    Ummm...

Civ IV is a good game...a very good game in fact and a massive improvement on Civ III.

It is hampered by massive deficiencies in its performance, which is simply not up to scratch (I'm running a 20" Intel with RAM and VRAM maxed out) - the game is buggy and you'd have to say that the port has not been a success.

If you can live with that for now, buy this game - it is very enjoyable. Otherwise wait until it's been patched and issues fixed properly. One patch so far....more must follow.

    Two steps behind...

As always the Mac release is two steps behind the Windows release and it must be compared to that as an alternative.
By now the game has been out for several years, so we all know what it's about - no need to dig further into that.
The game as such is really worth five stars, but considering the fact that it costs about 5 times as much as the Windows equivalent, my rating will be five times less.

And while we are still waiting for the third expansion pack to hit the shelves (with an obscure price tag), "Civilization IV Complete" is available for Windows at a LOWER price than this regular Civ IV is for Mac.

Somebody wake up and fix this!

One for the fans to come back to...

With each new release of Civilization, I find myself wondering whether they really can sustain the whole franchise, and make the new version so much better as to justify buying into it all over again.

Well, they certainly have this time; returning players will find the improved graphics and gameplay far improved over the previous version. Additional gameplay options (improvements to multiplayer both online and locally, map creation, playing styles and more) make it feel immersive and sophisticated; it's just that much more fun to play.

Playing the largest maps with all AI opponents caused no noticeable slow-down on a 2.16GHz 15.4" MacBook Pro with 1Gb RAM until the game was far advanced. I was really impressed with this, and expect that it can only be better on a desktop machine with similar or higher specs.

    Very Good

This is one of those games that you think is brilliant for the first month or two and whenever you get back from whatever you were doing during the day, you instantly go and play as soon as you get home. But then you find it loses its flair and is left on a shelf while you just go on the next best game or on the internet.

It is quite difficult to pick up but once you do it is a very enjoyable game. The graphics when zoomed out are good but lose their quality when you zoom in but you get over that. It is very well thought out and I think it's a good game.

Possibly too many new features to count. Runs a little slow on my iBook but perfectly on my Intel Mac. Just be patient people!
