these speakers. where to start. they are so easy to set up, took less that 3 minutes including unboxing! the clever usb connection really improves sound quality, bass is outstanding, treble and midrange are clear and precise. however they dont fill a pretty big room well at all, really only meant for use when you are less than 2 metres from them. these are certainely worth the moeny, yes its a lot but they really do deliver! cant believe the bass, reassuring weight, build quality and easy of use. even the remote is well made, nice touch.

The best I've ever heard ...

    • Written by from Glasgow

Using a pair of these linked to iTunes, and I can honestly call them amazing, providing a great "stage", with a clear treble and solid punchy bass. How they do that in such a small speaker with no separate sub is beyond me....

I got these yesterday and I am amazed, they are just fantastic. A whole new dimension in the music has opened up for me. Yes they are very expensive, but what a fantastic sound ! If I knew that I would have bought them a year ago.

    Not Disappointed

I bought the Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 speakers based purely upon the other reviews and haven't been disappointed. Although expensive, having listened to music using other desktop speaker systems in the past, I now realise that I haven't been listening to the music at all, just a limited muddied representation. If anything, the MM-1s took a little getting used to, due to the additional 'sounds' in otherwise familiar tracks. The only downside was the largely unavoidable and relatively minimal cable clutter, which is primarily limited to the right hand speaker and instantly forgotten when listening to the music.

After many months of indecision, I finally took the plunge and bought these for my iMac; months that I look back on and wonder why I hesitated. The sound that emanates from these unassuming-looking speakers is quite breathtaking. Having the volume level set to around 60% on my iMac is enough to fill the room with gorgeous sound.

They have a rich sound that really adds an extra dimension to everything that is piped through them. Voices sound like the person is in the room with you, the fine details of music of all genres is brought to the fore, and the bass is thumpy but not overpowering.

Definitely make sure to connect via USB rather than the audio jack of your computer to make use of the expert sound processing contained within, as other reviews have pointed out. When you change the volume, you can hear the effect of the sound processing altering the balance of the sound to best suit the volume. And the sound is so much the better for it.

The right speaker does get rather hot on top due to all the electronics being contained within, but I have not experienced any problems with overheating.

£400 is not an insignificant sum to spend on computer speakers by any means, but you can trust these to keep you planted firmly in front of your computer a lot more than before.

    Like Music Buy these!

Nearly all that needs to be said about theses speakers has been covered by all the other reviewers but would like to add that after nearly a year of ownership not a day goes by that i'am not grateful that B&W made these these speakers. Iam replacing MP3 with lossless to get the best from them. TIP try playing your HD tracks using Decibel.. to my ears there is an audible improvement (over iTunes),the bass is richer and the sound a tad more open.

Clear sound with a special soul

    • Written by from Oberndorf in Tirol

Well, I got the MM-1's more than a year ago, so I really heard everything with them. To make it short: They sound great with good files (256 kbit/s AAC or better) and they tend to give your music a special sound - something I like to call the soul of the speakers. To me, the warm but serious sound of the MM-1 is just perfect. But other might prefer the clinical (not purely negative meant) sound of the Bose SoundDock 10 or the punchier sound of some comparable 2.0 speakers, which lack a bit of the clarity.

To me, they're perfect. To someone else, something else will be perfect. But they're well worth the money if you like there sound - so listen to them before you buy.

Awesome speakers, nothing to fault after 6 months.
One precaution is the in-built compressor to protect the speakers; sounds harsh but is there for a reason..

My Bose Companion 5's have just been relegated to the pages of Ebay after purchasing a set of these. There really is no comparison.
Sound quality is so clear and vibrant it really is music to the ears. Just cannot praise these speakers enough.

    Stunning Speakers

    • Written by from glossop

Bought these to replace my expensive B&W hifi speakers as mi play music from my Mac now. Got these speakers out of the box, plugged them in and was seriously unimpressed. Scrathed my head a little then i read a review on here that mentioned making sure that you change the settings on your Mac from internal to MM1. I did this and was instantly floored by the sound emanating from these beautiful little speakers; truly beautiful revealing Hifi sound. Don't hesitate!

    Absolutely amazing!!!

    • Written by from Tonbridge

These computer speakers are absolutely amazing! Just simply unbeatable in terms of audio quality, the best set of speakers I have ever had!

    - Impeccable sound quality
    - The lead length is also relatively good too, not to long and not too short
    - Both USB and standard 3.5mm audio jack input
    - Small form factor, they hardly take up an entire desk like many others I've seen
    - The headphones port on the back truly does improve the sound quality as advertised!

    - The right speaker can get a little hot but I have not seen that affect their performance on little bit
    - They are not very room filling and only sound at their best a few feet away from you (but they are designed for that though)
    - They aren't exactly cheap at £405, but they are well and truly worth it!

    Not worth the money.

    • Written by from edinburgh

See i was in two minds when i got mine, and i think i've decided to send them back. I couldn't wait to get them hooked up, as you'd think after spending £400 you would have some serious sounding speakers with amazing sound. Unfortunately if your like me and play most of your music from itunes, then you'll probably not be too impressed as the sound really isn't that great, or that loud. I tried to compare the difference to a sony dock i bought, and honestly there wasn't that much in it!

they look amazing, and i know they are designed for close range, yet I would say they're not that impressive for people who buy and play of itunes. I would try before you buy elsewhere.

This is my third computer speaker, frist set is JBL Creature 2.1(bad), second one is AEGO M 2.1(good for the price), now the MM-1 beats those two sets totally, high and controlled bass are excellent with USB onboard DAC. It is really good to use with iTunes!

    Unparalleled Audio Quality

    • Written by from Leicester

First of all I would like to say that it is only worth spending £400 on a pair of pc speakers if you listen to music at high bit-rate (320kbps +) or lossless, listening to low bit-rate recordings just wouldn't do these speakers justice. That's because the quality of the mm-1s are so high that they make low bit-rate recordings sound worse.

Now for the audio quality - If like me you have a large music collection with mostly high bit-rate recordings and a few lossless albums, you are in for a real treat, pc audio has never had it so good. When I first listened to my favourite songs on these speakers it was like listening to them for the first time! You can hear the instruments individually in an extremely wide dynamic range. Bass is punchy and tight. Trust me you will hear elements in a song that you've never heard before. I bought the P5 headphones back in august and was expecting these speakers to sound just as good, but they have blown me away and sound even better. The sound coming out of these speakers defies belief considering how small they are! They go as loud as say a Sony micro hi-fi system. I am so blown away by the audio quality that I am now re-ripping all of my audio CDs in lossless format.

Watching movies and playing games, sound is very clean, especially spoken speech. Obviously due to the lack of a full size sub you will not get the ultimate movie or game experience, but the sound quality is so high that it is still highly enjoyable.

These speakers are also very sexy and sophisticated looking, going for the same look as the Zeppelin iPod speaker range, black cloth with beautifully brushed aluminium and chrome.

Go on! Treat yourself to the Bowers & Wilkins mm-1 pc speakers! These are the greatest dedicated PC speakers ever made! YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPPOINTED!!!

I was concerned at the lack of a separate sub-woofer, was originally going for the Bose Companion 5.

My concerns were unfounded - while you obviously don't get the same thumping bass you would with a sepaqrate sub, the range and clarity of these speakers is such that you'll be wondering why you wanted thumping bass int he first place. Thats not to say these speakers don't have a good level of bass, far from it, they provide the exact amount of low end, creating the best sound I've ever heard from desktop speakers.

I was previously not what you would call an Audiophile, but I'm now going to be fitting these around my home coupled with AirPort Expresses and separate DACs.

Prepare to be amazed (and also obsessed with converting your library to a lossless format.

    Unbelievable sound, best in class

    • Written by from Bridgwater

I just hooked them up to my new MacBook Pro and can't believe my ears.

Crisp, natural sound, which is convincing and undistorted. Similar quality to the (very) expensive Keff speakers I use with my home cinema and a fuller, more rounded bass than my Harman Kardon or Bose iPod docks.

Great at volume, they fill a room without distortion and I'm considering using them for a New Year party they are that good.

Without any doubt whatsoever the best computer or iPod speakers I have ever bought - best in class by a very long way -

go on, treat yourself, you won't regret it!
