does the timecapsule have a builtin firewall
I want to hook my TimeCapsule directly to the comcast modem. Does the time capsule have a firewall to protect me or do I need to go buy one?

Best AnswerWhat the second poster said is true. The NAT "Firewall" is only useful in protecting computers behind it from attacks originating from the internet, but it does nothing to prevent your computer (or any computer on your network) from establishing an "out-going" connection. Put simply, a router with NAT enabled is taking part in an internet conversation that is all "one way". The router will "dial out", but will not accept any incoming communications from a source that it's not already established a connection with. If the router is set up properly to close vulnerable ports, it's effectively invisible to the internet.
With that in mind, however, any software (as well as any virus, malware, bot, or whatever) that is already behind the router and on your computer can "dial out" with impunity. That's where your OS's software firewall comes in. The software firewall will block both incoming AND outgoing communications that are not authorized.
But the question was "... do I need to buy one?" No, not typically, but it depends on how much security you think you might need. The Mac OS and Windows 7 firewalls work perfectly well to protect from 99% of any potential threats that most users will face, in my opinion. Now, if you happen to spend a lot of time in the more nefarious corners of the internet (i.e. - Torrent sites, etc...) then you're asking for trouble and might consider a more robust, third party firewall.

automatic backup
Does time capsule perform automatic backup?
- Asked by Mark W from San Mateo
- 11-Nov-2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best AnswerThe answer is: NO.
The Time Capsule is only a hardware that can be used for backing up your system.
If you have a compatible system like Mac OS 10.5.* or 10.6.* than you can use Time Machine feature to schedule automatic backups if you using a PC than you gonna need a third party backup application.- Answered by Szilard S from Destin

Is there a way to connect my time capsule to the hotspot created by my iphone 5 on the LTE network (I have no ethernet cable for DSL/WAN)
I have read that the airport express may be able to be used as the wireless bridge (connect to the iphone hotspot and then into the TC) but I can't find a definitive answer. If the AE can do it I would have thought the TC could but I can't find a way.
Internet is only provided by LTE through Iphone 5
I want to use my TC as a source for ethernet and extend/or create wifi
I need to get an ethernet connection for two home theater products that don't support wifi- Asked by Brad T from Saskatoon

I use a Retina Macbook Pro which obviously doesn't have an ethernet port. Can the TC work wirelessly without the need of the TC being hard wired?
I have a few quick questions regarding the Time Capsule.
I'm interested in getting the 2TB version to backup my rMBP, an iMac and 2 external usb hard drives.
I'm assuming that back up works wirelessly for each device, once setup using the Airport Utility? There is no need to hardwire each Mac to setup and continue to use Time Machine on the TC?
I won't need to buy a Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter for my rMBP in order to use the Time Capsule on this machine?
The TC doesn't (and can't) replace my main router?
Thanks!- Asked by Chris J

Best AnswerYes, Time Capsule can share its internal drive to Mac and Windows computers (in technical terms: it supports AFP and SMB/CIFS protocols) even when using it as backup device for your Mac(s) at the same time.
Note however that a Time Capsule's primary function is backup device for your Mac(s), backing up data from Time Capsule can be done but is not as effortless as backing up a Mac to a Time Capsule.

Best AnswerChris,
I have just recently left the ADF (Navy).
Time Capsule is a saviour, plug it in and load your movies/photos/music and you are pretty much set.
If you have your iPad/iPhone get an app like 'Airplayit', install the server on your laptop and then the client on your device and multiple people can access your server. Last year when I was on a course I had around 6 people watching movies from it at once and there was no lag...
If you do not feel the need to use your laptop at all, just download 'filebrowser' and your set, no need for a server via your laptop. Stream music/movies directly from the time capsule. (Preferred options)
You will only need a PC/MAC to set up your password(s) and initial share settings.
My mate also brought one and we joined the two together and extended the network on the ship, doubled the wifi area and allowed more people to use it.
You do not require an internet connection, it would just be handy when you aren't deployed
Overall, it works fine, it's easy to use and your mates will love to share.

Will Time Machine still backup if I leave the laptop lid closed and either plugged into a external hard drive or hooked to time capsule?

-Connected to Timecapsule via Wifi or Ethernet (doesnt need to be directly)
-Lid Open
-And connected to the external hard drive ONLY if you are backing up to THAT hard disk and not to timecapsule- Answered by Javier Enrique D from Dallas

Answer
NO,UNFORTUNATELY IT IS JUST A ROUTER,A VERY GOOD ONE I MUST SAY,WICH CAN BE USED TO EXTEND,OR BE ADDED TO YOU'R EXISTING NETWORK SETUP, EITHER WIRELESSLY OR BY ETHERNET CABLE , IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO BE USED AS A SERVER WHEN YOU ARE ON THE GO AND NEED FILES FROM IT, WITHOUT REQUIRING A COMPUTER TO BE ON, JUST BY USING YOUR APPLE ACCOUNT. I CANT WAIT FOR THE DAY APPLE ADDS A MODEM CHIP TO THIS THING AND MAKES THIS PRODUCT A COMPLETE SOLUTION SO WE DONT HAVE TO USE THE WORTHLESS ROUTERS OUR ISP'S SUPPLY US WITH AND REDUCE THE CLUTTER.
GOOD DAY SIR.- Answered by James W

Would it be advisable for any reason to use Time Capsule AND iCLoud?
- Asked by Diana P from Seal Harbor

Best AnswerYes. One reason being that iCloud keeps everything you CURRENTLY have, whereas time capsule will keep EVERYTHING you have EVER had. May not seem useful until you realize you accidentally deleted something and want to retrieve it. Also, can be useful if you need to restore or replace your computer. It's like a safe deposit box, it's a really good idea to have one.

Best AnswerNo, a Time Capsule has never had the ability to replace a modem. A DSL or cable modem should be connected to Time Capsule's single Ethernet WAN port if you wish to connect to the internet.

can you store all your photos on Time Machine and take them off your hard drive so you have more room?
- Asked by Susan K from Bellingham
- 30-Jan-2010

Best AnswerYes you can! My Hard Drive was getting full from all my digital media i.e. Pics, Music & Movies so I transferred them from my iMac to my TC & erased them from my iMac. If I ever want to view any of my pictures, listen to any of my stored music or watch any movies I just go to my finder & click on my TC & click on the appropriate files to access whatever media I want to? It's that easy! You just drag & pull your files from your hard drive to your TC, you can set up different folders & name them like pics, music, movies, etc. & store them however you want & access whenever you want!

How do you use the time capsule as an external wireless drive?
I am trying to store some files on my external hard drive and I am wondering how to do this. Do I drag the files into Time Machine backups when that shows up or do I put them in the shared drive?

Best AnswerYou put them in a shared drive, or folder.
You can create a folder on your time machine the same way you would create one on your desktop or elsewhere. You find the time machine in 'finder', click on it, click 'Command-Shift-N' to create a new folder. Name the folder the same way you would any other. Now you can drag whatever files you want into that folder and access them wirelessly.- Answered by Alexis G from Madison

Does time capsule backup multiple users on a same computer as a single profile?
- Asked by Phuong T from Irvine
- 11-May-2011

Best AnswerIf you choose to allow it to do so when you authorize Time Machine backups, Time Machine will back up everything on a Mac's internal hard drives as well as on USB external drives connected to the same Mac. Yes, this certainly includes all users. Of course you can choose to backup less than everything.
