Does the Airport Extreme have any QoS features?

Best Answer
No, and IMO, that is a very serious shortfall of this product, to the point that I can't recommend it to anyone. In today's households with multiple computers and internet connected appliances (BD-Live, Netflix, AppleTV, etc) QoS has become a requirement for any home router.
I have a VOIP phone, and if my AppleTV is downloading a movie, or if there is a computer in the house downloading files, then the VOIP phone is all but unusable with the AEBS as the router. I now use another router with QoS, and then use the AEBS in bridged mode to simply provide the wireless.- Answered by Michael A from Stittsville

will a time capsule be necessary once the cloud is fully active
Trying to decide if I should purchase a new time capsule for our second home where I use one dedicated computer and a few laptops or will the time capsule become useless once we have the cloud. If that is the case then it seems that airport extreme would be better choice as I now have airport express.

What is the best way to connect an Airport Extreme to a networking Switch?
Hello -
We live in a house that has fiber optic wired into a switch that powers a variety of Ethernet outlets throughout the house. The switch is a dumb switch. It is does not assign IP addresses.
I am trying to connect my Airport Extreme and a second Airport Extreme (as an extender) in the best way. Right now I have the Airport Extreme in normal operating mode with an ethernet line plugged directly into it from the inbound lines. I run into IP issues from time to time, particularly with my VPN with this setup.
Suggestions?- Asked by Daniel M from Issaquah

How to extend the range of Airport extreme
We are in a one floor office environment. At the two far ends of the office the WiFi signal is marginal. How can I extend the range of our Time Capsule - 2TB so that everyone can back into it and have reliable internet access? Is there some repeaters station set-up available?)

Adding either an Airport Extreme or an Airport Express (or more than one or a combination of either/both) can be used to extend the wireless network and allow their own wireless clients, your Time Capsule would still act as router and still assign DCHP addresses, etc., as/if required.

Can a Powerline Adaptor be used to extend a network with Airport Extreme/Time Capsule?
My house is very large and the rooms do not adjoin (to get from one room to another there is outside wall/open air/outside wall). As such it is very hard to get a wifi signal throughout.
I have tried a succession of Airport Extreme/Express etc. but to no avail. I finally found a location in the house where the Base station will reach all but one room on a floor. So have placed a Time Capsule at one end of the house that reaches all but one room upstairs and an Airport Extreme at the other end that reaches all but one room. Each Base unit covers the room above/below that the other is missing. However they cannot see each other so I cannot share my iTunes around the house. I tried an Airport Express in between but it was ridiculously slow.
So I am thinking of using a Powerline Adapter as follows
Internet/iTunes(iMac) -> Time Capsule -> Powerline Adapter (upstairs)
then Powerline Adapter -> Airport Extreme (downstairs) to extend the network
Would this work?- Asked by Ruth M from Wadhurst

I was able to use two Netgear Powerline adapters with my wireless network. I have an Airport Extreme base station with the first Powerline adapter hooked up to it. I then set up an Aiport Express upstairs connected to the second Powerline adapter. At first it wouldn't work so I did some research. I found out by using Airport utility 5.6 (not 6.0) I changed the Airport Express to a wireless access point. Make sure you use the same network setting as on your Base station router and you should be fine. Mine works perfect. I have an old Windows Vista PC hard wired to the Airport Express and it gets 40 megabits download and 19 megabits upload.

I know from current personal experience that both your MacBooks can/will connect to a wireless network that is using WEP encryption.
Or, you can upgrade your version of OS X so that your eMac can use WPA encryption.- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

the BT infinity homehub3 is driving me crazy - it loses the connection all the time.

How fast is the airport extreme in terms of mbps?
- Asked by David C from Myersville
- 17-Nov-2009
- Flag as inappropriate
Best Answer
These are what my tests have shown.
Ethernet = 1 Gbps
Wireless G, Wireless N (2.4 GHz) = 130 Mbps
Wireless N (5 GHz) = 300 Mbps
However, it really depends on the bandwidth coming into the router that makes these speeds attainable... The data rate you receive from your ISP affects the real speeds you can utilize. Here is a great website to test your speed from various servers depending on your area: www.speakeasy.net ... and look for speed test.- Answered by Christopher M from Burlington

Is the "AirPort Extreme Base Station" a Modem+Router? Plus Would it work in Ireland with DSL connection?

Best Answer
No, the Airport Extreme Base Station is not a Modem+Router, it is only a router, you will still need a modem. If you use it along with a modem, it will work with a DSL connection, although I am not sure if it will work in Ireland, because I think the UK has a different WiFi standard.

do you have to pay a monthly fee to use this and about wifi
do you have to pay a monthly fee of just buy the base? Also, i have a ps3 and my wifi now is really slow and i get bad connection will this extreme base thing increase the speed and connection and is the ps3 even compatible with this and does this base station give out its own wifi or do i need something else with is?
- Asked by Deanne A from Olathe

Best Answer
No monthly fee, just buy the base station. It will provide you with a Wi-Fi network to which your PS3 can connect. If your connection has always been bad, it's hard to know what the problem is and whether or not you will see improvement. But if it was once good, and has become bad, then yes, you'll get a better connection.

How do I tell which wifi band I am using? Running Leopard on a Mac Book Pro.

In the US, the 2.4GHz band uses channels 1 to 11, while 5GHz uses channels 36 and higher. If in AirPort Utility you are using the default "Automatic" settings for "Radio Mode" and "Radio Channel Selection," quickly see which channel AirPort Utility has you using by pressing the "Option" (alt) key simultaneous with clicking on the AirPort beam icon in the top menu bar.
Those two settings for the Extreme can be changed at AirPort Utility> Manual Setup> AirPort> Wireless. You force separate your main network's bands in "Wireless Network Options..." by checking the box "5 GHz Network Name" - then Done. Next press your "Option" key while opening "Radio Mode" and select one of the four "802.11n only (5 GHz)" settings - then Update. Some moments later you should see in your AirPort icon that you have your originally named network (only now it's using channels 1-11) as well as a separate "(5 GHz)" network only using channel 36 or higher. Now easily switch between 2.4GHz and 5GHz by using your AirPort icon.
(If you also setup a "Guest Network" you'd have a third wireless network.)- Answered by Andrew H from Carmel

I have an AirPort Extreme that keeps locking up and requires a hard reboot 5 to 10 times per day.
I called apple and they thought maybe it was interference causing the problem but if that was the case why would it be totally unresponsive its like it isn't even there. The wireless network is just gone! The light stays green and everything works normally once i pull the plug and wait for it to start back up.
They said I could send it in and wait a couple weeks to have them take a look at it but that is totally impractical i work from home a lot and cant have even one day of down time.
Are there any options for me to run some diagnostics myself?
I do notice that the problem happens more frequently when a particular computer is on the network it is a windows 7 machine using a rosewill usp wireless device.- Asked by Joel M from Poplar Bluff
