    A real life-saver!

    • Written by from Hiram

I bought one of these, as we have 2 MacBooks and an iMac that we use for personal and home businesses and thought I better have something in case I lose a drive on one. I've owned many Macs since 1993 and have NEVER had a drive failure. Well, after 10 months of having the TC, a MacBook Pro had a logic board failure, due to a power outage. It corrupted and damaged the drive. Had both replaced at the Apple Store. So what do I do now? I took the MBP home and restored it. Everything was as good as new! Everything was restored, including the desktop picture and icons. I'm a believer.

Planning on getting the 3 TB TC for our offsite business.

Not durable - weak link in your system

    • Written by from CHESAPEAKE

    A money pit!!! Won't last!

I was excited when I was able to set up a wireless network in my home and back up my data with the same device. I noticed it was always very warm to the touch - an experience a majority have reported - not good for electronics. I was hoping it would last, but very disappointed when it did not. (You'll be lucky to get 2 years out of it [warranty good for 1 year])

Can't repair them... Apple "Genius" said, "It's broke" and after asking what he suggested, he said, "We have other ones for sale" end of story...Looking for a better and more reliable solution for a sensible price... don't waste your money!

    TC 2TB

    • Written by from Miami

I have owned the TC 2TB for more than a year now and all I can say is "wow"..... great product, wifi works incredibly good. I had a Linksys router before and it would drop people so I switched to the TC 2TB.

I save my backups to this drive and another internal hd on my Windows 7 PC (cant have too many back ups).

BTW. This drive works just fine with Mac and with Windows PCs. I transfer files between the Windows based PC and my MacBook Pro. I have never had any issues.

My only wish was that the 3TB version had been available when I bought my unit.

    I highly recommend this product.

    Good.. until it failed

    • Written by from Bishop's Stortford

    Worked brilliantly until...

    1) Apple upgraded the computer software and then it failed to work with the time capsule until a much later upgrade

    2) The power failed. This is a blatant issue, I've read it time and again and despite them saying it was fixed prior to my model, it still failed and that's it - dead.

Considering you're paying over the odds to get what you expect to be a superior product I was very dissappointed. Having said that, while it lasted it did the job seemlessly behind the scenes as you'd hope.

    Yep, Mine's Dead Too...

    • Written by from Mornington

Mac man since 1992. Have seven in the house right now. Bought my 1 TB Capsule with Apple Care in Sep 2009. Died today. Haven't even had 3 years out of it, since I went on extended holiday earlier this year (Capsule powered down and disconnected while absent). On an open desk in my study, never been moved, protected power supply, backs up only two machines. Dead. Very big disappointment. First poor product I've had from Apple, but obviously from reading these reviews, not the first Capsule to die. I really have to think twice before replacing it.

    Peoples Misconception ruins this product.

    • Written by from Tamworth

This product does exactly what is advised on the tin! It will backup your mac's with great ease! This device is for backing up your machines entirely to avoid loss of data if your drive is to fail. The USB port on the back supports another drive that WILL! work with an xbox or ipad.

    Mine failed too

    • Written by from Sydney

After 2 years, power supply failed. Worked great while it worked, but some 10 cent electronic device decided enough was enough and I'm left with an unrepairable plastic box. Reverted to my Express and a $100 WD back up drive. I want to buy another Time Capsule but I can't trust the quality/longevity... Especially when I read reviews here quoting similar unreliable device stories . It might 'just works' but it didn't work for long enough for the price.

    Ode to mac-intosh-style "Customers"

    • Written by from Monterey Park

OMG! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!
? What... People post and rate failures after 18 months of using a 5 month-new product ? even considering warp of time/space continuum, these folks are not terra-based.
Anyway, - I'm a tech consultant -and... "Macintosh" lineage customers (mac-intosh-style "Customers", Gang Nam or whateva) want their Computer to Work for *Them* without Thinking about "Computer" themselves -great (yeah, me too.. big deal.. -but Wintel support pays better ;-/).
but, when, i see assertive declarations like:
[ After searching on-line for a solution it appears that this is a major issue for all Time Capsules. I am now outside … More ]
... I suspect these systemic failure reports ALL are "a major issue for all Time Capsules" due to product design: supplied-power-quality , ventilation , and cooling ...
ALL Apple products SHOULD INCLUDE: supplemental constant-voltage power; liquid-cooled heat-pumps; self-cleaning sub-micron/HEPPA air-intake filters; and 3600 psi air-burst jets located at each external port.

\/\$ : Brown-outs and unplanned power cycles... *are* all bad for "Computer"
”“ : "like clock work" excessive heat and very low-humidity... *are* all bad for "Computer"
=3 : Dust, bunnies, soot, sprites, paper, entrails... *are* all bad for "Computer" ventilation!
? Air-burst jets ? YES, even JPL/NASA Mars rovers succumb to months of debris build-up...

=O : also, (*obviously*) Lightening, static-electricity, and sharing the same power cord as a 20A multi-vibrator with phase-lock-looping... *are* all bad for "Computer"

    I don't get it?

    • Written by from Tarawa Terrace

How does your backup drive die before the computer its supposed to back up? Worked great for about 2 years until it stopped working completely, I tried to do a full restore now it doesn't even show up on the computer. Way too expensive to only last this short of time. Not making that mistake again!

    Fool Me Twice

    • Written by from New York

Second time capsule to break down after ~18 months, limited warranty only extends for 1 year. Very frustrating experience. Not doing it again and wouldn't recommend it over cheaper, more reliable alternatives.

    Save your money.

    • Written by from Sydney

Don't purchase this external drive as you will be high disappointed and surprised to how long it takes to transfer data to it..... Ridiculous to think people would actually give this high ratings when it really is such a time and money waster.

Will Only work with Mac book pro and iMac. doesn't work with iPod, iPad 2 or my Xbox, do not buy this product, as u can see from all the products i have, i love apple but this was definitely not their forte. please do not buy, u will fall out of love with apple, feel almost robbed as i cant bring it back, a product at less than half its price would have done a greater job.

    Great Wireless Router and Backup

    • Written by from Fergus

    It just works!

I was quite impressed on how easy it was to setup and it's working great as my wireless router with more than 5 devices connected to it.

I've got two Mac Book Pro's on Time Machine and it backing up seamlessly. I had to recently use time machine as I had inadvertantly changed some images and it was simple to bring back those images to their previous state. Highly recommended!

And bonus I have an external hard drive now connected to it and I can access it through wifi. No longer do I need to hook it up to my computer anymore. Very Nice!

Best Way To Wirelessly Share LOTS OF FILES

    • Written by from Findlay

I first purchased a WD Live thinking that this was a great way to wirelessly share iPhoto and iTunes. However, it was to slow and took way too long to transfer files from my computer to the HD. I then purchased a 2TB WD Passport and a router with a usb hub on the back. This worked but was still sluggish. Finally, I purchased a Time Capsule and was able to transfer 400 + GB of data in less than 4 hours. This might have been even faster but I was transferring the data from a 2.0 usb, so this could have slowed it down a bit. So, not I have a 2 TB Time Capsule that I share all my photos, music, and movies across all my computers on my network. I also have a 2 TB WD plugged in to it for backup on Time Machine.

Stopped working right after warranty was up

    • Written by from Westbrook

So right after the warranty is up, the drive quits, won't backup the computer, can't access files anymore, etc. I thought I was the only one, but after reading the reviews below, I think this is one of Apple's mistakes....Now I have a $300 wireless adapter and no workable drive. Don't buy it.

    Best investment in computer equipment...

    • Written by from SHEBOYGAN FALLS

Money well spent...I have had my Time Capsule 500GB since early introduction and I LOVE it. It has worked flawlessly and effortlessly in the background since purchased. I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro Retina and after 2 weeks with the new computer it had some kind of an issue and it dumped all the files I had worked on for the last 2 weeks, including fonts I had installed, emails and some other stored data. I was so simple to retrieve the information I needed from my Time Capsule. I plan to purchase a new, 2TB Time Capsule this week and give my old one to my son. Thanks Apple!

    So good I got another

    • Written by from LONDON

Own a 1TB 3rd gen model thats seen three years of flawless use . We have had no need to recover a complete computer but the ability to recover individual files with Time Machine is a fantastic feature allowing you to create new files (think document) based on an earlier version of an existing file. Wireless performance is a great improvement over old technology with the 5Ghz really flying along. We need more backup space for additional computers. I suppose I could have added an external USB drive or NAS, but as I know the TC works so well I think its a lower risk. Went for the 2TB 4th gen model. Its now the main TC with the original moved to another area of the house to improve the wireless network. The added bonus is that part of the house that had poor wireless connections (across a solid wall), now has vastly improved 2.4ghz connectivity.

    Gutted!

    • Written by from Newark

Excellent product while it works - my power supply failed after 18mths, which was just enough time to fill it with music.... Need to start again now - with a more reliable product from elsewhere. I expected a backup/storage device of this type to be a bit more resilient and to fail on such a basic component is frustrating. If there is such a history of failures I would expect a little more consideration from Apple - I was offered £10 off a new one! - maybe the PSU should be made an external unit?
