Connect your DSL or cable modem to Time Capsule, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is included for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos and more — without wires.4
Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.
For maximum range and compatibility, Time Capsule works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. It uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology, so you can enjoy up to five times the Wi-Fi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks.4 And improvements in antenna design give you up to 50 percent better performance and up to 25 per cent better range than with the previous-generation Time Capsule.5
Guest networking.
Set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers and attached hard drives.
Wireless drive sharing.
Time Capsule also works great as a wireless hard drive, whether you have a Mac or a PC. It sets up in a snap, giving you a networked hard drive you can use for storing and sharing all kinds of files. Anybody looking to buy this product, be warned as you will only get approx. 18month lifetime and no way of getting your data back when it fails.

I loved the function, wireless ease of use and simplicity, at least when it worked. Alas, mine died after approximately 18 months of service. Not what I'd consider acceptable for something you'd expect to be heavy-duty since it's advertised as having a "server-grade" hard drive.

I used it as an external drive I had LOTS OF INFO in it and it quit working. i LOST EVERYYHING. If the internal drive crashes there is no way of fixing it …More

I've had the 1TB TC for well over a year now and never had any problems with either the speed at which it backs up or the hard-drive failing. I know you probably are paying a little more than what you would for a separate wireless router and external harddrive, but I feel like what Apple is offering here, in my option, is a fantastic product.
Little suggestion for those complaining about the initial backup speed, hard wire it for the first backup and then go wireless for increment backups. I let it run overnight so I don't know exactly how long it took but it was done by the time I got up.
Also makes for a great wireless music storage device. I keep all my iTunes music loaded on the drive and whenever I'm connected to it my iTunes in synced up. …More17 of 18 people found this useful

I have owned my Time Capsule for about 6 months now with now problems. It backs up my computer regularly (yes the first backup did take 24 hours but it was 200gb large, come on people, that is a huge amount to backup). My Time Capsule just died, and there is no way to recover the data. I had a lot of data that I thought were backed up, now lost forever. I cannot believe the gross oversight. Isn't the whole point to make back up is to preserve data? I guess they forgot the 2nd part. What a joke!!! …More

If you are using the Time Capsule with a computer that's covered under AppleCare, the Time Capsule is covered. Note that they do NOT have to be on the same receipt. From the AppleCare Protection Plan terms & conditions:
"An AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, an Apple-branded DVI to ADC display adapter, Apple RAM modules and MacBook Air SuperDrive are also covered under APP if owned by you and used with the Covered Equipment."
Also, from Apple's page advertising the plan:
"An AirPort Extreme Card, AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, MacBook Air SuperDrive, and Apple RAM when used with a Mac covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan"
Note that I (and others) have verified this in practice - I am getting my dead 18-month old Time Capsule replaced under the APP on my MacBook pro. …More- Answered by RG from Portland

The new 1TB and 2TB Time Capsules might have a different brand of hard drive or if not, they might have a better more reliable hard drive. The new Time Capsules were released April of 2009; so no one can say that" My 2TB Time Capsule died after 18 months!" I do not know if Apple has changed the hard drive or not; I would think they would try to do something about the two star rating for this product! …More

So can this replace my wireless modem to allow my Internet and printers to be used on a wireless home network? I'm on a 24" iMac.

It will replace the wireless part, but you will still need a modem for your cable or DSL. Many DSL modems have it's own router built in, this moves your Apple router one step away from the actual internet. This disables certain features that require a direct connection to the internet such as Back to my Mac.
If you do have two routers you will get a Double NAT error in Airport Utility and a flashing amber light on the Apple router. If your internet provider can't help you turn off the router in your modem they may be able to replace the router/modem they sent you with just a modem. I had to explain what I was trying to do to get them to replace it. If they can't replace it and you want to, or have to, stay with this provider you can set the Apple product to Bridge Mode where you're passed through directly to your ISP's router so services like iChat can connect to the destination directly. …More- Answered by RS from Alameda
