can remote desktop 3 work from another location

You don't have to be on the same network to control other computers using ARD.
As long as you know the IP address of the computer you need to control you can manage it remotely. You only need a VPN connection if the remote computers are behind a firewall that hasn't enabled the ARD ports.
I manage 30 Xserves, 20 Macs and 60 PCs (running VNC) spread across multiple subnets over hundreds of kms without problems.

You have a solution already w/o purchasing new software. Screen Sharing is basically a stripped down ARD. To use it, have your father turn it on in his Sharing System preference then give you the IP info. If he is using a wireless router, it needs to be set up to allow port forwarding on port 22 to his IP, and to access his machine you would use his router's IP. The Screen Sharing program is located in 'System/Library/CoreServices/Screen Sharing'. Open it and then in the 'Connection' menu, click 'new' and enter the IP data. You'll need his username/pw to log in.
To make his machine easier to find, you could also use 'back to my mac' and either log in using his MobileMe username, or have him log in using yours. This would let you see the machine in Finder.
I use this set up to 'admin' several of my family members' machines world-wide, and it has saved me the $300 cost of new software …More- Answered by AT from Odenton
