Overview

The 85 Watt Apple PortableMagSafe Power Adapter features the MagSafe Connector — a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

    Not good enough

Like many other people, I am sick of these power adaptors. I'm on my 2nd one in 18 months and it is already not working correctly. I think the problem is inside where it seems to have some sort of auto protection switch. It just doesn't work well enough. My laptop won't charge half the time and says it is charging when it isn't for the rest!

The design is really good and I love the magnet connection but I'd give it zero out of five if I could.

    Apple - SORT IT OUT.

    Nice design, lousy product

This is definitely the weakest link of the MacBook product family. The adapter has a cable that wears out fast and breaks, the power circuitry breaks typically once or twice before the 3-year warranty period is over, and the nice changeable power plug becomes loose fast.

In addition, when you want to get a new one, it tends to take much more time to get a replacement part than it should. This is very disappointing with otherwise good product line.

Well my macbook pro is a year old and im only my way to buying my third power adapter, these things just simply aren't made to packed & unpacked alot.
The mag connector is nice touch but the actual cable connecting it to the powerblock seems to come away easily leaving exposed cabling (at least in both my cases)

Please give us a better design

Rarely does a power supply fail.

No, it is the low voltage power cable that fails 99.9% of the time.

Why? The cable is a dual-core insulated wire. Eventually the outer core will fracture inside the rubberised insulation. This is why you can often make the power cable work by moving the wire about. It is a common fault on ALL power adapters.

SOLUTION: Apple please give us a power supply that has a low voltage cable made out of a PAIRED cable. The paired cable needs to have a substantial outer core, ideally one that is "armoured", i.e. has a flexible metal shield. WE DONT CARE THAT IT WILL NOT WRAP UP SMALL! Indeed if it has to be small, then make it shorter! We can always use a longer high voltage cable.

ALTERNATE SOLUTION: Keep the current low core voltage cable, but fit it with a MagSafe connector at both ends! That way it is twice as safe and it can be replaced when the outer core fails.

We consumers will pay more for something that we know will last as long as the MacBook! Honestly we will!

Connector pins corrode - give me a 'regular' connector any day

I can't believe I'm having to buy my 4th one of these units. At first I was impressed with the design of the MagSafe adaptor. However, I've found that eventually the pins in the connector corrode and slip into the housing. To get it to connect properly I have to repeatedly shake the connector to get the pins back out. It sometimes take 5 minutes just to get it to start charging properly. This has happened with three separate units now! It's not as if I treat it rough - in fact, it rarely leaves the house. Combined with very short battery life, this is very disappointing and infuriating. More
