How do I get ready for my iPhone?

Check out these handy tips that will help you prepare for your new iPhone:

Who can have an iPhone?

Anyone with a broadband connection, access to a Mac or PC with a USB 2.0 port and the latest version of iTunes. Download iTunes for your Mac or PC here

Before you activate your iPhone

1. Check your voicemail - activation may delete your existing voicemails. If you are transferring an existing number from another network operator, existing voicemails will not be transferred.

2. Transfer your contacts, music and photos - Migrate your existing mobile contacts into Outlook or Outlook Express on the PC, or Address Book or Entourage on your Mac – your mobile manufacturer’s handbook or website should tell you how to do this. When you activate your iPhone, your contacts, music, photos and more can be synchronised between your phone and your computer. Find out more here

3. Install the latest version of iTunes - For the installation process you need the latest version of iTunes. You can download iTunes for free. You also need to create an iTunes Store account if you don’t already have one. While this account is free, a credit card is required for setup. Your card is not charged by Apple until you make a purchase from the iTunes Store.

Don’t forget: make sure your computer is connected to the Internet when activating your iPhone, either through a WiFi network or by direct connection to your Internet router or Ethernet network. If it’s not connected, you will not be able to activate successfully.

Will my iPhone work with my PC and Microsoft Windows?

This is available upon activation of your iPhone. Wi-Fi and 3G enable you to use fast web browsing, email and GPS facilities. Find out more here

Free 3G data for 12 months is limited to 250MB per month and applies to use in the UK only. Unlimited Wi-Fi applies to use in the UK only and is subject to excessive usage policy.

For data usage over 250MB you will be charged £2 per day for up to 25.5MB and £4 per MB for usage over 25.5MB.

Additional Data Extras are available from Orange at £1 for one day of unlimited browsing or £5 for one week of unlimited browsing.

£10 Orange Pay as you go credit

Your iPhone with Orange Pay as you go comes with £10 worth of credit. This credit will automatically be added to your iPhone when you activate your SIM. (See “How do I activate my iPhone with Orange Pay as you go?”)

Can I use my iPhone with Orange Pay as you go internationally?

iPhone is a quad-band GSM phone and will work around the world. Before you travel, make sure that international calling and roaming are enabled, by contacting Orange. Also, ensure that the places you’re visiting offer GSM coverage.

Don’t forget: use of 3G data facilities outside the UK incurs an additional charge. To find out how much it will cost to use your phone abroad, text the word FROM, with the name of your destination country to 452. For example, text "FROM FRANCE" and Orange will text you back with the call rates.

Can I surf the web with iPhone without a Wi-Fi connection?

Yes. When a Wi-Fi connection is not available, you can access the Internet using the Orange 3G network. When this is not available, you will be able to use the Orange Edge/GPRS data network (please note that this will provide data at reduced speeds).

Can I view normal websites on my iPhone or only mobile WAP websites?

With the Safari web browser that’s built into iPhone, you can surf websites just as you would do on your personal computer. You are not limited to mobile WAP sites.

Don’t forget: the landscape view of a website on iPhone allows you to see more of the page without scrolling – simply turn your iPhone on its side. iPhone will sync with the web browser bookmarks that you keep on your Mac or PC.

Can I set parental controls for Internet usage on my iPhone?

Yes. Parents can call the automated service on 61818 from their iPhone and follow the prompts to restrict use of the iPhone. Once this facility is activated, only safe, white-list Internet sites may be visited.

How do I top up my iPhone with Orange Pay as
you go?

Your iPhone with Orange Pay as you go comes with £10 worth of credit. This credit will automatically be added to your iPhone when you activate your SIM. (See “How do I activate my iPhone with Orange Pay as you go?”)

When you need to top up your iPhone again, there are several ways to do it:

Can I keep my number?

Yes you can. You need a code from your current network called a PAC. Request a PAC from your current network. A PAC allows Orange to acquire your telephone number and apply it to their service.

How long will it take to transfer my existing number?

It can take up to 48 hours for your number to be transferred. However, you’ll still be able to use your iPhone during that period because you’ll be given a temporary number while you wait for your number to transfer.

Don’t forget: make sure you have transferred all your contacts from your old SIM card as it will be deactivated once your new number goes live.

Can I "unlock" the iPhone and use it with another network?

Unlocking your new iPhone will invalidate its warranty and will disable all software updates.

Additional Information

Read on for some additional information related to iPhone, including accessory compatibility, gifting, recycling, checking order status, and returns and refunds.

Accessory Compatibility

iPhone uses the same 30-pin dock connector as iPod, so many properly designed accessories can be used with both iPhone and iPod. While there are thousands of accessories that have been designed specifically for iPod, these are not all fully compatible with iPhone yet. This is because mobile phones can cause audio interference with some accessories. Apple has created special iPhone compatibility requirements for accessory manufacturers. Products that are engineered and certified to be compatible with iPhone will carry a "Works with iPhone" logo on their package.

It is possible, however, to use many existing iPod accessories that have not yet been certified to work with iPhone. When you connect iPhone to one of these accessories, iPhone will notify you that the accessory was not made to work with iPhone. You will be presented with an option to go into Airplane Mode, which will turn off the communication ability of iPhone while it is connected to that accessory. This means that you will avoid any potential audio interference, but you will not be able to make or receive calls. If you choose not to enter Airplane Mode, you will still be able to make and receive calls, but you may experience some audio interference.

Recycling

Apple has long been an advocate of product stewardship, and we believe that this concept extends to the proper disposal of used electronic equipment. Apple’s recycling programme will take back your iPod or any mobile phone — free of charge — regardless of the manufacturer or model. Find out more about the Apple Recycling Program
