    Performs well and looks great.

Althought a little pricy, I did mind spending a little extra for the look and reliability. It fits my iMac perfectly and gets the job done. Great product!

Apple USB Superdrive is a piece of junk

Apple should stop making this - unreliable and seriously overpriced for what it is. Unrepresentative and damaging to the Apple brand. I regret buying it.

    Apple Superdrive Tryout

    • Written by from Elizabeth City

I don't understand all the negative ratings of this product. I tried it out tonight with a movie DVD, and a CD from work. It's pretty simple for me, just look around your screen and find what you need. It plays well, ejects well, piece of cake. I'm not an IT guy, and I'm 61. I do have mine plugged into a new MacBook Air. If you have it plugged into some garbage MS machine, well that's maybe your problem. BTW, this Apple stuff just works. That's all I want.

    Works great

Not sure about all the negative reviews. I bought this recently when I switched to a newer MacBook Pro without a CD drive. I use it primarily for downloading audio CDs but have also used it for burning audio and video. No issues at all with the performance of the drive. Gave it 4 stars as I think it is far to pricey for the functionality.

Love the simplicity of this product. Works perfectly, very fast, simple to use with clean lines and uncomplicated design. Have recommended this SuperDrive to two other people who have also been impressed.

Elegant but very limited usability, particularly for the new MacBook

    • Written by from West Boylston

Be aware that this drive only works with certain Mac models and ONLY if plugged either directly into the Mac or into an Apple connector. It does not work through a USB hub, even a powered hub. This issue is a particular problem for the new MacBook with its single USB-C port. The SuperDrive works fine when connected to the Apple USB-C to USB adaptor. But then you cannot connect any other USB device!! I rip a lot of CDs to my iTunes library, which for space reasons is on an external USB hard drive, so I have to juggle iTunes libraries to do a simple operation.

I guess the problem may be solved when Apple eventually releases the USB-C multi-port adaptor . . . let's see: plug the SuperDrive into the USB port on the multi-port adaptor; plug the USB-C to USB adaptor to the USB-C port on the multi-port adaptor, then plug the USB hard drive into the USB-C to USB adaptor (or maybe through a USB hub, if you want to also connect a mouse!)

Yeah, Apple, that's an elegant solution!! But the drive does look beautiful . . .

    Disappointing and unreliable.

Sad to write this review as I love Most Apple products. I bought a USB Superdrive with my iMac less than 2 years ago. The drive is only used infrequently for storing or retrieving photographs. The first one became unusable in less than a year. It wouldn't eject the disc and I lost all the data stored on it. Neither would it register on the iMac so I couldn't force eject the disc either. It was replaced and unbelievably in less than a year the replacement has done exactly the same thing and is unusable. We have quite a number of Apple Products in our house and this one seems to be the white elephant!

Apple's worst and lowest quality device.

    • Written by from Kalamazoo

Just from a pure hardware perspective, this thing is a utter failure. It's pretty and all, but totally unreliable. Spits out pristine CD's and DVD's for no reason, does not always connect or show in finder. Loud, clunky POS. I love Apple but now know why they are dumping physical discs. Bought this to replace my failed drive in my MacBook Pro. I own a ton of Apple hardware. NOTHING has failed except this failure of a product, and my optical drive in my MacBook.

Much as I hate the great Korean copier, Samsung, buy their external optical drive instead. Half the price. It's ugly, clunky, and uses two USB ports, but it works.

    A very handy accessory

    • Written by from Raunds

It is a little annoying that Apple have chosen not to fit optical drives to Macs anymore as there are a few of us dinosaurs still left that like to use them.
This, however, plugs the gap just nicely.
I bought this so that I could upload all of my music CD's and ripped DVD's to my iTunes library.
This it has done without any problem whatsoever. Simply plug in the USB and you're good to go.
It's design is sleek and unobtrusive and it sits comfortably on the desk whilst the finish compliments the iMac, keyboard and magic trackpad nicely.
All in all it has performed as well as the built-in drive on my wife's MBP and I would happily recommend it to anyone.

    Sad

I got a MacBook Air and this little SuperDrive before I moved overseas. After 2 months, the stupid thing would not eject. I tried all the suggestions online, but nothing worked. At first, it would still play the DVD that was stuck in there, but now it won't even do that. Seriously Apple??? I'm sure it would be no problem if I took it to an Apple store, but the closest one is a few countries away.

    SO slow

    • Written by from barstow

this would be a zero star if i could.

i have 14 years worth of DVD photo files for archives. i still archive to DVD AND little external hard drives. so when i bought the new macbook pro i also bought a USB super drive to burn DVDs, read old DVDs and enter photo data into a catalogue program. i used toast 10 to burn. i have toast 11 but that just sort of sits there. 10 at least works.

but it is slow. not just a little slow, but so slow that went cataloguing photos it can either take an hour - should take a few minutes or hang up altogether. i used to have an older version of my cataloguing software that worked much faster so i had this work-around.

now with the new laptop and maverick that no longer works.

using good DVDs, highs-peed, best burn speed on the super drive is 4. yes, 4.

is there a better 3rd party drive out there, because this is virtually unusable?

It hates my iMac 5k, or my iMac hates it!

    • Written by from Littleton

I successfully (albiet occasionally) used this burner with my 2014 MBP, and TREID to use it with my 2015 iMac 5k, but it wouldn't work with the iMac. Multiple bad burns, endless error messages, etc. Apple replaced my SuperDrive, but the new one has the same issue(s).

    Not recommended.

    super drive fail

    • Written by from Clayton

By far the worst product i have owned by Apple. The first disk inserted was stuck and none of the online "tricks" have worked. I am extremely disappointed with this product. Now for the hour (each way) trip to return it. I guess I should have done more research instead of trusting apple to release a good product.

Ridiculously bad for an Apple product

    • Written by from Pullenvale

It's pretty embarrassing for you Apple when the cheap and dodgy DVD drive that my teen daughter bought (and has had for 2 years) outperforms this "superdrive" in every way! The superdrive seems to decide whether to work or not on a whim, and if you can get it to work, randomly decides to not eject the disc which requires hours of frustration to just get the thing back out! Now it won't mechanically accept the discs and so I'm left with the choice of forcing it in and then dealing with the inevitable refusal to eject. Really really disappointed in this very poor product.

I used this less than ten times in the first year ... now it only makes clicking noises mostly ... it does copy a CD to my computer, but it takes several hours!!! Terrible product. They should recall all of them, from the reviews that I see here.

Apple USB SuperDrive is Super Horrible

    • Written by from Phoenix

I bought this super drive last August and used it to burn about 10 cd's. Put it away in my drawer and haven't used it since. Just pulled it out to burn cd's and it doesn't work. I plug it in to the back of the iMac and it just makes a clicking noise and won't even load a cd. This is the worst thing I have ever purchased.

NEW USB SuperDrive DOES NOT WORK

    • Written by from Mississauga

I purchased my first APPLE COMPUTER since the MAC PLUS. PLUS a NEW USB SUPER??DRIVE.
DRIVE WORKED WELL for ripping 15 cd's to iTunes.
    Then the PROBLEMS STARTED.
Now if I put in a disk it spins, clunks and clunks then spits the disk back out.
NOW I UNDERSTAND why APPLE PUSHES the EXTENDED WARRANTY.
I have spent more than 6 hours on line with Apple Technical support. (They have been very professional, patient, and polite)
BUT obviously they don't read these reviews. (This is a bad product and Apple should be embarrassed to put their name on it.)
NOW I know why THEY REMOVED IT from the MAC MINI.
I'm taking it back to the Apple store tomorrow.
SHOULD HAVE STUCK WITH a WINDOWS PRODUCT; At least in my experience they work past the warranty period.

    Looks great, works great.

    • Written by from Bridlington

I'm not sure what people's general opinions are about the removal of built-in optical drives, but honestly I'm glad my MacBook Pro didn't come with one when I ordered it late-2013. Naturally it meant I had to buy an external optical drive and I have used it plenty of times. I have never had any serious issues; the only minor problems I've had is when I've been using blank discs and not told the drive to do anything with it so then the MacBook Pro stops recognising there's a disc in there. But that's the advantage of it being external - No force eject required, I could just unplug and plug it back in again!

Really easy to use and having it means I can also lend it to my dad when he needs to use discs. Highly recommend this if you use discs on a reasonably regular basis.
