Answer
I purchased a 'Proxima Direct® PC VGA to TV Composite Video RGB Converter / TV AV RCA S-Video Adapter Converter Box' from Amazon and that solved the problem nicely, the cost being only £12 (Apple take note!). This works very nicely -- it is powered by means of a USB socket and quite a range of leads is supplied so you don't have to go and buy additional leads to connect up (assuming you already have the VGA adapter). There is a menu button that permits various adjustments to the picture.
