MOST POINTLESS PRODUCT I'VE EVER BOUGHT

    • Written by from St Lucia

This is the most RIDICULOUS object I've ever bought. It is not a cover, it's only a screen protector, and it doesn't protect the screen when you're using the ipad. Plus, it doesn't function properly as a stand, unless you plan to just sit your ipad on the desk without touching it. This may work when you're watching a movie, but that's about it. You cannot use the ipad while using this product as a stand unless you want to get a sore neck, sore hand, sore shoulder, etc., due to the ridiculous angles (10 degrees, or 80 degrees). What a complete waste of money and resources, and a ridiculous product.

Cover breaks apart after 1.5 years of use

    • Written by from Pickering

Would have expected a more durable product from Apple. The Smart Cover seams have come apart with the result that my iPad(3) keeps sliding out. Will be replacing the product with something else from another manufacturer.

    A big step back

    • Written by from Belmont

I had a nice leather Smart Cover for my 4th generation iPad that I really liked. So when I got my iPad Air 2, of course I would get another nice Smart Cover. Nope. Apple doesn't make it in leather anymore. So I got the red plastic cover reluctantly. I took it back within 48 hours. It was a fingerprint magnet. So I reluctantly got a dark gray version. At least now I don't see every smudge...

The current Smart Cover is the same as the one for the original iPad Air, so others know this already but it was a surprise to me. It has three panels instread of four. The old one always held the triangular shape. It's very hard for three panels to hold this shape. The old one had a nIce metal hinge that let it fold completely over. This one doesn't have a good hinge and seems to fall off a lot.

I have since gotten a case with a four-panel cover that works just like the old Smart Cover.. So that proves that four panels are still possible even though the Air is slightly smaller than the previous iPads. I would prefer to have a cover vs. a case but that's what it took to get a cover that works. I think Apple took as big a step back with the Air Smart Cover as they took a step forward with the Air and Air 2. Apple seems to have forgotten that a cover or case contribute significantly to the ease and comfort of holding the iPad. It's not just a protective cover. Why sell something that makes it hard to use?

Awful Product - If I could give negative stars I would

    • Written by from Salem

From day one, this case has never propped up my iPad. The case always always flops over. Also, the case is now cracked in many places. I have had this cover for just over one year. I rarely use my iPad. This is an A-W-F-U-L product!!! Do NOT buy this product! Based on the other reviews I have read, I am not alone.

Hey Appple! I want my money back. I think your billionaire company can afford it! I expect a response, apology and refund quickly.

Case constantly detaches from iPad. The last time it did this it fell face first onto concrete. Cost me almost £100 to get it repaired. AVOID!!

    Damaged my iPad

    • Written by from Derby

I've had a Smart Cover for my iPad 2 for almost 2 years. Whilst it looks good, retains the slim feel of the iPad and it's nice to see it unlock after opening, I wouldn't buy another.

Somehow my iPad has a scratch down the screen, despite it being very well looked after. Also, and this is quite a fail, when I removed the case, the side edge where the magnet touches, is really quite badly damaged, right along the length of the iPad. The magnet also has the same damage, it looks like the magnet has stripped the silver away completely.

It has also stopped standing properly, in landscape, it's too weak after 2 years of use and just topples back.

If you really want to protect your iPad, go for the Case rather than the Cover. It's pretty much useless.

Did not last a full year

    • Written by from Wanamingo

I bought a black one for my wife for Christmas last year, and by Thanksgiving this year the "spine" started to come apart, which kept the cover from aligning and putting the iPad in sleep mode, even though the cover was closed. Also, when my wife would fold the cover all the way back flat against the iPad, the magnet would put the iPad in sleep mode, even though it was open. I wish I could attach pictures of how the cover is falling apart. Disappointed.

Like this better than the full cover

    • Written by from Coral Springs

I've had both this cover and the full magnetic cover and I prefer this one. I don't fold the covers all the way back making it easier to grip and use the camera. I prefer to fold it in half and the ends at the fold tend to stretch a bit on both cases. Both my cases were blue an the dirt does show. The full cover to me is bulky and hard to slide into my purse. It does protect better but it's just so bulky and since the most delicate part is the screen, this cover works fine for me - no damage when it fell on hardwood floor. I use my iPad all the time and the magnet holds just fine and I don't see any scratches. I'm getting a new black one now.

    horrible cover - 0 star

    • Written by from Rio de Janeiro

Hi, Apple, and thanks for making this cover because it gets dirty! Cover only fits one way! When you are in the stand mode, iPad slips right off! And there goes your $400-530 iPad with all your data on it. Screen cracks, cover slips right off and I'm disposing of this now

Does exactly what I bought it for

    • Written by from Houlton

I received my Smart Cover today in a timely manner. It is well made and aligns perfectly and securely with the iPad 4. My reason for purchasing it is to make using the iPad around the house more convenient than the more bulky Snugg case which I also own. The Smart Cover is designed to only protect the screen so when traveling I will slip the device into the Snugg case knowing that the iPad has more complete protection.

Corner screen cracked - Cover just slipped off

    • Written by from Utrecht

This cover is slim, it slides into place easily and then fits snuggly. Unfortunately, it also comes off very easily. The first week I had my iPad Air I took the ipad from the table to my couch and along the way - slam - the iPad slipped out of the cover, out of my hands and fell on the hardwood floor. One of the corners of the screen cracked immediately.

I do prefer slim - my iPhone has only the screen protector - but this cover gives you unconsciously the suggestion you can pick it up a certain way, when you can't. If you don't want to risk having your screen cracked - buy the case. It's also easier for traveling as the back is obviously protected.

    Absolutely perfect

    • Written by from Jackson

I wanted a case that did not take away from the beauty of my new iPad while making it more practical. This case is perfect. It is beautiful, simple, and functional. I've had it for a year and a half and it still works great, little dirty but completely functional. I think I will be upgrading to the Smart Cover to protect the back soon.

    NOT for travel.

    • Written by from Chicago

I got my case today, and while it looks really snappy, it's utterly useless for the ONE REASON I bought the thing. I would NEVER use this cover alone for travelling. It is far too flimsy and will not protect your device from even the most gentle trip through an airport x-ray machine.

I wouldn't even put it in a purse or day bag with this cover on it. It's guaranteed to fall off and you might as well not have it on at all. I'm sure that when my husband sees his, he'll want to send it back immediately.

This is extremely disappointing. I'm now forced to buy yet another hard case for travelling because that's why I own an IPad in the first place.

Since buying, my ipad's not been seen in the nude.

    • Written by from CARDIFF

A friend who was extolling the virtues of his ipad also recommended buying this cover. Having followed his advice both with regards the ipad and cover, I can confirm I'm very happy and impressed with both.

Accessories can sometimes let down the hardware, and it's not always because they're cheap- just cheaply made or of a terrible design. This cover beautifully complements the kit. Its smooth matte surface is not only smart but has proved stain and grease resistant. The hard, reinforced edging protects it from drops, and the foldable cover also acts as a stand (2 options here, unless I'm being unimaginative - only had it three months!), and a kind of handle. It must be the only product of any kind that I've owned that I've used everyday and yet still looks brand new; not a tear, a stain, not one sign of wear. And as a result of using it, the ipad is in similarly pristine condition.

I don't tend to write reviews but then, it's not often you think complimentary thoughts about the makers of a product you own, is it? The creators of the Smart Cover should very proud in all but the rather boring name of this great product (how refreshing: something that's better than its name suggests, not vice versa). Since buying it, my ipad has not been seen in the nude.

    More colors and patterns PLEASE

    • Written by from Phoenix

I am constantly slipping my IPad in and out of my purse all day...the magnetic cover instantly turning the IPad on and off as it opens and closes is great time saver....and who has the time to pull it in and out of an envelope type case every time...so the cover works!!

Now, it's time to get creative and make it in more colors and or in patterns, or even trendy Designer logo covers....you've done it for IPhones...now it's time to trend up our iPads ...
    THANKS

    Smart Design. Has some limitations.

    • Written by from Salt Lake City

Some of the reviews here are a little puzzling. If you thought the cover (it's not really a case) would protect the back, you didn't look at any of the photos. Also, being surprised that light colors show dirt more easily than dark colors? Hmmm.

I've had the black leather case for at least two years now and it is finally starting to wear out and get a little loose on the iPad, causing it to toggle off/lock more easily than it used to. No stains though... try the leather and dark colors to help yourself out.

All in all though, I think it's a pretty slick design. The magnets are a clever way to connect, and I don't think it comes off all that easily. I've never had it fall out of my hand because of the magnets or cover. I also never pick it up by the cover alone which is what some reviewers seem to have done. The ability to use it as a stand is great... a vertical orientation would be nice if possible. It doesn't protect the back... true story. Some clear cover stuff would help with scratches or scrapes.

A nice design, but if you want every surface protected, add clear covering on the back or look for a different option.
