will this work with a sonnet thunderbolt expansion chassis?
I am thinking of a portable workstation controlled by my thunderbolt equipped macbook air, and was wondering if matching this with a RED Rocket card in a Sonnet Echo Express Pro Thunderbolt Expansion Chassis would be of help with graphics rendering.

No. As clearly stated in Sonnet's product specs, the expansion chassis you mention accepts 7.75" long cards maximum. This graphics card is far too long to physically fit. Furthermore, this card alone requires a MINIMUM of 150 watts. As this is the total available power for the expansion chassis, even if it fit, you would not have enough power for another expansion card.

Sonnet doesn't currently list any video cards as being compatible with the drivers they provide for the Echo Express Pro. If drivers wouldn't be an issue, the Pro chassis will house one double-wide, full-length card such as the 5770/5870 (with no room remaining for a second card), but the chassis probably doesn't provide the auxiliary power cable required by the card.

Hi, the Red Rocket card is only useful for the rendering of R3D Files(The Red Camera's RAW Format) it offers no extra rendering speed for anything else. Also the Red Rocket card is only a debayer card for R3D's and the CPU power is as essential for the rendering of these files. I would not suggest a Macbook Air, as the RAM and CPU spec are too low to offer any great rendering speeds. Also the Red Rocket only works the Pro Chassis (Full length version) it DOES NOT require any external power as it is NOT a graphics card. If you are looking to add an external graphics card, thunderbolt is the wrong choice. Buy a Mac Pro.
