    Charger stinks---

    Written by MM from INDEPENDENCE

    Jul 3, 2009

I am about to buy my third one. The cord is too fragile from the charger to the computer. Why don't they sell just a replacement cord.

What I save on virus protection using a Mac I am having to spend on power cords.

can be a tiebreaker against macbook

Written by AM from san jose

I had macbook for around a year now and I had to change MagSafe charger two times. Its the same sequence to death every time. Stub connecting to the macbook starts heating up ; over a period of short time, plastic insulation near the stub connecting wire starts disintegrating ; finally it altogether stops charging macbook.

Disappointed. small issue to fix in assembly line and still Apple is mute on this.

    Not so Good

    Written by JB

The way this power adapter works is...well it doesn't. Apple, you really need to redesign this thing. I know you wanted to make the design unique and everything, but the thing is cumbersome and very bulky. Is there really a need for all the fanciness? It's just a power cord. We've had two in the last two years break on us. It sticks out so far from the wall, it is a tripping hazard too! The pricetag is a bit steep as well. BTW, I love my Macbook, but this power cord needs some reinvention.

    Redesign this product!

    Written by MM from homestead

    Jun 29, 2009

I have had to buy this product twice already within 2 years. But it seems I'm not the only one with the same problem as I have read the other reviews. The power adapter needs to be made stronger. It's bulky and heavy at the end with a flimsy cord that comes out of it. It needs to be tougher and be able to withstand "normal, everyday use." It is not fair that your cords malfunction and I have to spend another 80 bucks. It's great that the adapter is magnetically connected to the computer but it just doesn't make up for the rest of it. I can only hope that I don't have to buy this product again. It's inconvenient that I have to treat my adapter as if I'm walking on thin ice.

    Dangerous Melting

    Written by CB from Honolulu

    Jun 29, 2009

I have had this charger for less than a year. I have already replaced it once. First, it started fraying right where it plugs in to the computer. Second, it started overheating and melting. If I didnt unplug it, I think my bed would have caught on fire. Very dangerous. It needs to be redesigned.

    Works so well it's invisible!

    Written by MS from Wokingham

    Jun 27, 2009

I got my MacBook in Dec 06. I'm still working with the original power supply.

My MacBook is used for about 5 hrs per day min.

I travel all over the world with it - on average I am flying once per week, and move it from airport lounge to hotel to conference room and back again - lots of movement, flexing and straining in all the cables etc, regularly.

Sure, it runs hot sometimes - this is normal - I used to design power supplies for a living...

Because my power supply has NEVER given me any issues at all, I just don't notice it...

... which is why I accidentally left it at the office over this week!

Anyway, my particular unit works just great - I suspect my MacBook will need replacing before the power supply does - and I reckon it'll be good for another 7 years - just like my Wallstreet PowerBook (1998 model) !!!

    WHAT IS WRONG????

    Written by DM

    Jun 27, 2009

    I LOVE APPLE...GOD KNOW I DO...BUT....COME...ON
This thing is not made for everyday use. IT's too fragile! My Adapter came apart right at the top of the adapter, where the cord meet with the magsafe piece that you plug into the computer.
Apple please make something a lot more sturdy.

    Recall Now!

    Written by CC from Lexington

    Jun 23, 2009

Apple needs to recall these before someone gets hurt. I have had my MacBook about 3 years. I woke up this morning to the smell of melted plastic. I searched high and low but couldn't identify the source of the smell. I realized a short time later that it was the power cord on my MacBook. It had melted overnight about a 1/4 inch from the magnetic connector end. Thank goodness it was on my stainless steel kitchen counter and not the couch. A recall is a no-brainer. In the mean time, I have ordered an 85w MacBook Pro charger. I believe it should work.

    burn baby burn

    Written by MG from Truckee

    Jun 22, 2009

it's a really smart idea, i mean i wouldn't want my charger to get stepped on and mess up my computer but the thing got sooo hot around head where it plugs to the computer that that plastic melted just enough to not work anymore so now i need a new charger. A new charger is going to cost me $80. I give a two because it's great up until it melts and puts a dent in my wallet.

    Great Costumer Service

Written by ML from San Gabriel

    Jun 22, 2009

Last week, the wires for the cord melted the plastic sheath and eventually made the charger almost useless. I took it to the local Apple store and even though the entire store was packed with people, they replaced it. I really appreciated the good costumer service.

    Melted cord

Written by BB from NEW YORK

    Jun 21, 2009

Similar problems to other reviewers: the cord burned (turned brown) where it connects to the adaptor. It's 1.5 years old. Everything else about this adaptor is carefully designed. They should reinforce the cord where it comes out of the adapter, as it gets lots of movement back and forth at that point.

Bad magnetic end - cable fraying - not fixable

    Written by BS

    Jun 18, 2009

Agree with everyone else that poor design results in paying for an entirely new power supply when the cable is fraying at the juncture of the magnetic end.

    In the final days

    Written by IT from Bochnia

    Jun 16, 2009

A great idea, but runs so hot that you can fry eggs. Also, the connector that goes to the computer is on the fritz. LED stopped working last night and you have to position it just right to get a charge. Worse part is, it started dying just as soon as the warranty ran out.

    Mine melted today!!!

    Written by TR from BRANDON

    Jun 16, 2009

I've had my MacBook for almost 3 years, and never gave the power cord a thought. Then today, I noticed it wouldn't light up, and then I noticed the frayed plastic near the magnetic plug-in. I was shocked! I was checking online to buy a new one, and not only was I shocked at the price, but the other reviews. Before today, would've thought others were rough with theirs, but I KNOW I haven't been.
I agree, it should be redesigned. If I wiggle around with it, it will light back up, but now I'm going to unplug it before bed tonight, as I'm afraid of the fire hazard.

Onto my 3rd in as many years

    Written by AY from Toronto

    Jun 16, 2009

The original one died after a year - cable started fraying.

I duct-taped the second one's cable firmly to the magetic tip so that yanking on the cable wouldn't be an issue. This extend the life by 4 months. It stopped working last week and the magnetic tip was getting real hot- borderline fire hazard. When I removed the tape to check- the connector was still in mint condition. It fried from the inside.

Now onto my third. Not Happy!

    Good, but melted itself eventually

    Written by LM from Duluth

    Jun 15, 2009

    Pros:
Does what it should, powers computer.
Magnet is nice, that does what it should too.

    Cons:
It ran hot enough long enough to melt its own cord, right where it goes into the "box" part of it. Like others say, this can happen, and if and when it does, you have to get a new cord. You might avoid this by running it off the battery, but after four years, my battery life is about an hour, often less.
New cords are kind of expensive at $80.

    Written by VD from newark

I have to say I have now replaced my power adapter also twice in 2 years. I love Mac products and I am disappointed they have not improved the design. I do not believe it is covered under the apple care package. It seems like there is nothing else to do but purchase a new adapter again for $80 plus tax...:( anyone have suggestions out there?

    Too hot to handle

    Written by KD from Indianapolis

    Jun 13, 2009

This is the second MagSafe Power Adapter I have had to replace in the past year due to melting. The adapter gets so hot during charging that it melts its own cord. The Genius at Mac told me not to run my computer while plugged in, however, the battery does not last a full work day so it is necessary to at times run it while it is charging. Be cautious about running your computer while plugged in. I love Mac software, but this situation is unacceptable.

    Apple needs to Redesign This!

    Written by MC from TARBORO

    Jun 11, 2009

This is the second one we've replaced for my wife's Macbook in 2 years. I also have to replace mine for my Macbook Pro that is just over 1 year old. I have been an avid Mac user for 13 years now and have gotten quite a few others hooked because I've raved over the quality of Apple products, but this is unacceptable. I love the magsafe plug, but apple needs to redesign the flimsy cord to make it more durable!
