    Lightening camera adapter

    This doesn't work with my nikon D3100 and I gave £30 for it. To ipad mini that is.

    Lightning to USB Camera Adapter is perfect for my needs. It does what it says and that is conenct a digital camera (Canon 60D) and transfer photos (I only shoot RAW) and videos to my Ipad mini. Fast Photos/videos transfer and they are not altered in any way. Be careful though as it requires precise power requirement from the device. If your device USB requires a lot of power then the Ipad mini will not be able to provide that power which is understandable. Mostly devices that requires charging via USB connection, those may fail as they consume too much power. Digital SLR like my Canon 60D does nto recharge from USB connection. 4 stars cause it is a bit expensive.

    I was worried about the previous reviews, but I am totally satisfied with this product. it works with my Canon EOS DSLR and also with my old Olympus Camedia. I think people may be having problems with their camera's not being fully charged up when they try to transfer.

    Very pleased with this adapter.

    I was initially worried after reading other reviews that it would not work with my Lumix DMC-FS15 and Lumix TZ10 camera's. It works perfectly, you can preview pics and choose which ones you want to load onto iPad. Very pleased with purchase. Just wish iPad could be connected to Garmin Dakota 20 GPS. Please Apple.

    it says connects your digital camera to ipad for transfering photos!! it doesn't. when i connect my new Nikom camera the ipad displays this..."device uses to much power" so i cant use it, it is absolute rubbish.

    The ipad can't power photo transfer from this camera. I wish apple would highlight this issue before expensive adapters are purchased and then returned!

    Adapter doesn't not work

    I have paid a lot of money for an adaptor to connect between my camera and my iPad only for my pad to reject it because it takes too much power. It is not fit for purpose and is going straight back to Apple with a request for a full reimbursement! I rated it one star because otherwise I could not make the post. In fact, it does not warrant any stars. What a wast of time

    OK: It does let you import photos but that is all + No Preview on the card

    This is a typical Apple product. On the plus side it is simple, small, elegant & does what it says it will do. The cable is a bit too long if you want to store in a point a shoot camera case.

    On the downside it only does what it says it can do (i.e. import photos from a SIM) & it does that badly, plus it is expensive for what it is. The main obvious thing it is missing is that you can not preview the pictures full screen while they are on the SD card. Most people will want to delete out the rubbish before you copy them onto you iPad, but Apple treats you like a little kid & does not allow you to do this. How can people so clever do simple things like this so stupidly?

    I can understand them locking down & restricting what data you they will allow you to import onto your IOS device i.e. you can not browse folders, load other non-picture/video files but this is typical of their obsessive control for no good reason, which is why so many people hate them. Got to be said.

    It will have it's place as a way of previewing pictures but the clumsy implementation means you have to load them all in & then delete them on the iPad, which is tedious given the poor controls in picture viewer. Shame, as they could have done this so much better.

    Doesn't work with go pro 3

    The adapter worked for the first week before the message 'accessory unavailable: the attached accessory uses too much power' appeared each time I plugged the camera in. Tried charging both devices, but no luck. Swapped for the SD card reader, working well so far...

    Does not appear do what it says in the literature

    Despite the description of the accessory identifying different formats of video. After trying different format settings available on my camera including 1080p, the only video format it recognised on my camera and enabled me to import to my new IPad was IFrame. Either I do not understand simple instructions or the product does not deliver what it is advertised to do. I purchased this item with a view to connecting my cameras while on holiday and carrying out some basic editing on the Pinnacle Studio 16 app that is available, but do not see the point if it is so restricted. This is a disappointment of an Apple product, when they are usually so good. Any assistance I asked for from the Apple Support site was vague to say the least. Hopefully someone from Apple will address this in the future.

    Works like a dream

    This short cable does just what the web site and its box says it will: transfer images from your camera to your iPad. No setup is required and transfer was fast ( using a Lightening connector) even with RAW files from my Canon 7D. Also works with the iPhone.
    Yes, it would have been nice to have a mini USB on the end of a somewhat longer cable but all cameras should come with the USB lead. And, Yes, it is expensive.

    I bought this to connect my Gopro camera to my Ipad so that I could transfer and edit video whilst on holiday. When it's all connected the ipad comes up with the warning of 'the device uses too much power'

    The connector is going back as in my opinion it does not do the job it was made for.

    This adaptor did not work for me. I tried connecting two compact flash readers and an SD card reader to this USB adaptor. None worked. Be careful. Apple do not tell you that a power supply is needed for the connector to work. So this connector has to be connected to a camera which supplies the power from the camera's battery. I found out the hard way.

    Slick operation with some cameras

    Using this cable to connect an iPad 4 to a camera you will also need the USB cable that connects your camera to your PC's USB A socket. It would have been nice if this cable was longer and ended in a USB mini B plug so that it could have connected to most cameras directly.

    I connected a 64GB iPad 4 to a Canon 5D mk3 and it worked straight away downloading the RAW files (approx 25MB each) quickly to the import album in the photos app. The app then offered to delete or leave the photos in the camera.

    The app allowed viewing and zooming of the RAW files which look really great on the retina screen.

    Once home I connected the iPad to my Windows 7 PC and it then showed up as a device in My Computer. Opening the My iPad icon I browsed the photos folders then dragged and dropped the RAW files onto my computer hard disk. They came over unaltered or compressed by their passage through the iPad. Also I did not have to use iTunes to transfer the photos!!!

    So far so good but it failed to recognise my GoPro HD video camera.

    As others have said this cable does not add a USB socket to an iPad for general file transfer. If it works with your camera...great. If not this is probably one of the most expensive cables with limited functionality it is possible to buy. For £1 less I have just bought a 15m HDMI cable for an HD TV which is highly functional, transmitting both HD video and audio!

    Adds a lot of functionality

    I've connected the lightning to usb camera adapter to a kensington usb powered hub so I could connect a midi keyboard via an EMU USB to midi adapter and a USB audio interface. Both worked simultaneously just like they do on my iMac. I've also connected directly to my Canon Powershot Camera and transferred photos no problem. However connecting a USB drive is very limited, you can format as FAT and put a DCIM folder containing pictures and movies, essentially you trick iOS into thinking its a Camera file system.

    The downside is it is expensive and there is no second lightning port to charge via Apple's power adapter. The best one can hope for is that a powered USB hub might trickle charge or reduce battery consumption.

    Useful, if limited

    A useful, if limited little cable; on my iPad Mini have only been able to make it work with cameras - no other USB devices. Anything powered by the USB port prompts a 'The connected USB device requires too much power' message; anything self powered (tried with multiple thumb drives, self powered USB HDDs etc) triggers no reaction at all. Other USB devices tried (mouse, keyboard!) prompt a 'The connected USB device is not supported'.
    The good news is that it works fast and flawlessly with cameras - tested with Canon 50D and IXUS 100IS - brings up a separate 'Camera' group in photo album and allows the import of selected or all photos on the camera - RAW, JPEG and MOV formats and then post transfer asks if you 'want to delete the imported files from the attached camera'. Does not allow file export from iPad back to camera, and does not make available anything that the camera does not recognise as a file (ie MP4 files not shown - so can't import movies that way).
    So, does what it says on the tin - connects your Camera to your iPad and will be useful to allow download and/or big screen viewing of photos when in the field - but currently that's it.
