Connect your DSL or cable modem to the AirPort Extreme Base Station, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is included for both Mac OS X and Windows. Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.
For maximum range and compatibility, AirPort Extreme works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. Guest networking.
Set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers and attached hard drives.
Print without wires.
Have several computers in your home or office but only one printer? No problem. Just connect a compatible printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme Base Station, and the printer instantly becomes available to all the computers (Mac and PC) on your wireless or wired network. Share your hard drive.
You can share an external USB hard drive over your wireless and wired networks by simply connecting it to the USB port on your AirPort Extreme Base Station. Called AirPort Disk, this feature is perfect for sharing files and more. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.4

Have had a number of wireless base stations and none had enough range for my house apart from my BT HomeHub which was streets ahead of the rest. I was worried therefore that the AEBS would be like the other routers, however in practice I've found it is at least as good as the HomeHub in terms of wireless and is certainly way ahead of anything else.
A USB drive attached to this works perfectly with Time Machine, configuration is dead easy with the AirPort utility and it even sends logs to my Linux box with no problem at all. My iPhone and two Macs connect to it very quickly and it wakes up my Macs automatically to access other services when required.
Disk performance is also very reasonable - it managed to do a 64Gb initial Time Machine backup in a little over 2 hours so I can't really complain!
It uses just 7w, which whilst slightly more than the HomeHub at 4w, is still pretty good when you consider that it's got two radios.
My advice is to buy it - yes it's relatively expensive, but you do get what you pay for..... …More125 of 128 people found this useful

I bought the Airport with the new iMac 27" I7 core processor, i also have an Macbook pro, i was using a Belkin N Wifi router with my cable internet connection, but this did not work too well with my iPhone, and it kept losing the connection.
Once everything was plugged in as per the instructions says, it took about 2 min, to configure itself and find the cable internet modem,.
One peace of advice i would give is to install the supplied software first for the Airport, i did not do this, because i thought that Snow Leopard would already have the latest software already. i was wrong. Setting up the Airport was fine, but it would not find my Virgin cable modem. as soon as i installed the software it took about 2 minutes and i was up and running, just follow the set up wizard for Airport Extreme and you will be up and running in minutes.
i am so pleased with the Airport, it works very well, its very stylish and with only one light it so much better than what i had before. This one light will tell you if you have a problem. The Belkin had about 7 lights.

5 Stars for what it does but 0 Stars for what it can't and should do!
I hope Apple post this because I feel it is important ... I got quite excited because of the Airport Base Station and Airport Express. I thought Apple could provide me with a main wireless router and then I can boost the range by plugging in an Airport Express. That's the idea but then I realised when zooming in on the photo that there is no DSL line in. What that means is you can't use this as your main router; you need to keep your existing router and plug in the Base Station. Also the Airport Express only works with the Base Station, so if you were thinking of getting one of those to use on your existing wireless router don't.
The result is you will need to have two routers by the phone line - which looks messy. I expect somebody will comment that if you have a wired router you can use a Base Station because it means you can become wireless - I asked the first 10 people in my office what type of router they had and they all said wireless - which means they don't need this product.
So a note to Apple R&D Department why not change the design ever so slightly and add a dsl line. Do that and you open up to a new customer looking for this type of product. For those who can't wait try Netgear because they do this already ... shame :(

This is an absolutely brilliant airport! Despite the fact, are line is really slow because of where we live, and even though we have broadband with are old router (A Netgear G Router) We were averaging on 15kb/s (Very Slow) and 20kb/s when we were lucky, however now with the Apple Airport Extreme 802.11n Base Station we are averaging at 60kb/s (what was predicted by BT, our isp) and sometimes when were lucky ranging up to 100kb/s! Still very slow, however look at the difference! Also this airport also haves lots of more advanced features which are very useful, the only disapointment is that it doesn't have web- based management, however Airport Utility is okay, the port- mapping is also very useful as well! Thank you so much Apple for yet not failing to bring out another fantastic product! …More

I replaced an old and unreliable Netgear with this.
It works well, is reliable and has an excellent range. Very rarely drops out. This is exspensive but is worth the cash for the Peace of Mind.

I bought this with the intention of replacing a Netgear that was only reaching half way down the kitchen. I also bought an airport express to then attach to my stereo to stream music to it in another room.
The Extreme had worse coverage than our old netgear! And reached less distance. I called apple and after over 2 hours on the phone trying different things, the apple representative told me that we'd have to use the express to extend the network.
So I now have to buy another express to link to the hi fi, an expense I am not that chuffed about. …More15 of 25 people found this useful

Actually you are spot on. That is the whole purpose really of AirPort. As you say, plug in your ethernet cable and the AirPort Extreme Base Station, set it up and it becomes your wireless access point for your home, office or wherever you will be using it. It will allow any computer, Mac or PC to wirelessly connect to the internet provided, of course that you have an ISP (Internet Service Provider) and it also has dual Band Wi-Fi so any Wi-Fi device will also use it to connect like an iPod Touch or iPhone.
You can also plug a USB printer into it so that any computer on your network can print wirelessly as well. You can even plug in a USB hard Drive into the base station for use as a network drive which can also be accessed over the web if you are away. If you own a PS3 or XBOX the base station will also allow you to connect those devices wirelessly to your network. …More- Answered by CB from Schenectady

Technically no, but for certain customers, their environments may make it seem so. Wireless interference is one of the main causes for certain customers having a bad experience with the Airport products. Take note of how many other wireless networks are around and what devices are in the same area that utilize similar wireless technology. The Airport devices use same wireless technology and consist of the same hardware. With the Airport Extreme, you get the Dual-band feature and the extra ethernet ports.
