do we have to have a cable service provider to use Apple TV?
We just got a new HD TV. Do we need Direct TV hooked up to get color/HD picture with Apple TV? In other words, does Apple TV replace the Direct TV receiver?

No, your AppleTV is a complimentary device and do not replace your existing service. Apple provides additional media content through the iTunes store that can be accessed from your AppleTV.
