The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adaptor features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.
When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light up; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC lead is provided with the adaptor for maximum lead length, while the AC wall adaptor (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.
Designed to be the perfect travelling companion, the adaptor has a clever design that allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.
This power adaptor recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.
Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Not compatible with older Macbook Pros
The MagSafe connector on this power adaptor does not fit older models of MacBook Pro. This newer connector is marginally smaller a nd does not fit snugly into the socket on the computer. I bought two of these at the Apple Store, Regent Street which didn't work, and I was eventually advised to buy the older part number MA938B for my January 2008 MBP. Check before you buy! …

They kinda fixed teh second most important problem...wow great job
While its fine and dandy that they changed one end of the cord, its the other end that is most likely to malfunction. I love my ma cs no doubt about it - but the magsafe adapters make me hate apple. The magsafe is such an expensive devise and at the same time the cord is so prone to braking off where it is connected to the charger. And then you cant just buy a new cord...you HAVE to buy a whole new charger...this is both very bad for the consumer and also for the environment. I really hope apple will soon realise that this way of milking costumers is not viable in the 21th century.
So I beg you Apple: please fix the real problem and make a magsafe with a detachable cord. …- Written by Hakim Jonas G from København N

Mine sparked up and melted the cord!
I am so surprised to see so many people who have had the same issue with this cord.
Apple did replace the cord as it was still under the 1 year warranty. They also escalated the issue to engineering, and I am expecting a call from them to verify the issue.
This is dangerous! Mine was getting really hot for weeks and then produced a large spark which almost separated the cord completely from the base. The cabling was exposed, the plastic coating was burned. Obviously at this point the cord was useless.
I can't believe that Apple would sell such a poorly designed product. …- Written by Laura R from Markham

Does anyone know if all of the three available Magsafe adapters - 85W, 60W and 45W - are the same physical size?
- Asked by Philip D from Vancouver
- 13-Feb-2013
Answer
All three are different sizes, and obviously the higher the wattage, the larger the adapter. I freq uently swap between all three (I own 3 laptops - 11", 13" 15"). Using a 45W on the 15" results in a slower charge, but it still charges. With the higher wattage chargers, they can be used on a lower need laptop with no issue at all. The laptop just draws what it needs. …
