To use an e-sata external hard drive requires an e-sata port on the computer, which the iMac does not have. The fastest option you have for external storage is one with a Firewire 800 connection. They do sell adapters for e-sata to Firewire, but that defeats the whole purpose of the e-sata drive, as it slows it to Firewire speeds. However, firewire is more than fast enough for what most people use an external drive for. USB is considerably slower than Firewire 800, but is another option for connecting external storage and can often be found at lower cost.
