Does apple remote work with headphones?

When using headphones plugged into the headphone jack instead of the other port for an ipod touch (whatever its called), will the apple remote still work to change songs?

do you have to have it docked in order or it to work or can you just use it while its in your pocket I have an ipod touch

I just want to know if you can use this and leave you ipod touch in your pocket?

Will this remote work on any universal dock or just newer ones?

I have an older universal iPod dock, just one of those little all white ones, and it has an IR sensor on it, but will this remote still work with it? I wasn't sure if this remote would work or not, I don't want to waste my money on it if it only works with newer model docks.

Do you have to have a Mac computer to use the remote?

I wanted to get the Apple Remote for my boyfriend as a Christmas gift. He has an iHome, an iPod, and an iPhone, but he does not have a Mac computer. Will the remote work on the apple devices he has if he does not have a Mac?
