poor image on most external monitors

Attempted to use with school multimedia projectors and several models of monitors. Mind you all of the projectors and monitors work great with the vga cable and our various PCs as well as the old model (white) macbook pro. Purchased the dongle for the newer (aluminum) macbook pro and get an absolutely awful picture. All have such a terrible flicker you can see the waves on the screens and especially along the edges. Even students who rarely pay much attention noted the wavy resolution and asked what was wrong with the projector. Tried everything from 60Hz to 95Hz -- same result and get an "out of range" for most rates. One monitor cannot even hold the image for more than 7 minutes without blacking out and resetting. I also had to purchase two adapters before getting the proper size as the packaging did not indicate compatibility issues. Have tried repeatedly to get an honest list from Apple of monitors that will work. No success. Have taken the computer to the store - claim computer is fine -- leaves the adapter since the monitors work with other computers.

I bought three of these for school iMacs. We have intel core duo machines. They're too big!

Not enough information in the specifics for the correct part to be ordered. Being a school returns are not easy so getting it right the first time is essential. At $17 each you better believe we're returning them.

    Doesn't work with 10.8.2

This adapter works great with my MBP that is a year old, but just bought a new solid state drive MBP and suddenly I can't use my giant monitor with it :( Old MBP can use this adapter with lots of different monitors, but no monitor works with the new MBP. 10.8.1 didn't work either. Before you say it, it isn't the local port either because my HDMI adapter works fine in the port.

    Didn't work with my macbook

it clearly says in the description that this product works with a normal macbook, however did not work with mine. Make sure you are cautious when buying this product. I am so tired of apple doing things like this to make money. They should specify what model of "macbook" it works with. Very Unhappy

    Works great, but poor connection.

I use this often to connect my MacBook to my other monitor. The product works great and I've never had a problem getting it to display everything properly on my other monitor. However, the connection from the "Mini DVI to VGA Adapter" to my MacBooks Mini DVI port is very poor (it's a loose connection)...it can easily be knocked or pulled out. I just wish Apple would have made the connection more solid, other than that it works great.

    Keeps falling out

The adapter falls out of my macbook port at the slightest move! I can hardly work because the monitor keeps loosing the connection (twice already since I started writing this review), and it takes about 3-4 seconds to reconnect each time.

Way too expensive. It is bad enough having to constantly pay for new adaptors with every new Mac (just another tax) but not 4 times the going rate thank you.

at the start there were no problems, now my screen looks like a shortwave radio signal and this only happens on Mac OSX. It does not do it on the Windows partition on the same computer

    Does fit older iMacs

Other reviews saying this cable doesn't work with Intel Core 2 Duo iMacs are incorrect. It certainly does fit if your Mac has a Mini-DVI port - check the documentation. However you may still experience problems. As reported in other Forums, you may find that your iMac detects the external monitor but you have problems getting a signal. After reconnecting the VGA end I did get a signal for a minute or two then lost it again. However I don't believe it's a problem with the adapter.

Honestly how hard should it be to order a cable to go from mac to a VGA! Im on my 3rd 312 each time had to re-post back to supplier. Each description on the suppliers site said mini DV to VGA but there are at least three different types. Please Apple somethings you do make me wonder where the genius goes sometimes. get someone in to get your supply chain sorted.

WARNING - Does not fit iMac Core 2 Duo

    • Written by from Beaconsfield

Like another reviewer mentioned, Apple do need to make buying cables for older products more accurate. This item states 'designed for the iMac (Intel Core Duo)' so I bought it.

I have an Intel Core 2 Duo late 2009 iMac and didn't spot that the wording was 'Core Duo' and not Core 2 Duo'. It doesn't fit.

It is ridiculous that you have to click on each cable to see what it fits - this cable is the only one I could see that mentioned Core and Duo which is why I bought it. Now have to put it on eBay...

Bought this to use in my classroom along side my 13 inch MacBook. Works great hooked up to my projector or my monitor. I knew exactly what it could and couldn't do before I bought it. If you're looking to transfer picture, this is what you need but don't complain when it doesn't transfer sound, that's NOT what it's made for. MADE FOR VISUAL TRANSFER ONLY!
    Hope this helps. :)

Mac cables and connectors are definitely the "weak link" for Apple, and this is no exception. My Mini DVI/VGA adapter lasted about half a year with very occasional use, mostly at my office desk. Wires became loose, and VGA screen started shifting colors then not connecting at all. Apple should be able to do better, especially at these inflated prices.

    Apple Quality - ???

    • Written by

40 of 52 people found this useful

I bought this adapter shortly after purchasing my MacBook - after rarely using it for less than 2 years the product is finished - it shorts out, causing the monitor or projector to flash or not show certain colors.
The fact that this adapter has to be purchased to essentially make the Mac useful with anything VGA is an annoyance in itself - what a money grab!
And then to have it built so poorly that, after 18 months it needs replacement, is a real irritation.
This is my first Mac and, if the poor quality of the computer and adapter is any indication, it will also be my last.
    Talk about overpriced trash!

WARNING Does NOT fit the Thunderbolt Port

    • Written by from Los Angeles

Apple have not quite yet got to grips with their new Thunderbolt Ports on the 2011 MacBooks. So be warned - the Apple Mini DVI end of this little adaptor WILL NOT FIT into the NEW THUNDERBOLT PORT - Apparently the adapter you need is the MINI-DISPLAY port to VGA.

Apple are sending me out a FREE replacement - Great customer Service - When Apple gets it wrong, they take it on the chin.

At some time in the future, there will probably be an adapter from the Thunderbolt to a hub which has all sorts of female sockets for DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI or VGA and also Firewire, USB and Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel. At the moment, although the port appears to be able to handle multiple inputs, the available adapters limit you to using one at a time. However, as few at Apple seem to know exactly what does fit with the Thunderbolt, it may be that actually the port can only ever be dedicated to one use at a time.... we will see...

    Mini-dvi to vga adapter

The adapters work great - for a while. Then they need to be replaced. I work in a school where every classroom has a presentation system, so these adapters are constantly in use. I wish apple would not change the adapter port with each new incarnation of their ibooks, macbooks, etc. It creates havoc for those of us who manage a large inventory of machines and parts. (The battery connectors change as well.)
I have found that with a lot of use, these connectors need to be replaced at least annually, and sometimes even more frequently.
