Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Poor Product

I have read everyone's reviews, and I have to agree. The product is unsafe. The plastic started to burn, and of course now it does not work anymore.

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Melted.
Written by NN from Santa Monica
Aug 21, 2009
I loved having a power cord, and it's an ingenious idea to make it magnetic; however, my cord melted itself last night and now I only have 30% of my battery left.
It is a fire hazard in my opinion. It's been overheating my computer and only when it actually melted itself did I realize how hot it was getting. Wow.
I'm taking it into an Apple Store to get checked out. I love Apple products, but I'm sad that this one isn't working so well.14 of 15 people found this useful

DANGEROUS!!
Written by TM from london

apple should seriously reconsider using this type of charger. when i purchased my macbook this comes as standard and it seems i am just another customer whose charger has blown up/ melted. i am seriously let down and annoyed that because my apple care has ran out i now have to pay £60 for a new one even though this dangerous product melted when in my hands and caused injury.
this is the one thing that makes macbook a very bad decision for any future buyer.
i have rated this one star because i had to choose at least one i would give this a 0.15 of 19 people found this useful

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Lasted almost 3 years
Written by MG from Broadview Heights

The charger for my MacBook is finally burning up after almost 3 years. I say finally burning up because it is always VERY HOT! I am not complaining because it did last 3 years but it is extremely pricey to purchase a new one. I do have to say that I travel a lot and the power cord is always being used and put away several times a day. Overall I think the product has been quite durable as I do not always store it the way it should be stored.

I got my charger four months ago and one day it just stopped working. In a closer inspection I noticed that the wires had pulled out of the head of the charger. I had been treating my charger quite well. I am extremely disappointed.

i love the mac book! i just hate the cord! the plastic started melting and got EXTREMELY hot... it made my battery hot, too! the wires are now all exposed and the plastic melted almost all around already within an hour. this is where you attach it to your computer... horrible! i called the store to see if there is any recall, what a fire hazard and she said unless i have apple care, they will not replace it. there needs to be a recall for this... it's a fire hazard!

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
flimsy, expensive to replace
Written by JN from Langhorne
Aug 15, 2009
the power adapter that came with my unibody macbook is quite simply the most poorly made apple product i have experienced yet. after a mere four months of owning my macbook, the power cord decided to stop working. the only way i could get it to work was if i pushed VERY hard against the section where it met the computer. luckily, the genius at my local apple store gave me a replacement for free. mine had no visible defects, so i think i'm lucky. however, i could easily see wires becoming exposed, and apple really needs to review their adapters' integrity. i'd rather have a clunky, dell-like adapter that WORKS and doesn't BREAK and BEND after four months than another pretty, communist-white apple product that is inferior. also, $80 for a new one? no thanks.

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Fire Hazard
Written by RF from Nokesville
Aug 12, 2009
It's unfortunate that there's no lower rating than one star. I'd heard rumors of these adapters catching themselves on fire, but I always attributed that to poor care by customers.
Two nights ago, the 60W MagSafe adapter for a first gen MacBook I own began to smoke. The cable shielding just outside of the reinforced section attached to the power brick had melted, showing bare and singed wire beneath. While this adapter isn't new, it has been well cared for. Furthermore, most reports I've read indicate that these tend to burn up on the MagSafe connector end. This is the first time I've seen one burn through at the brick. I'm lucky, as is everyone else in my house, that this happened while the MacBook was in use. If this had happened during a bathroom break, this could have led to a house fire.
It's unfortunate that a product I love so much comes with an adapter that, from what I've been reading online today, has a long history of fire incidents. In the future, I am going to have to remember to unplug all of my Apple notebooks whenever I leave them unattended, no matter how quickly I plan to get back to them.

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
great idea let down by reliability
Written by TL from STEYNING
Aug 10, 2009
Now moving onto my 4th one. If I could give it '0' stars I would. Tips: 1. Applecare has now paid for itself in new Magsafes alone - so that's good value!. 2 Buy one as a spare to use while you're waiting for a new one in the post.
To be honest though, it'd be easier if I could just drop in to the Apple shop and swap whenever it breaks. They should be in a bin marked 'please take one'. OR they should send you two in the post. Summary: Absolute junk that lets down the otherwise brilliant macbook.17 of 19 people found this useful

I like this charger very much, as a "switcher" the chargers of PC´s was a thing that really annoyed me, they are always big bulky and darnded ugly!
This one is practical, small, and stylish, the extension cord option is also nice.
The build quality may not be the best, i´m thinking of the cable it self, it seems like it is very thin, the organizing sytem could also do damage to the cables after numerous times of packing and unpacking it.7 of 10 people found this useful

Oh my god, what a money sucking hunk of...

Alright, well I have had the pleasure of owning two of these wonderful devices and I have to say that I am thoroughly dissatisfied. For what I think is a rather high price, these chargers seem utterly unreliable. They keep overheating where the charger meets the mac book and breaking down. Apple seriously needs to come up with a solution to this problem. Now my battery is at 39% capacity and I guess that'll have to last me till a new charger comes in the mail. No doubt I'm going to look for a more reliable product on the website.

I as well have experienced the MagSafe adapter failure. My adapter overheated and then it stopped working. It no longer charges my laptop.. I wonder if there is a recall of this piece?

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Very weak connection to magnetic piece and wires easily fray. Too expensive
Written by CC from SAINT PAUL
Aug 6, 2009
I received a Macbook via my school, and I've had it for less that a year. Already the charger has stopped working. I noticed a while ago that the area where the wires meet the magnetic piece that plugs into the computer started fraying and falling apart. This angers me because now my laptop's battery is dead and I am not able to charge it. Eighty dollars is a lot of money for a brand new charger when the original charger should be made a bit sturdier. Other people I know who have the same type of charger have also had this problem. Spending eighty dollars on this product should not be a necessity right now.

I'm lucky so far
Written by JS from Southaven

I have read all of the reviews on this site about the power adapters for the MacBook Pro, MacBook, and MacBook Air. I was very surprised to discover how unhappy people were with them. Mine has always worked well for me. However, (and I say this in the nicest way possible) the thing isn't an armored vehicle or anything. You have to treat it like what it is: an expensive, delicate piece of equipment, because that's what it is.
The real thing i wanted to say here though was that whoever it was that posted how you could use the 85W adapter for Macbook Pro on the MacBook is wrong. You would burn up the battery after an extended period of time and possibly a few other components associated with the power system as well.15 of 21 people found this useful

DO NOT LISTEN!
Written by TO from San Leandro

The guy who told you to get the 85w power cord for a MacBook that clearly needs a 60w cord is a idiot. If you do that you could hurt zap you MacBook. Use the cord that apple designed for you laptop. Besides, if you use them correctly they should not brake for years to come. If a school can use these cords and not brake them you can too.

I've used it solidly for 3 years and it is still perfect. Don't believe every review here, my one has never shown any issues. The design is brilliant, takes up no space in a bag with the thin cable. The charger has been one of the most impressive pieces of my Macbook's hardware.

No Problems with 60W Power Adapter
Written by TW from Bellevue

After reading some of the reviews on the 60W MagSafe Power Adapter, I am surprised and should consider myself lucky. I've had mine since September of 2006 and have not had any problems or issues with it. I do have to replace it now only because my puppy chewed it - that is my own fault for leaving it within her reach :o)

Another broken power adapter
Written by JC from WARWICK
Aug 3, 2009
At least mine lasted nearly 2 years before if failed to work! Problem is, without it the Macbook is useless. I've had to revert to my old trusted PC for the time being. Surely a company such as Apple can produce an adapter that last for a good number of years? Then again at £60 for a replacement, probably not.
