It uses an IR (Infrared) signal to transmit information. You need a IR Receiver on your computer, or universal dock to use this remote.

Infrared. Therefore only controls Macs that have an infrared receiver. Check the specs - as an example, the new Macbook ($999) does not.

To remain backwards compatible, the new remote continues to use high-power infra-red. High-power IR allows you to use the remote even when not in direct line-of-sight as the signal is capable of reflecting off surrounding surfaces. You can see the IR transmitter at the top on the 3/4 view image.

It uses infrared (IR), like the old white Apple Remote. This means the remote needs line of sight to whatever you're controlling.

IR. The requirements state you need a Mac with an IR receiver, or the Universal Dock, which only has IR.

The Apple Remote uses Infrared signals, as did the previous model Apple Remote. Because of this the remote will only work with Macs built after 2005, because the earlier Macs do not have infrared receivers, and universal iPod docks, which also have infrared receivers.
