You can't download Snow Leopard, and it's not free. But you do need it to upgrade from Leopard to (Mountain) Lion (assuming your computer can run the latter), and it's a good upgrade to Leopard even if you can't go further.

Apple doesn't make it easy to find Snow Leopard by browsing, and it's disappeared from the retail Apple Store that I visit. But it's "only" highly endangered; not yet extinct. If you go to the Apple Store site, and then search for "Snow Leopard", a page comes up offering the Snow Leopard DVD for $19.99 with free shipping.

To put that in context, Snow Leopard originally cost $29 (for Leopard owners), at a time when major upgrades to Mac OS X normally cost $129.

You may also be able to find Snow Leopard from other vendors who carry stocks of old software (such as some of the Marketplace dealers on Amazon).
