Great design, but a bit flimsy

Love the design. Travels better than the adapters that came with my PC's. But, my PC adapters were far more rugged. Right now, the wires are pulling out of my Mac adapter and I need to buy another one. I never replaced an adapter on a PC.

Apple, Listen!
Written by ES from Missoula

I would write a longer review, but it would just be an echo of all of the previous disgruntled mac users'. This is a true design flaw, and it is just not right to make your loyal customers buy a new power cord every time these dinky little connections happen to break. I hope they fix the problem before I have to buy another cord, which will be very soon, because my MagSafe Power Adapter is currently taped in two spots. (I give two stars instead of one because of the wonderful magnet innovation)

Same problem as everyone else

Love the computer but this electrical charger problem is an issue that Apple needs to address. If you have this many people complaining about the exact same issue it would be in their best interest to fix this problem. The Apple motto is that "it just works" but for this item, only for a while.

High price to pay
Written by JN from Beachwood

Mine has worked OK for 1.5 years, but some cautions and tips:
I electrical-taped both junctions of the thin wire to the brick and the thin wire to the Magsafe
connector.
When using it, ALWAYS support the middle of the wire to avoid any sagging that
might put a bend in the junction.
NEVER use the wire-wrapping fold-out wings. Loosely coil both cords and put everything in
your carrying bag just like that.
NEVER bend any of the connections. Drape the cord over the keyboard, near the case hinge
to assure a bend-free, supported wire run if your wall or power-strip outlet is to your right.
When charging with the (aluminum) computer closed, put the brick on top of the metal computer
to allow it to radiate its heat better. ALWAYS charge it without nearby obstructions, with
plenty of air space. One time both the laptop and the brick got very hot, when they had been
parked on a leather couch.
A smart person will keep the whole assembly off of carpet or anything flammable. I recharge
mine on a bedside table - while I sleep (after reading these stories - with one eye open)!
These problems would be solved if Apple would spend $ 0.25 on strain reliefs, or $1.00
for armored/shielded cable.
These problems are OBVIOUSLY NOT ISOLATED INCIDENTS, THEY ARE THE RESULT OF
DESIGN FLAWS. Apple, we are overdue for a new and improved charger design!21 of 26 people found this useful

Apple.... FIX THIS PROBLEM!
Written by EL from Lancaster

It is not just this power cord that goes.. My husband had a mac book pro and his did the exact same thing. They work for a while then all of a sudden they stop. This one looks like it's burnt on the inside of the magnet...I am usually a big supporter of apple products, but this is ridiculous! And for 80$ a pop to replace it, it's enough to make me hopping mad!

Worst Apple Product
Written by KD from boardman
Oct 29, 2009
After 1 year of use (I treat my mac like a baby) the connection failed like so many people have explained. I assumed I had an isolated case and fixed the cord myself. Another month later the wiring within the box broke. Unable to fix this I bought another charger... Same thing happened. Now on charger #3. Very disapointed Apple.
Added note: Why is a replacement charger so expensive!?!?!?22 of 22 people found this useful

Still working, BUT ...

4 years and still charging merrily along. BUT - the blooming (for want of an acceptable word!) thing intermittently trips the house electrics!
I came back from holiday a few nights ago, plugged in and "clunk" followed by silence. Luckily the lights are on a separate circuit. The Central Heating boiler protested too!
I'm going to have to buy a new one and try my luck. APPLE, get a grip of this, it's gone on long enough.9 of 12 people found this useful

Stopped working shortly after purchased
Written by MR from Portland

A few months after buying my macbook the power adapter started failing: won't charge when plugged in unless I spend a significant amount of time wiggling the cables. For the hefty $80 price tag, this quality is unacceptable. From other reviews, it's pretty clear that it's not just me being unlucky.

I'm writing this review with 6 minutes left on my laptop. i've had this laptop for less than a year and the only problem with it is the adapter. It just stopped working. I have to purchase another one at their ridiculous prices. I think I should buy another backup just in case this wants to break down at another important time.

Deficient Adapter
Written by MM from MERION STATION

It is so annoying that this adapter does not stay in the wall socket. Also, this is my third power adapter since getting my MacBook Pro because the back simply falls apart. The cost of the replacement is terribly high. It would seem with all the complaints I've noticed on the Internet that Apple would take care of this problem.

Dead after 8 months ...
Written by CJ from Dyssegård

and basically just from sitting in the wall socket. Unplugged less than 5 times, and just died in silence. Cables look fine - guess i's the electronics. Will receive a new one free of charge (have Apple Care) - but will have to buy a spare (I use my MacBook for Business and can't wait for the spare to arrive) as the MacBook can't power up without the Magsafe. Another DKK 700 ($140) on top of the otherwise nice expensive MacBook... sigh ...
Two stars for the otherwise nice design and magsafe feature.4 of 6 people found this useful

Fix this now!
Written by SB from Richmond HIll

I can't afford to buy ANOTHER charger. The part where the cord leads into the magnetic end broke yesterday. On the actual block there's a small crack (from overheating?) I swear I'm not gonna keep buying it from here; it's too expensive. If I can find a 3rd party charger I will, because this is ridiculous. I've replaced it already and the battery too. Lately it's been overheating to the point where it burns to touch it. I'm in college now, I can't keep throwing out money for something that won't last. Yes, it charges, but it's seriously bad because of all this. And what's with the cable wrapper built in? I think it just damages the cable faster.

pros and cons
Written by NV from Rexburg
Sep 14, 2009
Pros:
- Easy ability to wind the cord for travel.
- Magnet breaks away when it should, doesn't break away when it shouldn't.
Cons:
- The unit is to heavy for a lot of my outlets. It stays in for a while, but falls out very easily due to weight. This fundamental design flaw is a huge annoyance, enough to outweigh the good features of this product for me.7 of 9 people found this useful

My love for my MacBook borders on the inappropriate so I was quite upset when my power cord started to fail. The performance of my MAC has been so consistent I was sure I was to blame somehow, until I read the reviews. MAC definitely needs to resolve this issue.

The magnet idea for the charger is awesome but my charger began shorting out after about a year and a half of use. After that it stop working completely. This problem is surprisingly common and needs to be addressed. 80 dollars for an seemingly inevitable repair is saddening.

Power Adapter for 13" MacBook

JP from Portland - your Adapter must be from the same batch as mine. Smoke and burn today where the thin wire meets the brick.
Is this a recall problem like the discoloured keyboard?
This laptop is a gem - it has been a reliable workhorse until the HD died last year and now "the brick."
Anyway we can keep it going until a Snow Leopard tablet arrives??

please address the cord connections
Written by JP from Portland
Sep 1, 2009
I am watching my Macbook charger cord slowly smolder and smoke. Where the cord connects to the brick, the covering has desintegrated, the wires are fraying, and the connection is intermittent, requiring a careful placing of all the parts just so, or no charging.
Yes, I frequently wrap my cord to travel. Yes, I am careful to not strain the material. A company as great as Apple should either:
a) fix the mechanics
or b) fix the wiring of my (and hundreds of others) chargers at no cost. I LOVE my mac, but am frustrated by this problem.22 of 22 people found this useful

I as well have experienced the MagSafe adapter failure. My adapter overheated and then it stopped working. It no longer charges my laptop.. I wonder if there is a recall of this piece?
