    MagSafe Tips

    Written by DM from Hamilton

    Nov 7, 2006

I've enjoyed the MagSafe adapter with my MacBook immensely, a far superior design than previous adapters.

I'm not sure about the other people who wrote reviews, but let me share a few tips to help you with your MagSafe power adapter, and keep it from excessive damage.

    1) Don't just yank the MagSafe from the charging socket on the side of your MacBook (Pro). Place your fingers on the small white plug end such that you can gently pull up on it. It will come away from the socket easily, and this won't cause you cord damage down the road.

*The MagSafe was meant to save your computer from an occassion where a quick 'whip' from a tripped over or stuck cord would knock the computer from it's place.

If you constantly yank the cord from the socket, you're simulating the same effect as above. I don't think it was designed for hundreds of yanks, but rather for the few times it will happen inintentionally.

    2) Do not plug it into your computer before you plug the adapter into the wall socket. Sparks and other electricity-related activity could potentially damage your computer.

Observe these steps and you won't end up like the others on here.

    they replaced mine!

    Written by RH from Burbank

I have had my computer for 15 months and forgot to extend the warranty. I thought i was SOL when my cord started to fray... I went to the mac store and they did an out of warranty exchange for me because this power has been updated. The new one has a thicker cord. I would suggest stopping in a store before dishing out the cash!

    I guess I'm a lucky one!

I've had my Mac Book for a year and a half and have experienced no problems with my power cord. My daughter has had her's for two years at college - no problems either. One tidbit of advice - the power cord SHOULD be plugged into a power strip, not the wall outlet - to protect your laptop from power surges during electrical storms. This also eliminates the "falling out of the wall" syndrome some people experience (although mine has never slipped out).

I won't argue that Apple should not beef it up a bit, but just like their iPod headphones, Apple seems to like using very light gauge wire whenever possible. Maybe a more rugged "traveler" model could be introduced...with heavier wiring and a better fit when using a wall outlet. Apple are you listening?

    Great Costumer Service

Written by ML from San Gabriel

Last week, the wires for the cord melted the plastic sheath and eventually made the charger almost useless. I took it to the local Apple store and even though the entire store was packed with people, they replaced it. I really appreciated the good costumer service.

    No issues so far.

I am not doubting others have had problems. I would simply like to note that I travel for business. In fact I do not have a home, twelve months of the year I stay in hotels. That means that roughly five times a week i am packing and unpacking my MacBook. I have had my MacBook for six months and not one issue with my magsafe yet. It has traveled all over the US, to Scotland, London, and South Africa. This adapter also autoranges from 110v to 240v so no voltage converter was needed. And a quick side note for anyone who has had a problem within a year of MacBook purchase (which is mostly everyone at this point.) Apple should replace it for you under warranty and if you purchased AppleCare that extends to three years. And it really is as simple as calling them or taking it into an Apple store if you happen to live near one. They will work with you they do not want you to be unhappy. All it really would take is a phone call. Stop spending $80 on something you can have replaced for free.

Convenient, compact, and it doesn't constantly trip me or pull my computer off the desk. Just as advertised, and nice little tabs for wrap up storage.

I've been using the MagSafe Adapter on my MacBook for 2 1/2 years now with no problems at all. No sign of fray, overheating at all. I was reading all of the bad reviews and feel I may have lucked out on a "good batch". I treat mine carefully (Never wrap the cord using the "holder" provided as it puts strain on the cable possibly damaging it internally) I just loosely wrap it in a loop and place it in a cheap camera bag when on the go.

I have found no problems with the MagSafe Power Adapter. I was looking to buy a second one for my home use and saw that it was only rated 2 stars. I have to say that this is the best power adapter I have ever used and I am buying a second one so I have ready power at home and in the Lab, (office for those who don't work in Labs).

I've notice several poor reviews of this product, but I still have the one I got with my MacBook in March of 2007 and it works perfectly fine. I have not had any trouble at all.

I like this charger i got my macbook about 9 months ago and i have to say i really like it. I especially like the magnet connection so if you trip over the cord (or any pets you may have) it just pops out. And to all the other reviews about how it breaks and all that, I recently had a Toshiba and there power cords broke over time to with wear and tear, i mean i went through two of them. So compared to my old chargers i really like this one. And just a tip to keep it in good shape be gentle with it don't pull on it all the time, and if your laying down and its plugged in don't let where the cord connects to the magnet bend thats the most sensitive part and then that little end breaks or something inside breaks thats the end of it and you have to spend more money on a new one.

I've already had in incident with the cord. Some one in Starbucks wasn't looking where he was talking and tripped over my cord, but the cord popped out, and my laptop was still on the table, and not the floor like my last laptop. Thanks Apple..

I have had my macbook for just under three years, and I haul it around everywhere. Two years ago, my kitten's razor claws sliced through the power cord in several places exposing the wires. I wrapped the cord in electrical tape and have continued to use it all this time with no problems. I am thinking of replacing it now because the tape is coming off in places and collecting bits of lint and hair, looks bad in study group. But the cord is still working fine!

Am I the only one who hasn't had a problem. I have had mine for two years now and no problems. I'm looking at the reviews because I need to buy a second one for traveling. Yes the transformer (the brick) gets a little warm which is normal and doesn't effect my use. Love my MacBook!!! And despite the bad reviews I will be buying a second power cord.

I've (fortunately) had absolutely no problems with the power adapter that came with the Mac Book I bought exactly two years ago. I've put it through a lot of use/abuse, taking it from home to work every day. Unfortunately, my greyhound chewed the cord in half and I am now, quite frankly, a little terrified to purchase a new one with all the "issues" mentioned here. Guess I'll bite the bullet and shell out 79 bucks.

    Fingers crossed

    !!PRICELESS!!

    Written by KG from Surrey

    Mar 16, 2007

When i first purchased my macbook i tested this 'much celebrated' feature as every laptop I've ever owned had a damaged power cord connector, basically i pulled at the wire and the magnet was too strong and actually pulled my laptop across the table.

Thought nothing more of it until my bro tripped (nastily) on the cable "PING" went the wire at 100mph across the living room, i was gonna screech till i realized the macbook was exactly where i left it, considering it should have been in a million pieces across the floor i deem this product PRICELESS!

    Excellent Product

    Written by DS from WALSALL

After using one of the old style plug adaptors for some time, the new MagSafe Power Adapter is a real breath of fresh air, and really demonstrates the constant innovation and attention to detail that keeps Apple pushing forward in the market.

It doesn't break away so easily that you can't use it somewhere like on the arm of a chair connected to the power, or on a bed or other surface where the Macbook isn't level, but it does break away if it feels that there is a pull of unnecessary force that may move the 'book off the surface that it's on.

We've three of these in the household, one used at a desk, two mobile. They all work fine, the oldest is over two years old and looks new. No heat issues, no frayed cables, nothing amiss.
I love the design, love the fact I change the plug for a cord when extra length is needed. I've even noticed PC users looking at the thing with envy, and it's a power supply!!

I'm confused by all the negative comments written for this product. I have small children and pets who are constantly yanking on it and playing with it and I've never had any kind of problem with it. And I really like the magnetic break-away feature it's definitely saved my macbook from destruction numerous times! It's certainly an improvement from older models.

    Great!

    Written by PH from Tustin

Although many people have been incessant at putting down the MagSafe Power Adapter, I have nothing but good things to say about it. First of all let me just warn you that if you listen to the person who says to go against apples recommendations and buy the 85W model for your MacBook you could cause serious harm to your computer.

Here we go, okay so my first impressions with the MagSafe Power Adapter is that the design is amazingly simple. The power brick plugs into the wall so you don't have the unsightly black power bricks like on other brands (cough cough). and if you wish you can extend the cord to reach another 5 feet or so, a very helpful feature.

Anyone who is saying their cord brakes easily, this is because they have been using the product wrong. Instead of yanking the cord out when you unplug your laptop you should firmly grasp the connector on the laptop and tilt up until it releases. If you do this your MagSafe connector will NOT fray or become damaged fast. the indicator LED light on the connector is a really useful function because you can tell if your laptop is still charging whether it is on or not.
