Turn-On Button on the Display to start my Macbook that is closed?

Greetings,

I am considering purchasing a 24'' LED Cin. Display for my Macbook (unibody).

Now I am wondering if I can close the Macbook, put it in one corner of my desk and turn it on only using the 24'' Display? Is there an "On"-button on the display, or do I have to open up my Macbook and start it like I do now and then close it again to have only the new external display run?

Hope you can help me out here!

Regards,
Chris

    No, there isn't.

  • There is an Apple KnowledgeBase article (HT3131) that tells you how to use an external display with the Apple portable's lid closed (called "closed-clamshell" or "closed-display" mode):

If you go to support.apple.com and after that type /kb/HT3131 you'll find it. (I can't put the full link here, because that's not allowed.)

You'll of course have to use an external mouse and display.

I think we misunderstood each other. Obviously Ill also have a keyboard & mouse connected to it and I am aware that they will wake it from sleep. But I was wondering if I can boot the Macbook without opening the actual Macbook too, only using either a function of the Cinema Display, or mouse or keyboard.

If not and Ill have to leave it in sleep thats fine too, but I was just curious.

  • There's no button on the display which will do this, however, tap any key on the external keyboard/mouse you are using with the MacBook's lid closed, and it will wake from sleep and use only the LED display.

  • You could use a App to keep your machine from going asleep on a close lid. Like sleepless or InsomniaX, they still allows both displays to sleep, just keeps the machine on until you decide you want it sleep/off.

  • Although there's no button to turn your Macbook on, there is a way to set it up so that it automatically turns on at a specific time each day (say, 8:00 AM). To do this, you'll need to go to Energy Saver under Systems Preferences. Click on the Schedule button in the lower right corner and choose the time you want your Macbook to turn on.

  • Unfortunately, there are no buttons at all on the Apple 24" LED Cinema Display. The display turns on when the computer is connected and on. You will have to turn on the MacBook as usual or leave it in sleep mode so you can wake it using a mouse, keyboard, or Apple remote.

  • You need to be sure that your computer is compatible with the Cinema Display (i.e. that it has a Mini DisplayPort connector). Then you can either use the computer open or (with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard) with the computer closed, in which case pressing a key or clicking the mouse will waken the (still closed) computer.

  • Any mouse or keyboard will wake it up with the lid closed.
Answer me this though, what would you do with a computer with no input devices? You have to use a mouse/keyboard/remote to interact with the computer.
