One of the best purchases I've ever made - Zeppelin Air Speakers

    • Written by from Bromley

The sound is just not comparable. Rich, round, smooth and velvety, with good base. Everyone comments on how good it sounds.

We had it in the garden (large garden) for a summer party and the volume was sufficient enough to not be lost at all and quite honestly we could even have made it louder if we wished.

Yes, it could take a short while to set up if you have an old system (and if you're not a techie like me), but the results are just superb.

Initially I didn't consider this item as I saw it on the Gadget Show and thought it to be just the newest in pretentious gadgets, especially the shape. How wrong was I! The chap, may have been Greg at the Covent Garden Store, insisted that I listen to my own music on the Zepplin (and then others) and not look at the shape. Done and dusted and haven't looked back. Guess what, the shape has even grown on me too.

This is an excellent product and something has to be said for Apple Services too.

    Poor sound & poor functionality

    • Written by from BRISTOL

This worked OK for about 6 months then after a software update it decided to lose connection (no change to my wifi setup), I ended up resetting the Zep Air a couple times a week, in the end I contacted B&W support and when they finally responded, they denied any issues and told me to get an apple airport base station, like a mug I did and guess what - no change! Overall I would say that it is somewhat outdated as the Airplay works better with a 3GS than a 4S and now with the 5 the dock is useless. Sound quality is below average, boxy and shut in compared with other Airplay systems. I would not touch this or any B&W product again.

If the signal is lost, the Zeppelin is a horror

    • Written by from den bosch

For one and a half year I've been trying to get my Zeppelin to function, with the help of B&W. The last time I had a visit from a great guy from B&W, but to no end. Every half hour, the Zeppelin loses the signal several times and sound falls away, and comes back 1-5 seconds later.

Is it Apple Airport? I've no problem at all with reception of Spotify, streaming video etc. on my computers. So it must be the signal for Airplay. But the problem arises with an iPhone, MacBook and iMac alike. Old, new, all the same.

B&W now tells me to go back to the (Apple) store where I bought it. There they will tell me it functions just fine. It's a network/airplay/Zeppelin problem and i'm in a feedback loop.

Expensive gadget, 600 euro, no help. Good luck with that.

    Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin

    • Written by from BRIGHTON

I am currently on my 8th pair of zeppelins due to them breaking. The dock is extremely poor and if you press down too hard it simply breaks straight away.
I also have trouble getting any noise out of my ipod/iphone because the volume button disapears.

however these speaks are outstanding when they do work, just with me they tend to not work 90% of the time

    Hear and you'll see

    • Written by from Romford

Let's get something out of the way

If following the instructions correctly, you can install the AirPlay function in less than 10 minutes. The only impediment for some is the (required) USB A to B cable which I happened to have, but does not come in the box.

The speakers' sound quality is outstanding. I've read some complaints about overpowering bass in some reviews - this is not an issue with the dock but rather the final editing of the tracks. Examples of music like certain mainstream rap/hip-hop songs are produced to be available to the average consumer and not for fine-tuned hardware, hence why they sound so distorted and the bass overpowers the rest of the song on a capable hi-fi system such as this one.

70% of my library is composed of house music, 20% classical and the rest is a mixture. All, especially house music sound impeccable. The treble is well balanced and the bass is profound and overall, the Zeppelin effectively projects music in my entire generously-sized room with no problem. Classical music is well executed with no loose ends and high pitched notes comfortably play at a satisfying frequency.

Is the price-tag worth it? Well it depends. If you're prepared to spend significantly more for a high quality dock, don't think twice about it.

Awesome speaker you won't regret buying

    • Written by from Reading

I'll come clean it's awesome. You won't regret buying it. Great sound, phallic design and won't disappoint you musically. I'd go so far to say that it could even make X-Factore contestants sound an improved dreadful rather than their current level of musical genocide - I know, that would be a miracle, well it's that good!

'Hear and you'll see'...they were right.

    • Written by from Newcastle Upon Tyne

Had been looking around for a new iPod dock for sometime so I ventured to my local apple store and after previous shopping around i picked up this mammoth! Weighing in at just under a stone; it is a beast.

Aesthetically it is stunning, like nothing else, shopping around you can see other companies have tried to channel the Zeppelin's looks but nothing matches in my opinion!

Now for sound, the first play I was hesitant, anyone would be since it has to live up to the £500 price tag and boy...did it not! Highs are precise without any noticeable sibilance, the treble sparkles and that bass, oh my, I feel sorry for my neighbours, that's all I'm saying! Looking at other reviews on the web I had high hopes, but in person it shatters your hopes as you would never expect it to be that good!

AirPlay is also a welcome feature, I was slightly apprehensive due to other reviews saying it was 'fiddly' to set up, but for me, by following the included booklet, it was done in under 5 minutes and that is now my computer, iPhone and iPad all ready play with the Zeppelin!

Overall, a beyond 5 star package, would definitely recommend this over anything else in terms of value for money, audio quality and the overall package! Compared to the Zeppelin other docks lack a certain, excitement, something that I find a must if you wish to enjoy your music! Must buy.

Best small speaker system I've heard

    • Written by from DERBY

Doesn't quite have the sound of B&W's 800 series :), but still sounds incredible for something that weighs little over 6kg. It certainly surprises visitors when such an impressive (and balanced) sound is produced from a deceptively small system. And as for AirPlay, its fantastic; plays in perfect sync with an Apple TV and Airport Express to fill the whole house with sound; though I have now learnt where the Wi-Fi antenna on an iPad 3 is; if you cover it, the music stops, so i'd recommend controlling iTunes using Apple's Remote app.

The set up app was a breeze and the price is easily justified, even if, like me, you won't use the dock on the front.

    Awesome

Had and loved the 1st zeppelin but fancied the air play option. Happily bought the new Zeppelin Air after seeing that nothing else came close to it on the market for all around class! Absolutely simple to set up it really was child's play! Can't understand how people have slated it on setting up! Maybe they have old useless wifi! Ready in minutes for playing music via my iPhone and iPad. Faultless sound and easy of use! Very happy!!

    Excellent sound

Fabulous product , sounds very very good either via airplay or with an ipod or iphone docked.
Bit fiddly at first setting up airplay , used the dedicated Zeppelin airplay setup app on my ipad in the end and worked without a hitch.
For some reason using the quickstart guide provided and connecting the Zeppelin directly to my macbook via ethernet as directed , I couldn't get the Zeppelin to see my wireless network.

I bough one a year ago - it was so good I bough another one this year. Using Airplay from iPhone, iPad or Mac anywhere in the house to listed to music. Terrific bass too.

    Best buy ever

    • Written by from Penzance

We went out to test what was out there, the Zeppelin air was the best we tried in the store out of lots of top docking speakers. The sound is great even at full volume and even when playing Reggae. We are now going to get a second one to put in the other room for party's.

Why has it taken me so long to get one of these?!

    • Written by from Egham

I've lusted over the zeppelin for ages now. This really is one awesome speaker, the clarity is amazing. It brings new meaning to the phrase "room filling sound".

The build quality and finish are equally as impressive. Setup is simple, works the same way as if you were streaming through an apple tv.

Many have reported problems with loosing connection every 24hrs but this is due to the way their router works. There is a simple fix which involves assigning a static IP address to the zeppelin.

The zeppelin is most definitely not a portable iPod dock. However, on the plus side they have made a pretty good wall mounting bracket for it.

All in all, I am really happy with it. The £499 price tag is in my opinion more than justified by its looks and performance. If I had a bigger house I would happily shell out for additional units to setup a multi room system.

    Perfect

A stunning piece of kit. Bought for 499.99GBP. I had absolutly no problems with the set-up and have had no issues playing music through this device from an iphone or PC.

On the iphone you can stream almost anything; itunes, imusic, spotify, even a few games.

The sound is rich, deep and holistic. The bass is pretty intense and I had to knock it down a few levels - for my own personal taste.

Solid build, quality sound and only 499 quid; get one, you will not be sorry!

    B&W Zeppelin Air

    • Written by from NORTHALLERTON

Firstly, ordered from Apple UK on Tuesday and I received it Wednesday and that was standard postage!!!

The Air was a doodle to set up (less than 3 minutes) and, as expected, the sound is awesome and that's from someone who already has the original Zeppelin and a Bose SoundDock. The Air is beautifully built and I've discovered all my music all over again. Just make sure that your iTunes music volume is set to minimum otherwise you might get a shock when the Air kicks in. All our iOS devices and all 3 macs found the Zeppelin straightaway, even those devices in the house that have their own Apple accounts and separate email accounts. Easy peasy.

    Crashes constantly despite updates

    • Written by from London

I read up and reviewed all of the possibilities before buying this device. Everything I read said it was faultless so I was sucked in despite the price.

The set up is fine and it worked for around 24 hours. After three system re-sets, updates and reading as many forums as possible I still can't get a wireless song out of the Zeppellin Air without it losing connection. It does not then pick up the network once the connection once lost (something you'd expect with the price tag) so I am endlessly turning the device on and off again to the point that I've lost interest and let the thing gather dust. Don't be sucked in by the reviews, this thing sounds great on the dock by the Airplay is the selling point and it simply does not work. If you also read the reviews in details, it does not work with the I-phone 4s.

solutions to possible wireless / iTunes connection problems

    • Written by from guildford

I bought the Zeppelin Air for my other half as a prezzy, and then proceeded to spend quite some time enabling it at home on our iTunes account and then infuriatingly hours connecting it to our router (Virgin Super Hub)!!
I hope this short note saves someone the frustration.

Background: I was using a PC with Windows 7 and a Windows ie explorer.

Assuming of course that you have followed the Airplay set up instructions to the letter, I would suggest the following:
    1. Wireless connection problem:
To perform Step 5 - 10 of the setup, (the point when you are teaching the Zeppelin which wireless network and which password to use) Don’t use Windows ie!! This will really waste your time. You need a Firefox internet explorer. Quite simply you have a compatibility issue. You will find when using Windows ie, that once you have set the Zeppelin up, and disconnected the Ethernet cable, the purple light will just keep flashing at you and you will never connect to the router.
    2. iTunes compatibility issue:
Firstly do check that your iTunes version is up to date. Assuming that this is the case, I found that the solution lay with updating the ‘Firmware’ version on the Zeppelin to that of V1.3.1 (or more recent). I found the poorly written guide to this laborious experience on the B&W website.

On a final note. The speaker quality is great and I’m very happy to currently be sharing my tunes with the neighbours! So do persevere with the setup procedure. I just wish the IT team used in the development had been as qualified as the speakers team!

    Utterly Outstanding

    • Written by from HUDDERSFIELD

Bought the Zeppelin Air along with an iMac back in early January, it had been sat in its box since, till last week.

Fired it up with the ipod touch to start with and All Along the Watchtower, Mr Ferry's version from his album Dylanesque. Room filling, pin sharp sound out of such a small unit is astounding.

Followed the Air set up to the letter, done and dusted in under 5 minutes. Took it to the furthest point away from the Virgin router and streamed the same track. If there was any difference in the quality, my old ears couldn't detect it, all I got was the same blisteringly fantastic reproduction as I had from the ipod.

Was it worth the £500? Yes. Does it deliver what it says on the box? Yes. Am I pleased? Yes.

Unlike my old Nakamichi Soundspace system, or any other for that matter, this delivers and does so anywhere in the house with only the power cord to worry about.

In closing, I reripped my whole collection to Apple Lossless, a time consuming affair, but worth it.

It's your choice, I made mine and don't regret it.
