Western Digital 2TB My Book Studio II Hard Drive
Without fault, simple to use and reliable
Written by JH from HELSTON

I purchased this drive with the intention from the onset to run it as RAID 1, which provides the security of mirrored backup. This provides a peace of mind in knowing that if one of the 1TB drives should fail that I still have a copy, then you switch the failed drive and the system automatically replicates from the remaining drive. Bear in mind that Western Digital give a 5 year warranty.
Straight out of the box and using WD's HD configuration to change from RAID 0 to RAID 1 it was up and running without a hiccup with Time Machine, and has been ever since.
Yes, the first initial full system backup takes time, but then thats no surprise for any HD, running on Firewire 800. I've now got a WD Studio 500GB that holds all my music files and removes the burden from my MacBookPro. Perfect combination and soon to switch both to eSAT.
I notice some reviewers criticise the drive level gauge. Simple answer is to sit them behind your screen, and as for noise, I have none and they are in use in a music studio. …More110 of 111 people found this useful

Western Digital 2TB My Book Studio II Hard Drive
BEWARE: limited functionality of supplied WD software with Snow Leopard
Written by SC from Cheltenham
10-Nov-2009
I bought this external HDD to use as a mirrored 2x1TB RAID for belt and braces back up of various data sources supplementary to my Time Capsule.
The drive is fine BUT sadly the WD anywhere back up software is NOT fully compatible with Snow Leopard - it is not possible to configure your own individual back up options. The program hangs and WD helpline are unable to offer a solution at present.
This problem considerably compromises the usefulness of the device as, so far as I can tell, it will only work in default mode backing up your entire computer HD only and without options, using the default settings.
Hence only 2 stars until WD or Apple write a patch to fix this disappointing shortcoming when used with Snow Leopard. …More2 of 2 people found this useful

Western Digital 2TB My Book Studio II Hard Drive
Very satisfied

Got this drive 6 months ago and have no complaints! I keep a huge iPhoto library on it (among others) which opens up quickly through firewire 800. I set it to work in RAID 1 to keep my photos safe and it does exactly as expected. Luckily I haven't had to change a drive in it yet. Also very happy the noise level (if you can even call it that), it's standby mode and the gauge.
Can only recommend it!
PS: I haven't used / didn't need the supplied back-up software at all. …MoreWas this useful?
