    Poor Design

    • Written by from Philadelphia

I was very excited when apple released this mouse, knowing that as a designer this scroll ball would definitely speed up productivity. However, after a few months of use, it's clear that this mouse is a result of poor design! The slight open areas between the ball and plastic do nothing but collect dirt and dust. Therefore causing the roller ball to only work in one direction if at all.

Even after using several cleaning methods, from air cans, to cleaning wipes, eventually the thing will just become inoperable.

Come on Apple, with all the technology you come up with, you can do better than this. For $50 it's not worth the frustration this mouse causes!!!! So do what you do best, and make something simple and not worth it, into something better and useful.

A constant battle to keep the scroll ball working

    • Written by from Salt Lake City

Works great in the beginning. Very customizable and cool-looking. But soon, you find that the scroll ball begins to malfunction. There are temporary fixes (Windex, alcohol, pressing hard and scrolling), but the problem only gets worse with time. In general, I love Apple products because they are robust for years. This product is a dog!

    OK not mighty

    • Written by from Wantage

This mouse is more versatile than the original, anything with more than 1 click is, but the scrollwheel needs cleaning inconveniently often, and there is not a good way to do it, dirt is displaced but left in the body of the mouse. It also loses position every few minutes, the pointer shooting off to a random extreme position, wasting time.
All 3 of these mouses I have owned have these faults, so it is hardware/software not a faulty unit.
I -do- like it whilst it is working though....

    What were they thinking?

    • Written by from Capitola

An otherwise fine product is seriously marred by the inability to be able to clean the trackball. There is no way to open the mouse and clean the innards, and the "fixes" are temporary.

the only apple product i hate

    • Written by from Russell

there seems to be a lot of complaints about the scroll ball, which is kind of funny. it's the main feature in this mouse that i enjoy, but seems to be the worst at the same time. My main issue with this thing is that the cursor doesn't move smoothly across the screen. like i move it across the desk smoothly but the cursor on the screen doesn't move at a constant speed. i know this is something to do with the software and the cursor acceleration but it's just terrible. i tried it with a standard non-apple mouse and it was the same way so... yeah maybe it's more of a software issue. i also find the mouse just uncomfortable. like yeah it's pretty and goes nicely with apple's simplistic styling approach, but i think this is an area where that got in the way. i'm used to a razer lachesis too, though, which is beautiful. also there's an awful lot of friction between the mouse and the desk, even with a mousepad. it's weird, everything apple is great, i even love the keyboard, but they really dropped the ball on this mouse. i gave it 2 stars though because of the scroll ball innovation which is a wonderful concept, but not implemented very well

    Avoid avoid avoid!!

    • Written by from Coventry

It is a sleek mouse with a comfortable design but incredibly unreliable. Not only does it stutter on many surfaces (the cursor jumps across the screen), the underside is also incredibly prone to scratches.

Worst of all, the scroll wheel. It stops working oh so often. Before anyone points out user fault, I have NEVER dropped or hit the mouse against anything hard. The wheel just stops working and refuses to scroll in one or more direction, after 'persuasive methods' it comes back.

    OK but

    • Written by from New Milford

The mouse works well but why is the cord so short????? With the macbook having the USB ports on the left and being right handed the cord constantly gets caught where the screen and body meet in the back. The only other option is to lay it over the keypad which is not a good solution. Had to buy and extension to use it, not good.

loved this mouse when I first got it. The scroll ball stopped scrolling down after just a few months. This quickly becomes a big pain in the neck!

Works best left in its little plastic bag

    • Written by from MISSISSAUGA

As other reviewers have said, the scrollball is the main Achilles Heel of this product. It gums-up and requires cleaning almost daily in active use. It frustrated me to the point of actual physical abuse. Unfortunately, whacking the Mighty Mouse causes it to develop more problems so is not recommended.

But in addition to the scrollball issues, the mouse is extremely sensitive to how you hold it. It can easily confuse a left-click for a right-click and vice-versa. More frustration! And while attempting to scroll with the scrollball it will very happily register a random right or left-click too. More whacking ensues ...

I'm off to get a Kensington mouse tonight because I'm developing a tick and scaring the pets by loudly swearing while trying to deal with all the annoyances of this thing. Life is too short -- just leave it in the little plastic bag it came in if you got one with an iMac. It works best that way.

    Scroll Ball Problems

    • Written by from Austin

After extended use in normal operating environments the scroll ball will eventually stop functioning properly and fail to scroll down, it continues to scroll up. This is, in my opinion, a known design flaw with the Mighty Mouse and buyers should be aware that eventually their scroll ball will stop working. The internet is full of temporary fixes to restore functionality, but the real fix requires Apple to reconsider the poor design of the device.

Good initially, but the scroll ball is obviously poorly engineered...

    • Written by from East Wenatchee

I have had my iMac now for 6 months and have been using the corded mighty mouse that came with it. I came on here to purchase a new mighty mouse, but after reading the reviews I felt I should concur with me follow posters...this mouse is aweful. Once the scroll ball breaks down, the mouse is useless!! 6 months, are you kidding me?? Now I have to pay another $50 to get the same thing!! Yeah, right. I think I'll get a mouse elsewhere and I would recommend you do the same thing! Come on Apple, really?!

Looks cool, on your desk, but that's about it.

    • Written by from Savannah

I do a lot of graphic design, so I was looking forward to having a scroll ball on top of the mouse that would allow me to manipulate the horizontal scroll bar as well as the vertical.

    Positives:

    - Scroll ball is extremely useful for any type of graphic design and large web pages.
    - Looks really cool.

    Negatives:

    - Even at its highest tracking speed, it's unacceptably slow.
    - Since the "button" is one-piece, you have to move your middle finger all the way to the right side of the mouse to right-click. Otherwise, it misinterprets it for a left-click. Only solution is to make the “peace sign” with your right hand to keep your index and middle finger far enough apart.
    - Makes a cheap creaky plastic sound every time you click something.

I REALLY like scroll ball thingee, but this particular mouse has too many problems to make it worth putting up with.

    Not exactly brilliant

    • Written by from Reading

Looks like these have a 14 month life... On the plus side the trackball is great for positioning, on the negative side after a month it became unresponsive - you need to then continually clean it after every 10 hours of use and it gets progressively worse. Very frustrating - and unlike a regular mouse it is a sealed unit which means you can't take the ball out and clean it out properly - why do Apple insist on this - they refused to repair my iPod under warranty and I am unable to do it myself without using a can opener to open it and destroy it in the process. Anyhow, since it bust I forced it apart and the trackball is sealed up inside the sealed unit. Designed in California by idiots it seems.

Fragile and poorly designed; a real disappointment.

    • Written by from BIRMINGHAM

The good bits: the design is sleek and it matches well with my MacBook. It feels comfortable in my hand and sideways scrolling can be handy.

The bad bits: the side buttons are only really practical if you are willing to squeeze and use them both as one button.

The scroll ball is a real weak point. For web browsing it's fine, but on many applications, especially in Windows and Linux, even more so in games, it is too sensitive and I have been unable to fix this. You touch it a tiny bit and it zooms or scrolls far too much. It can be really hard to get things precisely where you need.

It also suffers with the dirt issue. Originally mine responded well to the cleaning instructions. However, over time it has degraded and cleaning does not improve it. I now have to press quite hard to scroll up a page, often causing it to press the middle button (and thus do something else). It is now pretty much unusable. I shall be attempting to return it for this reason, having bought it only 9 months ago.

There is another fault, where it seems to stick when clicking, as if something has shifted out of place, and makes a horrible noise. This comes and goes. I don't know if this is just my mouse or caused by a design weakness similar to the scroll ball.

If I had paid only £10 for this mouse I would have been annoyed.

I would recommend this mouse only to people who a) use their computers less than an hour a day and b) do not need to do anything outside of fairly standard OS X applications and c) do not have to carry it in a laptop bag most days (it is clearly not robust enough).

Great mouse for the first few months then you can toss it

    • Written by from Murphy

This mouse is really great but the little track ball, while really cool lateral moves, gets dirty then jams up and won't scroll at all. I just gave up on mine after several months and had to toss it. I haven't looked into how to clean it but I can't figure out how to even get it apart to clean so I'm going back to my fail-safe Logitech.

    more often frustrating than useful

    • Written by from Wilson

There are a number of problems I have with this mouse.

    1. Keeping it clean - I feel that I have to clean this every other day to keep the scroll wheel to work.

    2. I had to disable the side buttons and the middle button because no matter how much I tried, they were just so much more sensitive than buttons on other mice and I was always accidentally pressing one.

    3. Like the cords on some other Apple products, my mouse cord began to fray right by the USB connector. The wires are coming out and though I'm trying to keep it together for the time being, it's not going to last long.

    Wireless Mouse

    • Written by from Gnowangerup

A great little device until the track wheel gets dirty! Lets face it, our fingers are not always as clean as the inside of a Mac testing lab and in time the track ball stops working. I don't mind having to clean it - but I do mind not being able to open the thing to do it properly!!!

    Great concept, terrible performance

    • Written by from Western Springs

what frustrates me so much about this mouse is how much I love the way it is DESIGNED to work, but I hate the way it DOESN'T work. I do a lot of audio editing and the 360 degree scroller is WONDERFUL when it works. But after one year it now malfunctions so much I've had to get a replacement (and I'm not dropping another $50 just to have the same problem come up again). Better to just get a cheap mouse and supplement it with a Contour Shuttle Xpress (I love that thing)

    Not so Mighty Mouse

    • Written by from Calgary

It looks good, but that's about it. Track ball often stops working after a couple months of use, probably dirt clogs it up. The slim profile is brutal for power users and your wrist will cramp up. The right click feature is a pain and you will often click it without intention, better to use as a one button mouse. I like my mighty mouse beside my mac because it matches the keyboard, but truthfully it's a real let down as a production tool. This is one apple product that you will want to replace.
