    Overheats and wore out quicklky

Written by MN from Mercer Island

    Jul 26, 2009

My charger overheated which seems to have melted to plastic around the cable causing it to fray quickly. It has no stopped working all together.

Without the extension cable it is very short, but there's no convenient way to wrap up and store the extension cable.

Magnet connection is very good though and I like the red vs green light when it's charging.

    Overheats, yet passes all tests?

    Written by SH from Blacksburg

    Jul 24, 2009

My adapter, like many others, has overheated, causing it to smoke and the outside of my adapter to turn a light brown despite being less than a year old. However, despite the overheating, when I took it to my apple authorized repair person, they said it passed all of the tests and so it couldn't be replaced. It then overheated again after I had been reassured it was fine. I refuse to buy another one when apple refuses to fix my faulty one. These really do need to be recalled. It was smoking! You can't tell me that is an ok, working piece of equipment.

magnet is great, but the cord is very flimsy

    Written by AY from Stow

    Jul 23, 2009

The magnetic connection is great. However, I am now buying my third cable, the first two having worn out and frayed at the connection points even with careful use. And for such a high price, it should not be a disposable item.

    Need to recall this product.

Written by DB from Farmington Hills

    Jul 22, 2009

Mine is less than a year old and the cord is coming apart right where the led light is, apparently just like many others. Still works and I was going to put off buying another but I never considered that it could be a fire hazard. Yikes! Guess I'll find my nearest Apple store and see if they can help me out. Glad I read the reviews.

They still haven't recalled this product? I'm outraged to find this is a reocurring issue. I set my macbook on my bed as I left the room. Walking back in I smelled the distinct sent of burning and started searching everywhere. Behold, I come to find my cord SMOKING and melting RAPIDLY before my eyes. I pulled it off as quick as possible at what I assumed was a reasonable distance from where it connected only to still burn my fingers. This was all in a matter of minutes. If I had not returned, because of forgetting something, I have no doubt my bed would have been in flames!! I expect fire hazards from thousands of christmas lights being left on a christmas tree for days NOT an APPLE product. It's almost a joke. Especially for how much they charge. I wish I was exaggerating just because I can't even believe how ridiculous this is. I have just moved to Mexico from the US where the closest Apple store MIGHT be 4 hours away. Ha, maybe something I should have considered in my decisions to relocate. I love you mac, but my love only goes so far.

    ZERO STARS.

    Adapter

    - Buy apple care, it's very cheap and is for like 3 years worth of warranty, i wouldn't have any laptop without some kind of insurance of repair, laptops are always wobbling around and can have little issues you may want to get repaired, this includes getting new adapters! And generally with laptops the hard disk only lasts 2yrs so just to be safe . Go on do it, it's well cheap!

-Every time you feel it getting worryingly hot unplug it, just to make sure it doesn't burn out, remember a laptop can run on battery even in your house it doesn't need to be plugged in 24 hrs a day.

-Keep your adapter on the floor, not on your sofa to prevent the above! The adapter being on something soft where it can't air out seems to encourage it to overheat in my experiences so now i always put it on the floor.

The magnet though has saved my laptop so many times from a horrid fall!

I've had to replace 3 so far since purchasing my MacBook 3 years ago. At $80 per power adapter it's an additional expense that should be considered before purchasing a MacBook.

    Melted and Burned!!

    Written by AW from Kowloon

    Jul 16, 2009

Last night when I was using my Macbook as usual, all of a sudden I started to smell something burning. As I was lifting up my Macbook trying to locate that burning smell, something burned my arm and I freaked! Immediately I spotted the power cable connecting to my Macbook is MELTING! I quickly unplugged the power cord before it caught on fire. It was extremely dangerous!

Today I called the Apple Care Center in Hong Kong and no one was there to take my case. I called Apple office in Hong Kong and the receptionist was being so helpless and not willing to handle my case at all. After numerous calls to the Care Center finally someone picked up my call and all she did was to ask me to visit their Care Center which is far away from where I am. This is ridiculous and I hope Apple should do something about this, not only to improve the accessories, but also to improve on customer service.

I'm still left in the blackhole without a replacement and cannot use my Macbook!!

i've had this computer and charger since January 2008, and the charger has never been thrown about or damaged by me or anyone else. But it's just gone faulty. I have to twist and turn it to register on my Macbook, and when it does, it doesn't charge. Apple, either sort it out or don't charge £58 for it. It's ridiculous.

    Unsatisfactory

    Written by SM from Puyallup

    Jul 14, 2009

I am a loyal Apple customer, but I must say that I am very disappointed with this product. I have had my MacBook for just over a year and half, and I just had to purchase my third power adapter. The first one briefly caught on fire at the base of the power block, and the second one somehow got a tear in the cord so I could no longer use it in fear of it also catching on fire. Not to mention, the main part of the power adapter often heats up to the point that it's too hot to touch. It's sad that such an amazing product has such poor accessories... The power adapter is definitely not worth the $79 price tag.

I love Apple but these things are horrible. Way to fragile, i've babied everything with this computer since day one. And for this thing to break my god. 80$ down the drain, seriously Apple you have got to fix these things. This is just way to much money to waste on junk like this, I expect way way more from you, very disappointed.

    Broken after 1 month

    Written by MM

    Jul 14, 2009

So I just got my Macbook Pro for college about a month ago. Everything has been going fine until this morning i discover when I took my charger out of my computer that the magnetic brick was stuck in my computer while i was holding both adapter and the cord connector in my hand. I sure hope this is under warranty because I can't spend $80 on a new one!

    Poor design not satisfied

    Written by JB from Ossian

    Jul 14, 2009

I love my mac however, the power cord is a piece of junk. I have had 2 replace it twice in the last year and a half. So that would be an extra $160.00 plus tax. Apple needs to come up with a better design for the plug that goes into the computer. It bends and becomes weak and then frays. I used to have a Dell and that cord design was much better. Come on Apple figure out a new design or I may have to rethink what my next laptop will be. The cost of replacing it just isn't economical. Find a new design or drop the price.

    easily broken!

    Written by KS

    Jul 13, 2009

My macbook is only 1 1/2 years old and I am already having to replace the charger. The magnet is a good idea in theory, but in use, its horrible. A lot of people have their charger break at the point where the cord meets the magnet. In my case, one of the spring loaded pins became worn out, and would not pop back up to make contact with the port on the computer. If Apple would just go basic and have a charger that plugs in like every other non-Apple computer does, there would be no problem. I would say don't buy this product, but since there is no way around having a charger, I would suggest buying a replacement from a different company. At least Apple would not get more of your money that way.

I have had my MacBook for 3 years. And I'm still using the same power cord. It is always plugged in and gets moved from room to room if needed. MacBook uses 60W transformer. I do NOT recommend using a larger one for it. And take care of the cord, it is a piece of electronics. From a Electrical Engineer

this charger makes your macbook worthless

    Written by EL from HELSINKI

    Jul 9, 2009

This charger is making me buy another laptop that is not apple. First charger went dead after 14 months. Guarantee is 12 months. New one i bought has gone dead 2 times and suddenly came back. Now its finally dead after 8 weeks of extra gentle use. Reseting SMC does nothing.
Its unbelievable that expensive mac laptops cant come up with a reliable charger. Add extra 79€ per year to your apple laptop budjet and be prepared to ask for a replacement regularly. If you are traveling never bring only 1 power adapter with you. Its unsafe. Always carry 2 magsafe power adapters - or look for another brand of laptop, as I´m doing.

    Burning,Pulling, low battery life.

    Written by RM from Portage

    Jul 6, 2009

I received my 13- Inch Macbook and 60W MagSafe Power Adapter this past December (about 6 months ago) and i thought that the cord pulling away from the magnetic part of my adapter was normal wear and tear, until i started reading reviews. I use my Macbook on a daily basis for hours a day and it's started to show that even while plugged in, my laptop won't have a full battery even while the light on the adapter is green. It also puzzled me when i would unplug it and it would only last for a couple hours at a time. The Block portion of my adapter gets so hot it burns me, especially when i am playing a game on my computer or watch a DVD. One thing that scares me is that my computer is only 6 months old, not even a year and it has these signs of damage. I also don't have $80 to replace it and i'm afraid that i'm going to have to wait until it causes real damage like a fire or something else. no way am i spending $80 on something that shouldn't be broken this quickly into owning it. i guess i should be thankful that it hasn't melted or completely lost all of its use as a power adapter. Apple needs to lower the price AND fix these problems ASAP or i'm sure there will be very many unhappy customers.
