Can this set of headphones allow for Mono instead of stereo listening? My husband does not have any hearing in his right ear.
He cannot correct his hearing problem with a hearing aid. If he listens to music or movies on an airplane that is played in stereo, he losses some of the audio that is played in the right ear. I'm hoping I can find a way he can have the notice canceling headset and also have the ability to hear in mono.

Answer
Yes the majority of devices can be set to play mono with these headphones. Usually under sound settings. iPhone for example lets you do this

Do these headphones block sound WITHOUT music on?
Looking for a good pair of headphones that will block out sound WITHOUT music or movies playing so I can study in a quiet environment (I cannot study with music or listening to people talking around me). Student on a budget so need the best "bang for my buck".

Answer
Yes they do. That is why they take a AAA battery so that you can switch them on and they emit a "white" noise that mostly blocks unwanted sounds out.

I seem to have the same problem: these headphones do not work with my iPad mini. In the compatibility list on this site, the iPad mini is not listed under compatible devices. I hope Apple can provide an answer.

Answer
Not in the sense of "Bluetooth". To just block out sound you don't have to have the cord attached. But if you want to listen to music, you must attach the cord first.
