No just wipe it clean with a damp cloth. The probe should NOT be submerged in water.

can the probe stand up to flare ups that occur on a grill, my last probe that looked liked this one died quickly when left unattended.

Answer
Yes it can stand up to flare ups, but it not recommended to place it on a direct flame. Typically you would sear the meat, flip it and then insert the probe and reduce the heat allowing the meat to cook.
