It depends on what you mean by plug+play. It's formatted to work with the Mac right from the get go, and even if it wasn't Time Machine would still recognize it and format it to be compatible as soon as you plug it in. (Time Machine will do this with any external hard drive.)
There's nothing really to "play" so to speak, but if what you're asking is more along the lines of "Will my computer know to backup to this when I plug it in," then yes, Time Machine will automatically prompt you and ask what you'd like to do with the external hard drive as soon as you plug it in.
There may be manufacturer included software on the drive that will backup as well, but I would suggest sticking with Time Machine, it's your easiest bet and requires the least amount of setup.
