    Questionable Usage

    • Written by from Houston

What's wrong: If you have a case for your iDevice, it most likely won't fit unless the case is super thin.
Adapter or lightning cable: The price for the adaptor is $29. The price for a lightning cable (1m) is only $19. But you may also need an extra USB power adapter which costs also $19. So why get this adaptor? It only makes sense if you cannot or do not want to switch cables and access the power adaptor (since it may be hidden behind your desk) all the time. I'd rather suggest to get an extra lightning cable and invest in an additional power adaptor (total $38). It's worth the extra $9. You will be much happier!
If the lightning bit were sticking out just a little bit more, it would not be a problem with the cases at all. Not really a practical design.

    Great Design ... but

    • Written by from Sheffield

As usual, a very soldly-engineered product from Apple.

Does exactly what it says on the tin - but ...

    1) VERY, VERY EXPENSIVE for what it is. £10.00 would be reasonable but £25?!?

    2) As others have mentioned, the adapter takes NO account that you may have a protective case on your iPhone/iPad. When trying to charge my new iPhone on my 30-pin Pure Clock Radio, the adapter fitted fine, and so did the iPhone on the adapter but the fact that I had a protective case on the iPhone meant that the connections on the adapter didn't make contact with the contacts in the phone. I had to take the phone out of the case in order to use the adapter to charge the phone.

So, lose 2 stars for horrendous expense and a further star for the lack of thought regarding the use of the adapter with an iPhone/iPad which has a case fitted. result - 2 stars.

    SHAME APPLE!

easily the WORST apple product ive bought

    • Written by from Dakota Dunes

to begin things off $30 is a little steep for this small adapter, especially when it doesn't even work half of the time. Many people complain about it not fitting while they have a case on their phone. I have the otterbox defender for the 5c and it fits perfectly with the case on. However this accessory STINKS! i can not even plug in my phone to an iphone dock without getting the "accessory not supported" popping up. This is ridiculous if you're going to charge this much at least make a product that works

    Useful but has disadvantages

    • Written by from Clarence Center

I bought two of these when we upgraded our iPhones to the 5S and we have to take our cases off whenever we use these. If you're planning on using your old 30 pin adaptors, get the 30 pin to lightening cable over these adaptors.

Good adaptor - too bad the pin is short

    • Written by from Nyborg

I have a Philips night lamp whit the old 30 pin connector, so I got the adaptor for lightning, but when I place my iPhone 5s on the connector, it's to short due to my original leather case from Apple! So I have to take it off all the time not very cleaver made.

    It doesn't last

    • Written by from Mt. Lake

I got one right when I got my phone and at first it worked great for my old ihome but after a year and a half it has slowly stopped working so now I have to tilt it in ridiculous poisons just to charged my phone and hope I don't bump it or get a text or it will move then I have to start all over. Then I can't just buy any case because I don't want to take it off every night there was not very much consideration on cases. So in other words just buy new ihomes.

It work but very unreliable, bulky, buggy, and odd the thoughtless design!

    • Written by from Bethlehem

I bought this since I first force to use it to connect to my Audi. I have to either slip out the phone case or completely take it out in order to plug this stupid design adapter in. At the time, I didn't see another overpriced adapter that apple made. It works, however, deserve 2 stars and my >20 years Apple fan is more and more impatient and ready to not be a fan if another stupid move the company make again. Sigh...

Don't buy this if you put the phone in your case, or if your intend use on the move, it not worth the trouble, spent 10 more bucks get another one!.

Lightning connector still too short to work even w/ a slim case, June 2014

    • Written by from Greenwood Village

Needed so that iPod Touch 5th generation (lightning connector) will dock with a CD/alarm/radio (30-pin).

With a super-super-slim case on the iTouch, the iTouch appears to attach, but the lightning connector does not actually go in all the way, so its presence will not register at all, even to charge. But without a case the iTouch connected, synced and transferred the correct time to the clock, at first attempt and subsequently works well - it both charges and also plays through the clock's speakers.

My concern is that since the jerry-rigged contraption now pokes up almost 8 inches vertically out of the dock, the lightning connector protrusion in the adapter is going to bend itself out of commission before too long due to the weight of the iTouch and the inevitable wear and tear of removing and replacing it.

But we have shopped for three months locally, online and even on tv and could not find a CD/alarm/radio/iPlayer with a lightning connector in the dock or that came with a built-in adapter. And as my daughter has a ton of CDs and we don't want to spend hours putting them onto her iTouch, this is the best answer. The one we got came from HSN, btw, in case anyone else is looking for something similar.

I am rather shocked that it's been years now that reviews have been posted here saying that the lightning connector is too short to work when an iProduct has a cover, and yet Apple still hasn't apparently lengthened it. It probably needs about 2-3mm to make it work. Don't they read? Don't they care? Shame on you, Apple.

    30pin adapter

    • Written by from Spring

I brought to use with my Bose player, since it was recommended to me and I was told it would work with my iPhone 5. No such luck. Plays the music, but not very loud and does not charge the phone. Unfortunately I had already thrown the receipt away.

Functional charge adaptor, no audio for docks

    • Written by from London

I have a couple of docks (both Sony) based on the 30 pin design, and I sure thought carefully beforehand. After all, Apple were promising this was not just 100% compatible but also fully digital.

Fact is, NEITHER of my Sony docks accept audio OR controls from these adaptors.

I don't mind changing minor tech for necessary upgrades, but at £30 this is a terrible adaptor. You're better off chancing one of the 3rd party options to at least get sound.

However now I have to find tasty new docks!

    Conclusion: don't buy unless desperate.

Won't work with 5s case nor with 30-pin to HDMI adapter

    • Written by from Miami

I bought the Lightning to 30-pin adapter to use my Iphone 5s in my car but I have to take off the case every time I want to connect it, the metal contact of the adapter is too short to fit with the case on. Additionally if you want to use it with the 30-pin to HDMI adapter you get a message that "this accessory is not supported by this iphone".

    Hit and Miss

    • Written by from Weston-Super-Mare

This adapter is definitely too expensive, it's fine for charging your phone but can be hit and miss if you want to play music. I found it won't play music on my Klipsch docking station but it does through the belkin in my car.

    Disappointing

    • Written by from AMERICAN CANYON

Bought this to work with IPOD Touch 5th generation and my BOSE sound system. It will only produce the sound from the IPOD speaker not the sound system speakers . If you have the BOSE sound system with a DOC with the model number YDS-12 by Yamaha, this won't work. However, did try the APPLE 8 pin -30 pin Lightning adapter with the "CORD", this WORKS.

Cant be used with a case

    • Written by from manchester

Its works, but only if you take your 5s out of its case. I've even got an apple case but the connector is too short and doesn't take into account the extra 1mm width of the case.

    Lightening adapter

    • Written by from North Thoresby

Bought this - expensive and only needed as Apple have change the phone again. I had a enhanced GPS Tom Tom car kit - due to the depth of this adapter this is now £100+ of obsolete equipment and have had to buy a screen mount to continue to use the Tom Tom app. Also as per other reviews you have to take the case off to use this which defeats the point of a case most of the time. Why oh Why cannot all mobile phones have a universal charging / docking socket - this is what all paying customers really want I believe.

    why apple why!

    • Written by from st davids

So this adapter does the job it specifies - however it is ridiculously short thus is you have a protection case around your phone you will have to remove this case to use the adapter. The perplexing issue I have is that you have managed to design the charger so it is compatible with casing, however on this item this has been disregarded. For £25 I would have expected an item that was more fit for purpose.

Waste of Money and far too expensive

    • Written by from Gillingham

I bought this as I have just upgraded to an iPhone 5s from a 4s. The plan was to use this on my expensive Bose SoundDock Portable, but it's useless. You connect it and it shows that it is charging etc, but you check back 2 mins later and it's no longer connected. I have tried a friends Lightning adapter and have had the same results... I have also tried my adaptor on my brothers Bose equipment and the same disappointing results.
The only thing I have found this works on is the car charger.
Thanks Apple, I have now got to sell my SoundDock Portable and pay out for another expensive replacement.

    iphone 5 adapter

    • Written by from Camberly

My star rating is based on the price as I think that this product is much to expensive for what it is. Although it lets you use all of the old IPhone 4 chargers, it is the price that lets it down!
