    Top of the line!

    • Written by from Bridgeview

Went into my local electronics store looking for a new router. I went over to the shelf and picked up a high-end wireless router ($300) Walked over to look at the apple stuff. Started talking to the Apple attended on staff at the store. He informed me that Apple also has a wireless router that is easier to set up And very user-friendly with AC technology ( The latest Wireless Technology) . I certainly did not know this! ( Apple needs to advertise this more) I also was informed for the same manufacturers price of other high-end wireless router! Apple offers a high-end wireless router with a 2 TB hard drive for back ups. I was very interested in this because we own two MacBook Pros with retina display. I purchased the Apple airport time capsule took it home to set it up. The set up was so very easy! From unboxing the airport Time capsule to completion was only 7 minutes! I was totally blown away with the AC Wi-Fi range! I'm getting double the wi-Fi distance that I was used to!! Thank You Apple for simplifying our lives! Keep up the great work!!

    Not really good enough

    • Written by from Beccles

I gave this three stars but it really should be two, this works as a time capsule straight from the box, but thats it, as a wireless setup, its not very good, if Im not in the same room I cant get enough signal for my Mac Book Pro to pick it up, i wanted to use it to store all my music and photos but haven't discovered how to do that yet, it will mean I will have to be in the same room to do anything with them when I do. The Apple shop in Norwich told me I have to remove the BT router when using this but they don't know what they are talking about, it has to be wired in after the router or you don't get any internet!!

    Time Capsule Crash

    • Written by from Mount Pleasant

I've had my Time Capsule for a little over three years now, and although it was relatively easy to set up and performed well for a while, it just crashed without warning. It has not been overworked as it just sat in the same location in my house for the entire time I've had it, but it has completely crashed. The amber light now shows constantly and it cannot be rebooted (soft or hard). I went on the forums and see that others have had the same problem and indicated that the hard drive on it is fried. So any of the data that I had backed up on the machine is also now lost forever. Given how ridiculously expensive the extended warranties are from apple (might as well just buy two units), I didn't opt for one at purchase. I would have expected better from an Apple product.

Great speed and functionality however decreased range

    • Written by from North Adelaide

I bought the ATC mainly for the additional backup and was pleased to see that it boasts good range, speed along with the 2tb of available backup. Works great have been able to access TC with all machines and the wireless speed is up on my previous router however we live in a double brick apartment and the range compared to my old Dlink DIR618 is questionable. I have needed to add an AP Express as an extender so we are able to get access in the bedrooms of the apartment.

Overall great product but disappointed that the range is not up to what is advertised.

Everything has worked great for me so far and I've had it for about a year. The backups work and the router works.

    More Apple magic!

    • Written by from Streatley-on-Thames

Arrived next day and took all of 20 minutes to install as the new network hub with the Airport Extreme and Express units daisy-chained.
Did a full Time Machine backup in 8 hours - silently! (my previous ext hard-drive was very noisy). A great pice of kit.

I bought an AirPort Extreme which I could not get to work properly, I returned it and had an Apple Store set this up for me and it has so far worked faultlessly.

That's 2 days of my life I won't get back

    • Written by from Sheffield

Awful product. Great idea in principal however in practice dreadful. After 3 hours struggling to get my mac to find the drive it finally started the initial back up. Next morning all appeared well however after a quick check through the back up list only 1 further successful back up had been done. Set it to back up and it started. After 10 minutes it stopped as it. "Couldn't find the disk". Tried resetting, restoring, erasing all to no joy. Airport started telling me that the drive needed repair however after not being able to find any way to do this I erased the drive and started again only then for the drive to completely disappear of my list in finder.

There are a number of 4/5 star reviews and it appears that these things either work or they don't. Personally I'm glad it failed before I had anything important on it. I'm going back to my manual back ups with a local USB drive. Far more reliable and recoverable should the worse happen and it fail.

Cracking Apple idea but either poor implementation or poor components. Really not worth the hassle or expense. There are far cheaper and more reliable alternatives out there.

Mine has gone back to the shop for a refund.

Airport Time Capsule great for WIFI......

    • Written by from Winchester

I bought this to improve my WIFI and my god its amazing............. 5 mins out the box I did a speed test and got 123mb/sec (my service is 120) so very very impressed, got 99 from iphone 5 and about 135 from my ipad air.

In terms of a back up solution not at all what I expected but probably my own fault for not checking it out properly.

I wanted something where I could literally just send a photo from iphone straight to the storage device so a bit like AirDrop, but sadly it doesnt do this.

In summary I would buy just the Airport Extreme instead of the time capsule

    Works well so far

    • Written by from Brownstown

    Fast = yes
    Easy = yes
Can it host files like a NAS = yes
To set this up you just have to log onto the router from each Mac computer

What would make this better? = convenient local sync like a personal cloud such as drop box or sugar sync

I'm still working on how to network attach a USB printer...

    Fast and Easy

    • Written by from Sonoma

I needed a backup for my Mac and went with Time Capsule. I thought I would use my current Airport Extreme as an extender to improve signal in the farthest room in my house. The 811.ac technology was a nice-to-have for future upgrades.

As a router, this thing really flies. Fast and strong coverage across the wide angle I need. I don't really need to use my Airport Extreme as an extender. The directional antenna feature (I think) only works with the 811.ac devices, but no worries, my current devices work great.

As for the Time Machine, the set up was so easy I was kinda disappointed I didn't get to play with it more. The application figured everything out for me and I was up and running in no time. I added a scheduling app from the App Store for $4 so that the backups would be done at night. The default setting is pretty aggressive with hourly backups.

All in all, couldn't ask for more.

    Apple removed SNMP

    • Written by from San Jose

I recently purchased one of these to replace my Airport Extreme that finally died. I was in a rush, going on out of town the next day for two weeks, so I didn't enough time to research it. For some reason Apple chose to remove SNMP which means I can no long monitor the device. Had I known this I would have purchased something else. Everything works fine so no complaint other then I am unable to monitor the device.

    Simple easy and fast.

    • Written by from Brisbane

Apple household with a number of Apple products including Laptops, desktops, iPad's and iPhone. All except for one, are WiFi connected and situated/used in various locations in the dwelling. There are no solid barriers for the WiFi to (attempt) penetrate. Walls are gip rock and timber framed with solid timber doors. Outer walls are brick. Outside (dwelling) WiFi connectivity, from the AirPort, is excellent.

The time capsule portion is used via a ethernet connection and also WiFi, sharing the backup of 2x devices using the WiFi, networked via a second Airport Time capsule, used to extend the WiFI Network (establishing a extended WiFi network is simple, using the Airport Utility APP). All works well and the drives a easily made visible on the network if desired. WiFi speeds are excellent. The desktop machine connected to the second time capsule via a ethernet connection, but using the extended WiFi network for internet connectivity, performs similarly to a laptop directly connected via ethernet, to my ISP's router. The desktop is a going on 5 year old, iMac. Other devices (iPads/iPhones) backup, using the WiFi network to iCloud (automated).

Setting up the 5GHz network capabilities is the key. If your devices can use 5GHz make sure they log onto this. My iPhone 5 can "Speedtest" at up to 100Mbps (download) to my ISP's server and regularly tests at 50Mbps plus, down to a non iSP server (all servers are within 20klm of my location). It tests at 2/2.4 Mpbs up (that is fast for this country). I do have a "fast" HFC connection (for this country).

Time capsule is a easy to use excellent backup system and is well complimented and supported by the AirPort. The WiFi is excellent, probably the best I have used, with the ability to combine the 5Ghz and 2.5Ghz frequencies allowing very fast network speeds, with the later model Apple WiFi capable products.

    Complete waste of $$$$

    • Written by from Randwick

Bought this to improve wifi signal throughout my 2 level home. It is physically connected to a Fritzbox 7270. Easy set up, no problems there. But resulting signal is no better than the original Fritzbox.

Lesson learned: spend my money on a good modem, and a NAS system like Lacie 2 big.!!!

    Typical Apple Brilliance!

    • Written by from Worcester Park

I balked at the price and went off to find a cheaper alternative as my old back up drive had failed. The new one would work but not as stated without a complete reformat. I also had to use my Mac as the server. Having purchased the Time Capsule I Plugged the drive in and followed the simple on screen instructions. My main data is still being backed up but I can access from both the iPads and all the iPhones. That took less than ten minutes to set up without using the manual. This is excellent tech. that works out of the box.

    Everything you can ask for!

    • Written by from Pittsburgh

I purchased this rougher due to the reliability issues I was having with my old one. I have had it for about a week now and am simply amazed at how much better this one is. The range coverage I am getting is almost twice as good as the old one. I also am averaging a speed thru the router 4-5mpbs faster than the old. This router is definitely worth the cost!
