Overview

Battlefield 1942 puts players at the heart of World War II combat, allowing them to choose from 16 famous battle sites, including Omaha Beach, Stalingrad and Wake Island, from the four main theaters of World War II including the Pacific, Eastern and Western Europe and Northern Africa.
With the ability to control more than 35 authentic Axis and Allied vehicles and select from five distinct character classes, players are faced with incredible choices in their plan of action.

The Road to Rome will focus exclusively on the key, yet largely underpublicized Italian and Sicilian campaigns of WWII. Battlefield 1942 and The Road to Rome also features incredible single player action. These levels feature unscripted, advanced AI allowing players a completely different experience each time they play.

Features:

  • A unique, robust multi-player component that supports up to 64 players on certain maps
  • Choose from fighter planes, dive-bombers, or heavy bombers and use your air superiority to gain a major advantage.
  • Wreak havoc with your naval firepower with battleships, destroyers, and landing craft.
  • With a range of armored vehicles, unleash the brute force of these armored beasts.
  • Sometimes a sidearm is all you need! Choose from sniper rifles, sub-machine guns, rocket launchers, and much more.
  • With Road to Rome included, you will get more maps, more vehicles, and more fighting forces.

Works on my macbook with 1gb memory without seperate graphics.
Really good game great fun though multiplayer is 10 times better, not sure if it would get boring without the internet.

I would definitely reccomend this game

I will say that this game is great, although it is definitely more of a multiplayer game than anything else, the campaign mode seems to be to hone your skills in readiness for multiplayer battles...
in answer to the previous review: the multiplayer capabilities of Battlefield are much better than that of Medal of Honor and Call of Duty, it does not limit players to working as a team, in fact, in BF1942 u are more likely to lose the battle if your side insists on teamwork. One good player can capture an opposing base by himself and thereby change the flow of the battle while everyone else working as a team may be held up IN THEIR OWN BASE by a tank or a decent pilot. Also, the opposing team loses tickets each time one of their players are killed, so you are not limited to just catching the flags, if you have a KDR of 20-1 then you are doing great, even if you never help capture a flag.
If you enjoy going on specialized missions to do a specific task then i suggest you play Call of Duty or Medal of Honor single player, if you want fast multiplayer battles then play BF1942

    Maybe overrated, but great fun!

Battlefield 1942 is not gory. If that's what you're after, get Soldier Of Fortune II, but it's fun. Each battle can last a very long time due to the "respawn" feature, some upto 30 minutes or more... The missions are varied between "capturing the flag" where two teams race to the same point, to assault and taking over a flag, to defence (the other way round).

You can interact with pretty much anything, fire mounted guns, climb ladders, change kits in-game (from fallen soldiers), drive boats etc..

Who doesn't like being able to jump into a Jeep and drive around, or fly an airplane, or control Coastal guns all in the same mission? The Mod Desert Combat is advised though, which updates everything to the 21st Century, although the only teams are "America" and "Iraq".

    An all round fun game

    gameplay!

Graphics, audio, gore, framerates and single player gaming may all be better in other games like Soldier Of Fortune 2, Call of Duty, Medal Of Honor, Doom3, Quake4 and others.

But BF1942's gameplay and the sheer number of expansions make this game just perfect. This is a game were you have almost unlimited freedom to explore the HUGE maps, plus the varied vehicles you can drive, pilot, ride and navigate. This game is freedom and it's vast also. The expansion mods only make it better - there are way too many to list here!

Don't forget single player is still bot supported when you begin a *coop* game in multiplayer mode (the best mode for a single player game!). Okay, bots never replace a human but there are times when people aren't online..

BF1942 has more "mods" and "total conversions" than almost any other game on the market, there are dozens ranging from half-completed mods that will never be finished (but are still playable!) too classics like Desert Combat(s), BattleGroup 42, Eve of Destruction, Silent Heroes, Forgotten Hope and many, many more.

There are even other types of total conversions like Interstate Racing that completely alter the game - this is a multiplayer racing game where you can perform stunts and tricks in your car while exploring the totally diverse range of maps. There are many types of cars and most of unique power-ups like sirens, trusters, turbo boosts, rockets and much more!

All in all, this "review" could go on for much longer! Please see a website like "AppleCrypt Mods", "MacGameMods" or "Macologist" for more details on the above and more! Google is your friend and I run AppleCrypt Mods (applecryptmods.co.uk) :-)
