    Follow the Directions

I have two of these batteries and they provide power for three to four hours each. Performance and life are achieved by following the instructions in the Help section. Calibrate the battey once a month per the instructions, and don't leave it plugged in all the time. If you constantly use the power cord, remove the battery so it doesn't over charge. If you do these two things you'll get long life. More

Same battery problem - Not a bad solution!

After nine months of constantly using my MacBook Pro 17, the system recently started to shut down unexpectedly, Now the battery casing is expanding and buckling and will not hold a charge. The effective life cycle with other rechargeable battery systems I have used seems to be about the same.

I was concerned about additional damage or safety hazard so I removed the battery. I called Apple Support and they agreed without dispute to send a replacement under warranty at no charge. Apple is still the best overall computer experience I have had!

    Tops!

Apple has engineered a great battery for the 17" MacBook Pro. It keeps chugging for 3.5 to 4 hours and greatly outpaces my old G4 15" Powerbook battery with double the operating time. I'm very impressed. Good work Apple!

Note: If anyone isn't getting fabulous operating time, or is experiencing battery warpage or overheating, take your notebook into the Apple store and get a new battery. If you're within warranty it should be free, or if out of warranty, $129 is a small price to pay for the power this little beast puts out.

    Macbook Pro Battery..

After almost 2.5 years my MBP 17" Battery pulled the expanding balloon trick, eventually killing the trackpad.. I of course thought it was the trackpad until the battery expanded in the other direction.. and when the Macbook is a rockin.. well I wasn't knocking on wood.

The cool thing was after going setting up an appointment at the Emeryville Apple store, they replaced it immediately no questions asked even though my mac was wayyyy out of warranty. Cheers Apple.

    exploding battery

I bought a used MacBook Pro and the seller said that he'd replaced the battery recently. After about 6 months of use, everything shut down. Took it to a repair shop, and found that the battery had bulged out and was no longer flat. The batter was removed and stored in a plastic bag. By the time I got home, the battery had swelled to the point of coming apart. Will Apple replace this battery? More

The end of its natural life - over 2 years old and 444 cycles!

    Written by JF from Wakefield

    Nov 6, 2009

It's like anything in this life, if you look after it properly (as per the Apple's recommendations, and bearing manufacturing faults), it SHOULD last as long as mine has. I'm freelance and use my Macbook Pro 17" very regularly, taking care to discharge it fully as often as possible. It has currently done 444 cycles and it is only just beginning to cause me problems - cutting out at around 40% charge. This is to be expected as it IS a consumable item and has a finite life. Considering what it has to do, not a bad life either. If you are getting significantly less service from yours, it's either a dud (and you should expect a replacement) or you may need to give it a little more TLC. More

As I recently found out, yes indeed it does. I have been leaving my MBP power adapter/charger cord connected for extended periods of time, and just last week when going through the new system pref's of Snow Leopard I say a triangle with an ! inside it in the energy saver/ battery pref's. I asked a friend that works at the local Apple store about it, and his words were "Dude, you killed your battery". I now get at most an hour before the battery low warning pops up.

And all along I have been doing the battery cycling on a monthly basis.

  • is this the A1175?

The 1175 fit the 15", so select the 15" size for the newer MA458LL/A and you'll be good. And be sure to download the battery firmware updates for your particular laptop model, if you haven't. You can do that before you install the new battery. I'd add the links to the pages here on apple's support sites that discusses those updates but apple won't let me do that within these answers. Just google "EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs" and you'll find them. More

"Your one-year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. You can extend your replacement coverage for a defective battery to three years from the date of your notebook purchase with the AppleCare Protection Plan. However, the AppleCare Protection Plan for notebook computers does not cover batteries that have failed or are exhibiting diminished capacity except when the failure or diminished capacity is the result of a manufacturing defect. Apple offers a battery replacement service for MacBook Air and all MacBook Pro notebooks with built-in batteries. You can purchase replacement batteries for late models of Apple notebooks directly from the Apple Store." More
