Will previous generation MBP MagSafe power adapters work with new MBP Retina Display?

    Technically yes, but you need the "MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter" which is like 10 dollars on/in the Apple Store.

  • The fact is that the old 85W MagSafe adapter and the new 85W MagSafe 2 adapter differ in their electrical specifications, not just the connector:

    Old 85W MagSafe adapter:
    Input: 100-240V, 1.5A, 50-60 Hz.
    Output: 16.5 - 18.5V, 4.6A

    New 85W MagSafe 2 adapter:
    Input:100-240V, 1.5A, 50-60 Hz.
    Output: 20V, 4.25A

    We all know now that there is an adapter available to make the connector of the old MagSafe adapter fit the new rMBP, but the real question is what effect the voltage difference will have. Will it work? WIll it charge more slowly? Does the rMBP have internal circuitry that fully compensates? It will take someone with real technical knowledge of the new rMBP to answer this one.

  • No, previous generation MBP MagSafe power adapters need the MagSafe 1 to MagSafe 2 adapter to charge the new MBP with Retina Display.

    You can use the old magsafe 1 power adapter on a retina macbook if you buy an " Apple MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter".

  • There's a converter from MagSafe to MagSafe2 available if you want to use the new MacBook Pro with a Cinema Display. I would say that it works the same if you just use a normal MagSafe.

  • Yep, you'll need the Adaptor though as the MagSafe 2 connectors are smaller.
    Search for MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter in the store.

  • There is a $9.99 adapter at the Apple Store that will convert an original 85W MagSafe to the 85W Magsafe 2 used for the 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

  • Sorry, but that is a negative. However, you can purchase the adapter for "Old" to "New" Magsafe for 10 bucks. The port itself had to be made smaller, since the whole thing is so thin. Its unfortunate, I just bought an adapter 2 weeks ago myself, hopefully I can get into the Apple store to replace it by tomorrow.
