are making good use of it;
The rubber on the outside is tactile and non-slip, I put my iPad down cover down when not in use so as to reduce damage to the back, and this is a great feature;
The magnetic attachment of the cover is much better and is not damaging the case of the iPad as the previous version did;
The cover seems to be more hard wearing than the previous version.
Points of note
When new, the cover seems to not sit flush with the screen when closed, one of the folds holding it off. This settles with use and time and is fine on mine now;
If you fold the cover with the rubber out, traction on a surface is better, the cover doesn't pick up anything off the desk and the iPad sits at a slightly steeper angle which, for me, is more comfortable for typing etc. The problem is that if you are a heavy handed typer, the cover can collapse. Again, this was more noticeable when the cover was new and happens with much less frequency now, the folds clearly relax a little with use;
If you look carefully at the Apple images, you notice that the cover is folded in the opposite way with the soft inner surface outermost. This way you will not suffer collapse when typing but the iPad is at less of an angle, the soft surface can slide about a bit on a polished surface and can pick up grit that could scratch the screen after you close it. If I had my wish, I would want Apple to recognise the limitations of the design and go back to the 4 panel version. That said, it is certainly not enough of a issue for me now to consider a non-Apple alternative as the benefits outweigh the occasional issue (though don't think this lets you off the hook with future designs Apple, it was a bad move to change it!). …
