you've got to be kidding me... really?
ok so the thing works as intended. i have no real issues with the functionality. every iPod that you can buy now comes with an ada pter for the universal dock that fits the iPod you bought. if you break it or lose it, they expect you to shell out $9.00 for a brand new "Universal Dock Adapter 3-Pack for iPod touch" AKA "A CHEAP PIECE OF PLASTIC!!".

Wonderful
These sturdy dock adapters blew my mind. Even after repeated attempts to break, crack, or otherwise deform these fine polycarbona te marvels, they stayed as solid as a rock. This is a must buy for any iPod fan. …

confused
Shouldn't a "Universal Dock" work with all ipods ... as the name implies - Universal! Why should one have to buy an adapter for an ipod touch? "these parts are interchangable ... but you'll need to buy an extra adapter." ? …

Thanks to design uniformity
I owned an iPod Video 5G 60gb with a universal dock. The iPod "dissapeared" on my last trip. "A person can only survive for a few days without an Ipod". I bought the 16Gb Ipod touch and, thank you Apple: dock, cables and iTunes are all compatible with the new technology wonder... …

Visit the Apple Knowledge Base Article number HT1380 titled, "Learn about Apple Universal Dock"
I t shows the Adapter Number for all iPods.
The iPhones have Adapters Numbers 12 and 15; and
The touches have Adapters Numbers 14 and 16. (It doesn't mention the 3rd generation touches so apparently they use Adapter Number 16....same as the 2nd generation touches.)
I hope this helps you out. …- Answered by Avron Al G from Grants Pass

Hi MD:
If your Apple iPod touch has a volume control on its side, then it's a 2nd generation touc h; else it's a 1st generation touch. (There was no Late 2009 or 3nd gen iPod touch with 16GB of memory.)
Both devices use different iPod Adapters....the 1st gen uses no. 14 and the 2nd gen uses no. 16.
Read the Apple Knowledge Base Article No. HT 1380 titled, "Learn about Apple Universal Dock"....as it lists all the iPod Adapter Numbers.
